I have no title-I'm a commoner
Goodbye to George Harrison
I heard the news as soon as I turned on my tv at 5:30 this morning. Although we expected it...its still sad. Another great one of our era gone. I wasn't a huge Beatles fan as a kid growing up...but as an adult, I can appreciate their influence on the music world.
As I think back, I couldn't ski without "Here Comes The Sun" in my head as I went down the slopes...

I've always thought of George as a quiet giant in the Beatles. Wrote some great great songs and played a mean guitar.
Sad to see you go George. You're still fab.

Oh my God! No media for me yet this morning, so I learn of this heartbreaking news right here on MousePad. Excuse me, but I am in shock right now and freaked out.
George was the only Beatle I have ever met. I was having dinner at the Mandarin Cove in L.A.'s Beverly Center and he sat down with a friend at the table next to me. This was in the early 90's. I was barely able to eat my food, I was so excited. Living in L.A., I see tons of celebrities and it doesn't faze me, but this was beyond the pale. Naturally, I did not disturb his meal, but after he left the restaurant I swiped his napkin and then approached him in an elevator. I asked him for his autograph (something I never, ever do). And he replied in his thick Liverpudlian voice, "Well, seeing as you stole my napkin and all."
I gave the autograph to my best friend who is an even bigger Beatles fan than I, but I still have the napkin that he wiped his mouth on. Stains of his long gone meal and scraps of George Harrison dna from his spittle still reside on my weird but most cherished Beatles souvenir.
Farewell, George.

Sorry innerSpaceman... George had been ill for quite some time, and had the fortune to leave in the presence of all his loved ones. He had been fighting various cancers and tumors for some years, and had been in the news in the last week for switching to a more traditional (and extremely aggressive) chemotherapy program in Los Angeles after other treatments failed to put him in remission.
I don't mean to make negative comparisons, but after reading news stories that reported that George was severely ill and near death, I have to be glad he had his time to say his good-byes. The same cannot be said for John, whom I wept and mourned for many days after his sudden and violent death in December 1980. It didn't help that I was a huge Beatles fan at the time (although more of a Wings fan).
This does put the nail in the coffin for any possible Beatles reunion, though. I didn't think a reunion performance of George, Paul and Ringo would ever be a "Beatles reunion" anyway (and I don't care what people say about Julian stepping in) because when John died, the spirit of the Beatles was never the same. Oh well. Sigh.

Thanks for your kind words, lani. It's true that George's death is so much less horrible than John's was. And not only did George not die violently, did have time to say goodbye to loved ones, and did have time to prepare for the end, but I also believe that, what with the spiritual being that he was and is, he is perfectly accepting of the crossover to the afterlife.
I've no doubt that John and other loved ones who have gone before him will guide George at the start of this next journey of the spirit.

Was anyone else watching Conan O'Brian Thursday night when they flashed the news of his death across the screen? It was pretty weird.
Good-bye to an amazing musician.

The thing is the Beatles and George Harrison are Timeless. They have withstood the test of time. To this day you will find many High school kids claiming the Beatles as the greatest rock n roll band of all time.

If you pick up Rolling Stone or Entertainment Weekly, they have some good essays on George Harrison and his death (especially Rolling Stone).
