Nope. No runDisney at RnR Seattle expo. They may be at RnR Chicago or any of the remaining large summer running events but at this point, we may not see the medals again until the expo at Disneyland!

The first look at the actual medals last year came at Chicago.

I was lucky and got to see them at the RnR San Diego expo a few weeks ago. Now if they would only come out with the Dopey series...and the Glass Slipper Challenge series...

Given the temps this week, perhaps we should call this column HOT Running News...

Death Valley resident Mike Wood says he's used to the heat. But when his running shoes begin to melt, he starts to pay attention.

"The ground temperatures here can approach a hundred degrees so you're talking about pretty much boiling the shoes ... everything that kind of holds the shoe together kind of comes apart," Wood said.

Wood hit the pavement running despite temperatures that hit 128 (53 degrees C) this weekend in Death Valley.

That was the high reported by the National Weather Service on Sunday afternoon. It recorded the same temperature Saturday, after an initial reported reading of 127, according to meteorologist Dan Berc.

Update on Saturday's Pasadena Half Marathon. Just a reminder of the dangers of running in the currently very, very hot conditions on the West Coast. Be safe everyone.

Looks like it's cooling down a little bit (90 for high, 47 for low) before my sister's half on Saturday at Smith Rock, OR. I just hope they didn't oversell the hydration/support they'll have on the course to her. (She asked specifically, because she was going to get a backpack if they didn't have frequent enough places for her to refill)

At least they know it's going to be warm there- race start is 6:15 am! (They call it a Sunrise Start!)

    Oh, she ROCKED it!!!
She switched from walk-only to walk-run (I forget her intervals) and only knocked 22 minutes off her PR - and finished in 2:50!
I couldn't be prouder of her!

Ever wonder what happens to all the cut fresh fruit left-overs after a run is complete. Here's a great article on how the Utica Boilermaker creatively solved their leftover program and helped many four-legged friends in the process.

We've mentioned in previous posts the father/son duo of Dick and Rick Hoyt. Last night they were awarded the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the ESPY Awards. Such an amazing story and inspirational team.

The Jimmy V Award for Perseverance was given to father-and-son duo Dick and Rick Hoyt by actor-director Ben Affleck. The younger Hoyt was born with cerebral palsy and is unable to use his hands and legs. His 73-year-old father Dick pushes him in a custom-made running chair, and together they have participated in more than 1,000 endurance events, including 31 Boston Marathons.

"I don't think you could find two guys more proud to represent the city of Boston," Dick Hoyt said.

His son spoke through computer-generated voice technology, saying, "I can't hardly believe we are here. Thirty-seven years ago nobody would even talk to us...It only proves the wisdom of Jimmy v's words, 'Don't give up, don't ever give up."'

If you are interested in running the NYC Marathon, now may be your year if you would consider signing up for a charity fundraising spot. Some of the charity teams, which are normally sold out by now, are at 50% capacity. Not an expected situation and one that is raising understandable alarm for the charities. Click here to read more about it.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people have turned their focus to fundraising for a Boston Marathon spot.

If you ever wonder how many bodies are stepping up to the start line, take a look at the Record Number of Race Finishers in 2012 report. I think the most telling line is "Since 2000, the number of finishers has increased by 80%, according to the report". Wow...

If you are looking for a summer half or full marathon, Eugene is permanently moving it's annual event from the end of April to the last weekend of July. The move brings the event to more favorable weather (i.e., no PNW rain) as well as now coinciding with the world junior track and field championships. What this may do to the 2014 Eugene Women's Half Marathon which is traditionally held in August will remain to be seen.

If you are like me and are a student of the history of running, the Eugene Marathon/ Half finish on iconic Hayward field is a not to be missed experience!

We've talked in this forum on the effects of heat and running. Even world-class runners are negatively impacted by hot weather as was proven at the recent World Championships when only 46 out of 70 starters in the marathon finished.

Here's a great (to me) article about Mary Decker Slaney. There was a show about her on ESPN yesterday, I hope to be able to catch it in reruns. I wasn't into running then, though I had good friends who were, but I still looked up to her as an awesome athlete with really lousy Olympics luck.
