Does anyone have any suggestions for something out of the ordinary to experience at the parks? We have visited the last 3 years in a row with kids, now 7,10,13, and a hubby who is getting tired of going on the same rides. We are going to the Pirate, Princess Party, but was wondering how you get chosen to be the 'family of the day' at the parks.
Also, which is the best generic character meal? We went to the Pooh breakfast years ago and wasn't very impressed. Thanks...
As for somewhere to eat.....
It depends on our family. I would read as many reviews as I can get my hands on (here, and at allearsnet.com)...some option to condsider is Ohana, maybe the Hoopty-Dee-Doo Revue (we love it), Coral Reef. You could even go and have dessert at the Sci-Fi diner (MGM). As for resort dining, and I have not been here yet (going 8/17) eat at Whispering Canyon (Wilderness Lodge).
As for "non-eating stuff". I would try some tours. We are doing the dophin encounter and looking in to horseback riding and renting a sea racer. Mini-golf is fun and of course disney courses are special in their own way. I am looking into going to Fort Wilderness for there movie night. You watch a movie outside with a camp fire. You can even make smores.

One of the pirate cruises might be fun - but your 13 year old might be too old, I think the ages are 4-10 - but if you're going in August, they might be sold out already.

We loved the Family Magic Tour (but my kids were a little younger at the time-- 7 and 4). Are they boys or girls? My daughter's favorite character meal is the Princess Storybook one (although the adults hated the food at dinner) and my son prefers Chef Mickey's. Over all I prefer a character breakfast to a dinner but YMMV of course.
I don't think that the character meals are necessarily about the food but more about the experience.

Someone mentioned Sci Fi for dessert but I'd suggest this for lunch. Maybe one around 2:00 or so. You would get the full 45 minutes of the film clips. No characters but I think the clips are better than characters anyway. Plus, MGM doesn't have that many fantastic counter service places (in my opinion, they have no counter service places worth my time but that's me).
The pirate cruises would only be good for the two youngest (maximum age is 10). This isn't that big in my family but there are fishing excursions (catch and release). Also, check out the activities at Fort Wilderness. Someone already mentioned the campfire program but during the day, you can rent bikes and/or canoes for exploring a place most people overlook.
Take an afternoon at Epcot and do nothing but the entertainment, especially in World Showcase (the Jammitors in Future World are great too).
Find all the Kodak picture spots and take a photo of a different member of the family at each one. Find the pressed pennies for each of the countries in World Showcase.
Miniature golf is always fun. It took us two hours to do the fairways course at Fantasia. If you just want to have fun, don't even keep score (although keep to the maximum of six strokes per hole so you don't hold up the people behind you).
Take the Behind the Seeds Tour.
Well I haven't been in way too long...but what we used to love doing was spending part of a day or so just at the hotel (ours was the Contemporary) and renting some boats. They have (or at least had) a wide variety of watercrafts. I'm sure other resorts do as well.
Renting a boat is always a hit with my family. I highly suggest a dinner show! The Hoop-Dee-Doo is my favorite. We use to go to the Luau every year too, but I havn't been to The Spirit of Aloha yet. I'm sure it's great. We always enjoy going to the other resorts and checking them out too. I'm sure you already thought of the water parks. Your kids are the perfect ages for that.

We were in the family parade (or whatever it's called) in December. When you see them setting up the carts for the parade, just kind of loiter around and you might get picked.
