A couple of other things I noticed that I think are different.
In the seance room, there is a nutcracker in front of Leota's table that mouths her words along with her. Don't remember that from last year.
At the very end as you go up the speed ramp, next to Sally there used to a "moon" that showed Sandy Claws and his reindeer going in a circle. The moon is still there but the effect is new this year and done much better.

I love the HMH.
It is much more fun to look at.
Last Trip: March 3, 2006 - March 5, 2006 to DL
Next Trip: May 21, 2007 - June 3, 2007

Fun is wherever you find it...
I have two more - but confirm it if it was in there last year...
1) MANY MANY icicles in the graveyard - too bad they are the standard ones you hang (you can see the hooks). I guess when you have to do several hundered you take what you can get
2) Zero floating ghostlike in the ballroom scene trying to put a pumpkin on top of the tree... he's up high just left of center - so look for him..
one thing I noticed was missing - Zero usually spins around in the top turret of the mansion (you see him from outside). There were drawn curtains today so nothing in the day - but maybe you can see him at night.

What new stuff are you referring to? I'll admit that I don't pay that much attention to just NBC stuff, so while I know some stuff is new (fuzzy dice with Jackheads), the only HMH new item that we saw was the mini-doom buggie with Jack, Zero and pumpkins. I was actually disappointed that there wasn't more HMH stuff.

I was told that the HMH 2005 items (shirts, sweatshirts, etc.) won't be out until closer to Halloween...probably around 2 weeks or so.

mostly what I have seen at Dizpins and Disney Gallery web sites.. all will be publicly available but not likely to be mass market. I was just noticing they had so much art-based items and non-mass appeal stuff.. and without an event to tie it around..

But if you look at that stuff, it's all Nightmare related, not HMH - big difference. For the events the past 4 years, much of the merchandise has had a HMH tie-in, not just Nightmare. From all accounts, they've known for some time now that they wouldn't be doing an event, so I would expect they didn't go all out for the HMH merchandise like they've done in previous years.

Pardon my ignorance.. but what event do they normally do?

The last four years, they have had a special event coinciding with the opening of Haunted Mansion Holiday. If you go to this link, you'll see a list of event coverage. I've got coverage posted of all four events.

I've heard there's a hidden mickey in the ballroom, lower right corner I think?

This thread is depressing.
First, HMH is networked.. and now I find out about a really cool event.. that's not happing this year. I love NBC and so does my sadistic 4 year old (loved the Corpse Bride as well). So sad.

Aaaaaaaaaaah. Gotcha. I misunderstood what he said then. I was picturing Sally inside there. I was hoping Leota would be floating though. The friend I am going with in November has never seen her floating. I still don't know how they do it. Shhhhhh. Don't tell me.

They play with the plates regularly. Sometimes there is one, sometimes there isn't, and the position is changeable.

The urban legend version is that strict "show standards" for the Haunted Mansion either do not mention or specifically forbid a hidden Mickey, so during regular inspections by Show Standards and Imagineering personnel the hidden Mickey is removed. It's then promptly replaced by attraction Cast Members.
No idea how much of that is actually true, but I've heard essentially the same story from several sources.

The changing portraits room has reverted back to the slowly changing pictures effect instead of the newer (or last years HMH) picture changing syncronized to lightning flashes. Personally I would have to say that I do prefer the slowly changing picture effect (probably since its a bit of an original nostalgic effect or something) although it does cause some guest traffic backup since people are waiting to watch all the pictures change.
I still cannot figure out why all the green shades are pulled down on the main floor of the mansion (outside) if you look at the windows you can even see some of the drapes that are covered up by the green shades, (it does not really matter although it does not make sense unless there are items being stored behind the windows or something (but it has been like that all year)
Anyways, that is another story.
Bottom Line:
Main change I can think about between this year and last years HMH is Madam Leota is stationary and Portraits change slowly once again.
-
Oh, I was thinking that it was a new hidden mickey, not the same plates one. (though thanks for the reason why it's always changing

