DVC points question
Hi - I can't seem to get thru to DVC this morning, and we were wondering...can DVC points be used at other non -DVC resorts (POR, Poly, Pop Century...) at WDW? and where would the point conversion charts be found?
Thanks - hope everyone had a nice 4th!

Disclaimer: I am not a DVC member (yet) but this is what I know... I will stand corrected as necessary.
You can use points for other non-dvc resorts but at the same time, the # of points needed may not be worth it. We were told that it is best if you stick with just using the points at a DVC resort. At the same time, the points needed would be converted to "reservation" points and cannot be converted back to your pool of points usable for DVC resorts. In other words, once you made up your mind, you have more of a committment in those plans.
I wish I could find the booklet I got from DVC as it showed different point values for some non-DVC resorts. What it came down to it was that we could stay at a nicer place for basicly the same (or less) relative costs of the Values or some/most of the Moderates.

You can use points to stay in most of the moderates but I don't believe that you can "downgrade" to the value resorts.
You can use this DVC point calculator drop down to see the Disney Hotels which you can use

After looking at that calculator, there appears to be a signifigant difference between # of points needed for DVC vs non-DVC resorts.
I did a impromptu comparison between POR and BCV on Oct 1 - it took more points to stay at POR... Makes the choice easy.

I just checked the DVC wed site to make sure and the Disney Collection includes most of the moderates and upscale hotels as well as the cabins and campsites at Fort Wilderness, but does not include the value hotels. As Gusman stated, your vacation club points will be converted and then cannot be used as vacation points but must be used at one of the other participating locations. The DVC web site has the complete listings with up to date points charts.

great - thanks for the info everyone.
One more piece in our puzzle!

the only thing I would add to this is a big why... The conversion to any non DVC resort comes at such a points premium that it's hardly worth it unless every other DVC is booked and that is the only time you can use the points.
Grateful for all God has done for me, and for having Wfoxx by my side.

I understand where Ericles is coming from...
We had the same question when we first started looking into DVC mainly as a way to see how we can use the fewest number of points. At that time, we were loving resorts such as POR and thought a "cheaper" resort would allow us to use fewer points per stay and/or stay longer. As the rate chart website shows, that is certainly not the case. While the option is there, as you said, it comes at a premium - a premium worth avoiding unless necessary.
Lets face it, while many find DVC membership a huge benefit, getting into it is not necessarily "cheap." I think many wonder how they can maximize the usage of their points while controling entry costs.
But even with this... I hope to make that decision next year but I have to pay off some debt first.

Why? no reason in particular - mostly we'd like to be as educated about the whole thing as possible before we go down and hear the spiel from DVC....just like to know exactly what I'm getting and what I can do with it....and I was just wondering what we can do with these points and how best to use them to the best benefit for our family - that's all.

IMHO the best thing to do with points is stay at WDW.
0n the list, but in no particular order
1. Staying at disnelyand paris
2. Staying at Disneyland
3. Going on the disney cruise
4. Staying at a interval international location like Door County
