urgent care near or in disneyland resort?
Hey everyone.
I haven't posted in a while but we're leaving for Disneyland tomorrow, and my mom is having slight pain in her ear. While we don't want to cancel the trip after months of waiting, we want her to be okay. I was just wondering if:
1.) There was anything we could do for the ear.
2.) Or if there was an urgent care inside or near the DL Resort that we could take her to if the pain got worse.
Thank you so much.

As a veteran of many ear infections, I've found that putting a cotton ball that has been dampened with mineral oil eases the pain. I don't know if it's the warmth or the easing of pressure changes, but it helps. Depending on her physical condition, it might be a good idea for your mother to call her doctor to see if she needs antibiotics. They don't always give them for ear infections nowadays, but her doctor is the best person to decide. Good luck. If it's any comfort, when I was a child I always seemed to get ear infections when we travelled. I remember many trips starting in the emergency room where I got a shot of antibiotics. I always had a good trip anyway.

UCI Medical Center in Orange is the largest acute care facility........ closest to Disneyland.....they are a few exits up the I-5 freeway going south. You exit right at State College Blvd. and go south. Once State College turns into the City Drive, the Medical Center is on the right, across from The Block at Orange Mall.
IMO, that's not the very best medical facility in Orange County, though IMHO IMHO IMHO.
The very very best is Hoag Presbytarian in Newport IMHO IMHO IMHO----but that's a lot further away from Disneyland.

I forgot... sport's stores sell ear drops for "swimmer's ear". Basically, they are just vinegar and alcohol in water. They alter the ear canal conditions to discourage infections. This won't cure a full blown ear infection, but I've found that if I use them when my ear is just starting to hurt, it tends to cure the problem.

If you are staying at any of the resort hotels they have doctors that will come to your hotel room.
Next trip Oct 8th-14th

Swimmer's ear is an infection outside of the ear drum. An ear infection occurs on the other side of the ear drum. Nothing you put into your ear will be able to penetrate the ear drum and prevent, discourage, or cure an inner ear infection unless your ear drum is perforated or you have tubes. (Been thru both those scenarios, many times, with both my little ones) As for urgent care, UCI, or St. Joseph's are decent and resaonably close.

A lot of ear infections start in the ear canal and then move into the inside of the ear. If the infection has advanced past the ear drum then (as you pointed out) the ear drops won't do a darn thing to cure it. But if the infection is just starting to inflame the outer ear, the drops often nip it in the bud. Really, swimmer's ear is just chronic ear infections caused by the moisture that tends to remain in the ear canal allowing bacteria to grow. The vinegar and alcohol in the drops alter the chemistry of the outer canal enough that bacteria can't grow. I've always had ear infections, had my tonsils out, had tubes in my ears, but nothing stopped them until I started 1) faithfully drying my ears with q-tips after showering or swimming and 2) using the swimmer's ear stuff whenever I got a mild earache. I'd check with a doctor before administering any treatment to children, though, or anybody with a compromised immune system.

Thank you everyone for all your help. We convinced my mom to go to the urgent care here, despite the two-hour wait, and she got exactly what she needed.
Thanks again!

those all sound like great ideas.....i just have one question...are you flying to disneyland? If so you might want to make sure you don't tell anyone on the airplane that your mom has an ear infection. I have seen people get denied boarding because they were having ear problems. Its because of the pressure change in altitude, and the inability to clear your ears. Anyone else hear of this?

baloo,
not sure on what airline u heard this but my dd 's mom is a cabin attendant on airline company and she actually helps the passengers to take care of their ear problems, the major problem is during the descent and landing, she warms up some wet tissus and put them in 2 goblets that the passenger apply on his/her ears during that part of the trip and the steam from the wet hot tissus in the goblets helps to dilatate the ear drum so the pressure in the inner ear is the same as in the outer ear... and have a pack of tissues to have your nose clear (the stuff in the sinus can also lead to ear damage in planes)
and guess how they call them? MICKEY MOUSE'S EARS because they usually use them with little kids...
so don't hesitate to say your ears hurt and maybe suggest that tip to the cabin attendants, they can only help you...
take care

Walgreens carries several brands of ear drops that stop the pain. My kids LOVE them!

Check out Day 3 my trip report from August http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/showthread.php?t=46307. We had four ear infections and got a doctor to come to our hotel.

I believe that Western Medical Center on Anaheim Blvd. & Ball road has an urgent care as well.

Wish I got help like that. When I was in Europe I got a cold. Flying back I wasnt sick anymore, but my head was still filled with mucous and stuffy. So I could not equalize at all in one ear. When we landed in New York I wanted to die. The pain was so bad, my ear didnt feel better until a few hours later when we got back in the air to finish the flight to San Diego. =(

I wouldnt worry too much, but keep an eye on it...and I am sure that @ the Anaheim resort there will be doctors..