Spoilers... if you don't wanna know, don't read below... ooooohaha!
The only real changes (to HMH) I've noticed this year are:
1. There are more pumpkins in the grass area near the Halloween King figure in front of the Mansion.
2. The Jack o' lantern painting in the Portait Hallway is back to the original painting from Year 1 and Year 2.
(Stacked pumpkins, that change into stacked Jack o'lanterns)
Year 3 (the "Find the 13 Hidden Oogies" year) and Year 4 (last year) that painting looked the same as the pre-change painting now (Stacked pumpkins), but it changed into an 'Oogie Boogie headed stack of Jack o 'lanterns' painting.
The original painting from HMH Year 1 and Year 2 is back.
3. The Suit of Armour in the hallway near the endless hallway and first Zero (which has always floated), now has a Jack o' Lantern on it's head.
4. A fuzzy mental remembrance (I've only ridden HMH twice this year, so far) about something Hitchhiking Ghosts-looking in a corner of the ballroom. Just the outline or something, that is new to me. (The Hidden Mickey's on the table come and go and change places daily sometimes, it doesn't matter if it's HM or HMH).
5. Zero is no longer floating/moving on the table, running thru the cake and into the bending & blowing 'Birthday Girl'. Zero is off to the left more, between a few dancers and below the swirling books in the 'extra HMH only room'.
6. The yearly changing 'centerpiece cake' on the table in the Ballroom is now the evil wreath from NBC and the Hallway of Doors in the HMH. Which looks cool IMO!
7. There was a little re-arrangement in the attic, and I noticed at least a couple new stacks of jack o' lantern's and maybe a couple new gift boxes. I know at the attic is more crowded than last year. It seems like there is more gift boxes, I don't remember as many names all around the attic on personalized gift tags on gift boxes.
8. I thought on my first ride this year that one of the quintet band had a Grinch mask on. Didn't seem that way my 2nd ride. It would be kinda surreal if Mister Grinch (Thurl!) was hidden somewhere. Not directly relating to HM or HMH or NBC, but to Thurl and the whole concept of an Evil Christmas.
9. Snow looked a bit thicker and different in the graveyard and this year there are less Jack o' Lanterns near the singing ones. There were a few more Jack o' Lanterns in Year 3 and Year 4 when there was a Hidden Oogie amongst them and those are now gone or moved. Maybe those new attic ones?
10. Oogie Boogie seemed to have a different head and/or hat on this year.
Not sure. His hair might have just been messed up or the lighting not as ti has been in the past.
11. The lighted shadow of Jack (Sandy Claws) and his sleigh seen on a moon-shaped white background near Sally on a Xmas present (in the HM 'Little Leota'/"Ghostess" location) is now a video screen with Jack seen much more frequently on it than the old method, so more Guests get to see it while on the speed ramp.
11 things, some new, some changed/slightly differrnt.
Some people and on some boards have said nothing is different, nothing is changed, nothing is new.
11 fairly noticable new things and/or changes from Year 4 are far from nothing.
DL could have done more, could have done less and really, could have done nothing if they wanted to. HM is a legend in it's own time and is popular al year long, and is even more immensely popular from Oct to Jan now.
Everything new, everything changed, 'everything HM -to- HMH -to- HM' to me, is super cool and as a DL fan, it's all incredibly appreciated, year to year and year after year. Thanks Disney!
The HMH changing hallway portaits have never lightning-flash changed. It's always been the slow change. The HM portaits only returned to lightning-flash changes last year. IT had been decades since any of them lightning-flash changed. The HMH portaits never have. And they still don't. That is a Haunted Mansion-only effect, not a HMH effect.
Madame Leota floated the first day of HMH this year, (before the lamp above her was returned,) but shes not supposed to float during HMH,
'Madam LeFloata' is also is supposed to be a Haunted Mansion-only effect.

I haven't remembered to look yet this year, but last year, they were in the ballroom, on a hill that you can see in the first or second window on the right side. Sometimes they're hard to see because they're hidden by the blowing shredded curtains.

I've seen that before. I didn't count that as new for this HMH.
I've seen the outline of Jack in the other upper window as well, with the wind blow shreded blinds. I thought someone, somewhere had mentioned something HitchHiking Ghosts-looking more at ground level and closer to the organist.
Once again, I love the yearly changing centerpiece cake on the table in the Ballroom. This year's is another really cool visual.
