Local channel ABC 7 here in the LA area is reporting an 'out of control' car plowed into a some people on Katella Ave & Disneyland Way this evening. At least 1 confirmed fatality and others injured. I dont have any other details other then that.

I should add they had the news helicopter up over the seen and the entire intersection and then some is roped off and surrounded by official vehicles.
Sounds like a typical day in L.A.
I have a stressful job.
But I love it.
I saw it too and they said that Katella was completely closed in that block- I think it's between Disneyland Dr and Harbor.

Sadly, on channel 9 news now. A 7 year old boy was hit and killed Famlily members injured. Family of 7.

It's sad to hear that someone is killed in any accident. I hope the family can make it through this okay.
I have a stressful job.
But I love it.
That is so tragic. Poor little guy and his family.
One thing that i thought was missing after the large rehabilitation of the surrounding area of the resort were pedestrian crossing bridges. It is scar to see people drive on Katella and Harbor speeding when hundreds of people cross with kids
Yes, they made it seem safer to be a pedestrian in the resort area, and then epect people to cross the street without any protection. bridges would have been a better way.
When I hear about this kind of thing I really think maybe moving the driving age to 18 might be a good thing!
How terrible for the little guy and his family. Having a little guy, that just turned 7 today, who is the light of our lives made me choke up reading this story.

Las Vegas has 4-way pedestrian bridges at LV Blvd/Trop, LV Blvd/Flamingo, and now completing bridges at LV Blvd / Spring Mtn covering Wynn, TI, Fashion Show, and Venetian.
They work well.
Its about time they did something over Harbor - of course, Harbor is a National Defense road, so maybe they can't - but they should!
On the Katella crossing, thats a fair distance down and most of those hotels are reached by Shuttle. But anything is a start, especially if a third park will eventually appear in the Strawberry Field.

Why doesn't the city put out the bazillions of dollars to build a full blown monorail system in downtown Anaheim and then charge fare just like they would for all the other public transportation? This might relieve some of the traffic.

We left DL at 6:30 pm, while waiting for the parking lot tram I saw a helicoptor hovering above. Pointed this out to my kids and within minutes, two more arrived. I thought to myself this doesn't look good. Sorry to hear about the tragedy. Our prays go out to this boy, his family and all who were involved.

I know Californians (and I suppose most non-new yorkers) are more considerate of traffic lights and marked pedestrian crossings, but i'm not sure a pedestrian bridge would solve all the problems, even if it were possible. considering the length and commercialness of harbor, i imagine people would be crossing at any point anyway. not to mention there'd probably be some major opposition. it'd create quite an eye sore (sad, but true) and end up blocking some otherwise potentially desirable views i'd imagine depending on where it/they were placed.

The areas around Disneyland need to be REQUIRED reduced-speed areas (30 mph max, 20 mph max when lights are flashing, which would be during peak pedestrian hours). All the intersections need to be heavily monitored with video cameras to better catch violators' license plates, plus these intersections need to be manned with a visible cop car ready to swoop in an nail any violators. The fines for violating the speed need to be very heavy, too - $500 to $1000+.

As I recall, there is a pedestrian walking tunnel at Knotts from the parking lot, and to get to the shopping area there is a very large walkway with a street light; a two way street, not four way.
From what I just heard on the KTLA Morning News, the driver was blinded by the setting sun.

Unfortunately, groups of tourists tend to keep crossing the street even when they should stop and wait for the next green light.
Some municipal authority (City of Anaheim? State of California? Doesn't matter.) has put fences in the middle of Harbor Boulevard to discourage crossing at the wrong places.
Las Vegas has done a good job of this at some intersections on the Strip, including Tropicana (with four major casino/hotels on the four corners) and Flamingo (with five). However, other areas of the Strip have "beautification" elements that make it more hazardous, as a cab driver once told me: A jaywalker on a traffic island is visible; a jaywalker standing between two palm trees is not. And the intersection just north of Tropicana, by the Monte Carlo, is a disaster.

First time at Disneyland since the major remodel, was following Parking signs on Disney Way, employee flagged us into a lot (I forget the name). It wasn't until after I parked that I found out a) no tram service, b) getting to the park involved walking about 4 blocks on city streets (fending off street vendors) and crossing busy Harbor Blvd. I was uncomfortable with the traffic and crowded sidewalks.
After that, I knew better and figured out how to get to the parking garage. MUCH MUCH better experience.
And yes, with parking lots that involve walking on city streets I really believe there should be better pedestrian walkways.
