    Box Office Game, Week 13

Last week's entries can be found here. Rules of the game (and anybody can start playing at any time and have a chance at something) are here.

    This Weekend's Game
Four movies open this week on at least 800 screens.

Without a Paddle is interesting. Because if you look at the movie poster for the movie it appears that Seth Green is close in height to Matthew Lillard. When in fact they're not even close. This has shattered my faith in movie marketing departments fulfilling their role in honestly helping me choose where to spend my entertainment dollars. I call for a full boycott. Without a Paddle will open on 2,800 screens.

Following the current rage for prequels, Exorcist: The Beginning opens this weekend. Presumably it will amply demonstrate that state of the art visual effects will significantly decline by the time the first movie is made. At least they realized that the proper title The Exorcist: The Beginning sounded stupid. It will open on 2,500 screens.

The Discovery Channel's Shark Week hits theaters near you this weekend with the story of two open water divers left behind by a dive captain who can't count. Based on a true story (and unfortunately a story not so uncommon as you might think), it is apparently pretty intense thought I suspect dramamine might be in order for the easily queasied. 2,200 screens.

The real horror this weekend, though, is reserved for parents. Yes, another Benji movie. It has been 30 years since the first Benji movie and apparently somebody decided it was time for another. At least this one is real and not CGI like Scooby and Garfield. Somehow I don't see it playing into our game this weekend, but it is opening on 800 screens.

One note for players. This weekend will begin the road to the final weekend. This will be the third to last weekend in the game and this means that those who have played every weekend (strangely, I'm not among them) will begin dropping their lowest scores.

To enter, copy the following entry form into a reply to this thread and fill in the blanks with your guesses. Submit entry by 9pm Pacific time, Friday, August 20.

    Last Weekend's Game
I apologize for comparing Yu-Gi-Oh! to Pokemon, in last week's results. They are completely different. After all, when the first Pokemon movie came out in 1999, it won the weekend with $39 million.

But still, Yu-Gi-Oh! did better than anyone gave it credit for and cost the entire board 10 points.

The final numbers for the top ten were:
    1. Alien vs. Predator - $38.3 million
    2. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement - $23.0
    3. Collateral - $16.2
    4. Yu-Gi-Oh! - $9.5
    5. The Bourne Supremacy - $8.6
    6. The Village - $7.2
    7. The Manchurian Candiate - $6.0
    8. I, Robot - $3.9 million
    9. Little Black Book - $3.8
    10. Spider-Man 2 - $3.5 million

The total box office for the top ten was $119.8 million.

Jeff's. It was a copy & paste error duplicating part of his entry twice. I've fixed it.

This time I seriously forgot it was Friday...I don't expect a repeat performance of my almost-high-enough score last week, especially since I'm going to break from the trend.

    1. Open Water - $17.8 million
    2. Alien vs. Predator - $14.5 million
    3. Exorcist: The Beginning - $14 million
    4. Princess Diaries 2 - $12.2 million
    5. Collateral - $10.1 million

Total Box Office - $94.8 million

Considering what the early box-office returns are showing, I doubt any of you have to worry about my late entry. It will most likely be my lowest score yet, and get thrown out anyway. If it gets thrown out for being late, so be it. I play for fun.

    Sophie:

I am usually away from my computer all day Friday until about 10PM(one hour past deadline)..........so I post my prediction on Thursday instead(without the benifit of seeing what everyone else is predicting)

    ......just a thought.

Just to satisfy you people, I am gonna post as close to the deadline as I can make it next Friday. I shall never be late again, and I will still get the scores I would've gotten regardless, and we can all move on with our lives.

Without a Paddle was #2. Ugh. I underestimated the appeal of Matthew Lillard. The trailer looked awful. I fear for this country.

I actually thought about putting it higher in my predictions because of the sheer number of ads that have been running for it over the last few weeks. I suspect awareness on the film was really high. I ended up hedging and putting it lower simply because the ads looked so terrible that I figured they might end up being more of a negative influence than a positive.

In the long run, I suspect that both "Without a Paddle" and "Princess Diaries 2" ended up higher on the rankings largely because of the three horror films splitting their audience. Note that all the numbers were fairly low this weekend.

I thought the same things, but I had guessed that White Castle would do better than it did simply because I thought it was ridiculously funny...dumb, but funny! For the same reason, I thought Without a Paddle would be too "dumb" to do well!

I didn't. Once they featured it for the Movie night reward on Big Brother 5, I figured a lot of peeps who cant make decisions for themselves would head right out and see it. Seems they did.

Hey, maybe for once i wont finish last?
