2004 Rose Parade - Grand Marshall
It was announced today that composer John Williams will be the Grand Marshall for the 2004 Tournament of Roses Parade. The theme of the parade this year will be music. Williams will also toss the coin at the Rose Bowl game.
As a big John Williams fan, I think he is an incredibly cool choice for this role.
Here is the Press Release

I, for one, couldn't be happier!
I am a huge fan of his, and I think the theme of the parade, music, is a great choice!

Cool! I'm a huge JW fan, and I hope to see a Star Wars float or something

I went to the Rose Bowl parade for the first time this year. I plan to go again, but this time -- no camping out on the sidewalk. I got no sleep. I am going to get a grandstand seat, pay my 20 bucks for parking and show up at 7:30AM with Starbucks in hand.

I don't suppose this is one of those Rose Parade leap years where the procession is held on January 2????
I'd love to go this year, but I'm not giving up New Years Eve to do so.

Nope, January 1, 2004 is on a Thursday, so the parade will be on Thursday.

That only happens when January 1 is a Sunday. The story being that Tournament House made a deal with the local clergy to implement the Never On Sunday policy, in exchange for the clergy asking God to make sure it never rained on the parade.
The parade has never been on Sunday, and it has never rained on the parade. Looks like the deal was a good one.

Well, then how does one get those cushy seats in the bleachers, where you can just show up blithely at 8am after a night of News Years revelry and watch the parade?

Here you go.

Thanks.
I may just do that this year.
I've only seen the Rose Parade live twice. Once, when I was new to California, we went to Pasadena on New Years Eve and just assumed that the bleachers were first come, first served. Boy, did we get a big surprise in the morning!
Another time, we had the good fortune to be invited to a brunch at a location on Colorado Blvd., with a second-storey balcony overlooking the Parade route (and which also came with 50-yard-line seats at the Rose Bowl). That was da bomb. The Tournament of Roses Princesses were sitting right behind us. I could hardly keep my eyes on the game.
I have also enjoyed going out to see the floats on display in (Sierra Madre?) park on a couple of occasions. It's so nice to be able to study the amazing detail work that goes into these fabulous creations.
This year, though, I think I'm up for the marching bands, and the equstrian units, and John Williams, and the floats rolling by too quickly.

As one of John Williams' biggest fans, I want to say it's about time!
