With the current run of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, they are also showing the new Pixar short "Mike's New Car". This short features Mike and Sully from "Monsters, Inc." and was created for inclusion with the upcoming video release of that film.
The short is clever and cute, although it doesn't really manage the same level of hilarity that Pixar has generally accomplished with their more original short subjects (or with the feature films).
The title of the short pretty clearly outlines the premise. The short involves Mike showing Sulley his brand new car for the first time, which provides a framework for a bunch of sight gags and one-liners, most of which do generate their fair share of laughs. The whole short takes place in just the one location and Mike and Sulley are the only characters that appear.
Billy Crystal and John Goodman do once again provide the voices for Mike and Sulley. The behind-the-scenes credits also were pretty similar to "Monsters, Inc.", with Pete Docter and David Silverman again credits as directors and John Lasseter as the Executive Producer. Interestingly, the El Capitan showed the short with a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, so it was obviously made with TV presentation in mind and it should not be letterboxed on the DVD.
This short subject is definitely good for some laughs and will be a nice bonus with the "Monsters, Inc." DVDs and video tapes. It also is definitely a nice extra for those that go to see "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" this week.
