2014 Expedition Everest Challenge
Just read through the Wine & Dine Half Marathon weekend official guide (check it out here) and noticed that Expedition Everest is no longer listed on the "Save the Date" page. It's listed in Tower of Terror's Guide but not Wine & Dine.
Anyone know if it's coming back or not?

Oh I sure hope so! It's so on my bucket list. But, with three trips back to WDW next year (sans kids) I cannot ask to add one more. My husband has been mighty gracious supporting my goals for next year, I'm not going to push it.

I hope we don't loose it - it's the one runDisney that I don't have. Fingers crossed.
I will say it's not looking good. Disneyland's 2014 dates are now posted on runDisney. Expedition Everest is still showing 2013.

Maybe they're thinking of revamping it? They mixed up new stuff this year with the family edition earlier in the day and such.

It would be odd for runDisney to get out of the endurance-type of events when they are so popular now. But if there is a high insurance liability price, that may take them out of the market.

The rumor is that there will be a new event in that time frame, but nothing has been announced yet.

The big problem with EE is that they don't get all the runners to come out for it because it's such a short distance... but it costs them a lot to put on, anyway. They give medals and shirts and whatnot, and registration isn't cheap. But it requires that people have to sign up as teams, and it's relatively short (5K?). There's a lot of other faddish events now... mud runs, color runs, neon runs... EE is kind of like an obstacle run but it's its own thing. Maybe if they turn it completely into a real mud run, they might get a higher turnout? Just a guess.

But it is more than an obstacle 5k run. The scavenger hunt turns off a lot of people. I know the scavenger hunt helped me podium a few years ago. If we went just off the 5k, I would not have placed. I enjoyed the two parts of this race and that is one of the reasons it is so high on my bucket list of races to repeat.

Got my November Runner's World today and there was a runDisney ad; it does include the Expedition Everest Challenge, on May 2-3, 2014.

Yeah, they have to submit ads so far in advance that many of the races (especially runDisney ones) are sold out before the issue publishes. I'm still seeing a few Princess and Marathon weekend ads and it's been months since those closed out!

It's quite possible it's a case of "left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing" but if you go to the volunteer page, the event for next year is listed:
Expedition Everest Challenge, a race adventure with some bite, is coming Saturday, May 3, 2014 to
Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

I guess it's too much to ask for runDisney to actually address all the rumors and make a statement on the status of EE.

So we finally have confirmation. runDisney has updated the Expedition Everest website. Event date is May 3, 2014. Registration opens December 17, 2013 @ 12:00 p.m. EST.
You can sign up here to receive email notification when registration opens but given runDisney's track record of sending said reminder emails hours late, I would also recommend setting your own calendar reminder as well.

Simba's Pride
This race is on my list of races I want to do someday, but there is already so much that same weekend. Next year I'm planning on the Safari Park Half, and there is also the OC Half for 1/3 of the Beach Cities Challenge. Hope this race continues so I can fit it in eventually.

Registration opened just over two hours ago and all is quiet. Last year, it took almost a month before EE hit 51% capacity (such a difference between this event and the other runDisneys). It has to be a hard sell for a $120 5k even if it is runDisney.
Also keep in mind that the timelines between price increases is shorter this year. Last year, the final increase didn't happen until March 21st. This year, you'll be paying $15 more on January 15th and $30 more as of February 19th!

How much are the other RunDisney 5Ks? $120 seems steep, even if there is a scavanger component to this.

Well, the 2013 Mickey's Jingle Jungle 5k was $50. The 2014 Never Land 5k came in at $70.

And also interesting. For the first time that I can find, runDisney has a two-tier for the kids races. Normally it's the same price no matter when their are signed up. For EE, registration starts at $20 and bumps to $25 on April 3rd.

Early May is great for crowds. (As great as 'modern day Disney parks' can be).

Can you compare it to marathon weekend?
