    Gosford Park

Has anyone else seen this yet? I thought it was excellent, and not just for folks who like the Merchant Ivory type films--the cast list alone should cause one to want to check it out. However, it was one of those films with seventy thousand characters that you only start to keep straight halfway through. Worth a second viewing for sure.

    Gosford Park

What a wonderful film. Maggie Smith steals every scene she's in. I loved everything about this one. I sometimes have problems w/ Robert Altman's films, but no complaints here.
I had no idea who did it... it kept me guessing.

Please don't ruin it for everyone else be revealing the murderer's identity.
Here's a clue... it wasn't me nor Lisap.

I also thought this was a great movie. Thoroughly enjoyed it even though for the first 30 minutes, I was totally confused as to who was who. I plan to see it again now that I'm more familiar with the characters.

Maggie Smith was fabulous. But Helen Mirren and Alan Bates were outstanding. In fact, the whole dang cast was great.

I was expecting another one of those obscure arty Robert Altman films but I was happily misinformed. Totally engaging with wonderful plot twists.

Hope it shows up tomorrow on the nominees for Best Picture.

Wonderful film. If you liked it, you must watch it a second time. It's amazing how much the foreknowledge you gain about so many of the characters the first time around pays off in enjoyment the second time around.

Yes, Maggie Smith was wonderful as usual, but you know who really caught my eye--Clive Owen, and not just because he's so georgous (which he is). This guy is gonna be the next Big Thing in my opinion...

    Clive Owen

I just saw him in Croupier last week (rental) and it was cool to see him in Gosford Park--didn't realize who he was until I saw his face. I think I need to catch up on what he's made so far.

The movie was very good if you can absorb the first third. The final third is full of payoffs in every respect. Great work by the young lady who played Maggie Smith's servant. She was fantastic. Also, Ryan Phillippe didn't suck, which was a nice suprise and something of a change for him.

This is Player-level Robert Altman, not Cookie's Fortune-level Altman.

In last month's Premiere magazine, they had a great article by Bob Balaban (who's in the movie and writer too). One of the most interesting sections was how Clive Owen learned how to play all of these songs for the film. When he started, he could barely play.

All those songs you heard were him actually playing. The article said it took take after take but he got it! I'm a pianist and know how tough that is for someone who doesn't have a lot of performing experience under their belt.

That made me a Clive Owen fan. I'll have to check out Croupier. Wonder what else he's done?

I think you mean Jeremy Northam, who played Ivor Novello, the silent film star. He was wonderful too--I read that the Gosford Park soundstrack has all of his songs on it. I Clive Owen was the mysterious servant...(no spoilers here).

Here's something I didn't realize--that Ivor Novello was a real silent film star. Was I the only one Here is a pic of him--

    Ivor Novello

So I'm not up to date on my silent film stars....

Yep, I realized it on my way to work this morning!

Obviously, I was more confused about who was who than I thought.....

I didn't know about Ivor Novello either. I know the big ones like Pickford, Fairbanks, Chaplin, etc., but he was new to me.

    Thanks for catching the boo-boo!
