Have you all see the new iPhone? I had heard rumors and figured it was going to be awesome but it is even better then I thought it would be. All I can say is... WOW!

    Wish I used Cingular!
Hmmmm, when is my Verizon contract up?

    Scroll down to 9:43am...

i could say tons about the new microprocessor in it, the "brains" behind the whole thingy, but let's just say a lot of the orginal development was made on this Padder's watch in this Padder's factory at this Padder's company

and i never did mention when this Padder's company teamed with Apple less than a year ago, the "Apple Kiefer" roll out commercial was partially filmed at this Padder's factory as well - they were here filming for about two 12-hr days, and i can easily tell how much footage came out of it all from here - about 5 seconds

.....just wondering why Apple's stock was up 6% today, while the company making the "brains" for the whole thing was flat.

I don't plan on paying $400 or $500 anytime soon for a phone. It would be years and years before I would get something like this. It would also have to shrink in size a lot for me to see this as my new phone. Very cool concepts though.

Remember how pricey the Razors were when they first hit the market and they don't have a 1/3 the capacity/ablities these will...I've already told my brat that those phones are on our Christmas list.

It is a very innovative and interesting design, but it also has some shortcomings that knock it down a few notches in my eyes. First and foremost, I'm disappointed that it is apparently a locked/exclusive phone for Cingular. A lot of the early rumors had suggested that it would not be tied to any specific network, even suggesting that Apple might offer both GSM (Cingular and T-Mobile) and CDMA (Sprint and Verizon) versions in order to allow compatibility with all the major networks in the US. I'm disappointed that Apple didn't go against the usual network-exclusive arrangements common with US cellphone makers.

I also am very surprised that the data compatibility is only with the slower EDGE network and not with any of the faster 3G networks. Essentially, that is the equivalent of a desktop/laptop with dial-up instead of broadband. Particularly at the high prices that Apple is charging, it is quite surprising that they are behind the times when it comes to this key aspect.

I do like the concept of this phone, though, and I may take a much closer look at the 2nd generation a year or so down the road.

I've been told that I will also have to wait for G2, since our current cellular contracts still have 15 months on them.

Hopefully they'll address some of the issues Jeff raised by then.

I wasn't reading the thread. But as soon as I saw your name as a poster on it, I was here.

It was a toss-up between holy crap, a comment about the temperature in Hades, and a quote from a movie that was on the tip of my tongue but I couldn't remember and Doc was no help. I have since then figured out (thank you Google) that it was from Ghostbusters - "Human Sacrifice, Dogs and Cats Living Together--Mass Hysteria!"

    Sorry I disappointed

I think it is a sleek looking device. However, the price is WAY to steep for me. (I briefly considered it till then...) I mean, I have a phone and if I want, I can get an iPod for much less. Not interested in the data transfer and the like.

While Alton Brown does not like uni-taskers, I am of the thought that a phone should be a phone, a computer should be a computer, and an MP3 player should be an MP3 player. That may be so yesterday, but then again, I have a $50 MP3 player that works great for me and my cell phone was free works great as well.

Now, if they offered it to me for $99 with a new commitment, then maybe I would reconsider. But at the same time, I think I would wait for the second generation.

I loved how Jobs said at the presentation. "It has a 3 and 1/2 inch screen. Its HUGE!" It may be "sizable" for a display, but to describe it as huge was just pure marketing speak.

The search function is like the Force. It may take practice, but the more you use it, the more control you will have over it!

I think I have to disagree with you here. Modern cell phones are actually full-powered computers that happen to have telephone keypads and radio tranceivers. Why not use that existing processing power--that you're already paying for--for other features? I have a Palm Treo 650 and love it. It is a full-featured cell phone, PDA, Internet device, camera, etc. It could play music if I bothered to install a music player application. It is however getting a little long in the tooth--almost two years old--so if it wasn't that the iPhone is locked to Cingular (spit!) through a multi-year exclusive contract then I might consider it. Also the price is somewhat discouraging. There's some discussion of the 2.0 version, which might have more storage and/or connect to other wireless networks. Meanwhile I'm waiting impatiently for the Treo 750p to come to Sprint.

The display is "huge" compared to other smartphones such as Windows Mobile and Treo devices. In fact, I think the closest analog to the iPhone is... the Newton!

Andrew, I dont think its a matter of disagreeing... its just a matter of preference. At the same time, not everyone needs such a high tech device while others really rely on such for many things, business and personal related. The point - get the tool that suits your needs.

But the thing is that you say that your Treo is getting "long in the tooth" after only 2 years - and that is part of my point. Now, if you want to replace the device you would have to shell out several hundred dollars to do so. (Assuming no carrier discount.) Doing things separately means that you replace only what you need to replace. (Or whatever gets lost/broken/stolen) That has always been the thing that pushed me away from such a multi-function device. Lets face it, there are pros and cons to each way of doing it.

I do understand that the screen is quite large for such a device... but the tone in his voice was really enthusiastic in a humorous sort of way. It was almost like he was describing it like a 100" plasma HDTV. I guess I should have put a after my comment to denote some humor. The display really does look like it will be one of the devices strongest points. I mean, the touch display really looked top notch and added to the ease of use.

The search function is like the Force. It may take practice, but the more you use it, the more control you will have over it!

And if I read correctly, a 2-year contract commitment/renewal is required as part of the purchase...meaning, us general public folks won't be able to buy the phone outright.

If indeed the above is true--I dunno about you, but I don't particularly care for the "the ONLY way we'll let you buy the phone is if you commit to a contract" requirement...especially given that there apparently won't be any discounted pricing it the iPhone is purchased under a contract commitment...

True, but keep in mind that the Moto RAZR--from what I've read elsewhere--was/is Motorola's best-selling (in terms of units sold) phone model ever. No, the RAZR doesn't have nearly the same capability as the iPhone...but apparently that didn't stop gazillions of folks (yes, I'm exaggerating a bit but not by much) from purchasing one. At a $499/$599 price tag, I seriously doubt the iPhone will outsell the RAZR, no matter how great its capabilities may be. Now if Cingular (and/or whoever else will eventually be allowed to offer it) eventually drops the price of the iPhone to say $200...then I can see it being one of the best-selling phones of all-time.

Don't get me wrong--I like the iPhone myself...it's just that I think there won't be a very high demand for it, at this time, due to its very-high selling price and contract-only commitment.

I second support for the Palm Trio. I love mine. I check my email on it and texting is really easy. Full video, MP3, yadda yadda. and I love google maps on it. If only they would design more websites for mobile devices.

    iPhone's True Cost: $1936 -- Consumerist
Here's how much an iPhone will really cost you.

    • $640 Phone - $599 plus tax (~8%)
    • $60/mo Voice Plan - cheapest plan with unlimited nights and weekends
    • $40/mo MEdia Max 3000 Bundle - includes 3000 texts and unlimited MediaNet
    • $8/mo Fees

Total ownership cost for the first year: $1936
That price needs to come way down before I'd even consider it, I'm afraid.
