Scooby... The best way to prepare is to carry ponchos regardless of the forecast. Expect daily showers in the afternoon. They are usually short in duration and dont usually spoil a lot of fun - as long as you are prepared for it.
I would be more concerned about mentally preparing for the heat and humidity that you will encounter, if you have never done an August trip in the past. The first time we did an August trip, it really caught us off guard. It wore us out more than anything else.

The problem, GusMan, is that Scooby HAS done an August trip before, and got soaked by a TS going both directions over the Florida Penninsula. She had HORRIBLE timing last time, especially with an oddly moving Tropical Storm (very few go from the Gulf to the Atlantic and BACK to the Gulf!)
I hate to say this out loud - but TS Ernesto just formed, but hopefully will be all done before your trip, Scoobydooby. They only forecast them 5 days out (and the 5 day out position is REALLY in question - Either the C or D storm was in the Gulf and the 5 day forecast went from Texas to Florida in about a days forecasting time! They literally had the cone do a 180 (and it was pointed to Louisiana for part of that 180, so I was definitely paying attention to it!)) Right now Ernesto's center of his 5 day forecast is hitting the tip of the Yucatan Penninsula, but the cone goes from Cuba to Honduras - so it really depends on the steering mechanisms.
We should have a much better idea for you in about a week (when you're 5 days from landing, basically). But hopefully sooner than that we'll know if Ernesto is going to be a spoiler or potential spoiler for you.
www.nhc.noaa.gov has the up-to-date info. (But I'm sure you already have that bookmarked, Scooby!)
Hang in there. The only thing you CAN do is pack the ponchos! Anything other than that is just energy you may need getting through the last few days of work! And repeat Silvercat's mantra!

Thanks for the clarification, Drince. The post made it sound like the situation was different.
This past June we also endured a tropical storm at WDW. Rained nearly every day we were there. You kinda have to face it with the attitude that it can rain a lot but not let it dampen your spirits. Clothes only hold so much water (can only get so wet) and the lines are usually shorter because people stay at home or hide in hotel rooms. I guess you can say that only the dedicated storm the parks during the storms!
In a case like that, duo-dry or wick-away fabrics are your friend as they dry quickly.
Probably the only real bummer for the trip was that I was not able to take more pictures and video with my good camera due to the rain.

TS Ernesto is expected to pass well south of Florida. It may make it's first big landfall in the Yucatan Peninsula and is expected to pass south of Cuba. So, at this point, you should be good.

Ernesto is not going to be a problem for you - AT ALL. Yucatan Penninsula and Southern Mexico are a different story (and I heard Jamaica got a lot of stormy weather too - and today's their 50th anniversary of independence - PLUS they have some fast people to celebrate!)
And Florence shouldn't be an issue, either. Key words from the forecast discussion this morning "DISSIPATION IS FORECAST IN 4 TO 5 DAYS." (I copied that from the National Hurricane Center discusion - and yes, they yell everything.)

I feel your pain.
In 2008, our trip started with a tropical storm over Orlando and ended with another tropical storm over our home (that we were flying into).
It rained so much that Main Street USA was a river. The water was ankle deep and moving quickly. I don't know how our bus driver could see through the rain, but we made it back to our hotel. We were again met with ankle deep running water and of course our room was in the very back of the resort!
It put a little bit of a damper on our trip, but we just packed the ponchos every day and kept going.
I will hope for some pixie dust to go your way...Less rain and more sunshine...and plenty of "magical" family time together!

And put it this way - you are going to be in FLORIDA and DISNEY WORLD as opposed to dull, cold, rainy and boring Birmingham UK .......... Just relax and enjoy yourselves, the magic will still happen, even if it is a bit squelchy!

Think of it this way... Astro Orbiter and Thunder Mountain become water rides! You wont have to worry about getting wet on Splash Mountain - because you will already be wet. Spin dry on Tea Cups. Also, I hear that riding Kilimanjaro Safaris during the rain, the animals sometimes become more animated.

Scooby your get up and go program in the early am is much to your advantage when traveling this time of year. Often the morning is still clear of rain. Do the must see outdoor rides in the am. The am temps are cooler then the afternoon anyway. Unless there is lightning and thunder the pool will still be open. Your wet anyway so enjoy the pool and slide. If it's not raining in the afternoon you may actually find yourself wishing for a quick shower to cool things off a bit.
Make sure to dress in quick drying clothing and shoes. Wet sneakers and socks bring on nasty blisters and wet clothing rubbing can cause chaffing. Ouch!
We often do an August trip (one child's b-day) and always have a great time. If it does rain non stop don't hang in your room all day. Ask Cast members for advice on what to do. You will be suprised at how much you can see of do in the rain that you might not of thought of.

My obsession has reached new heights. I've found a site that anticipates the amount of rain in .inches! Wish I knew what constituted a lot and what is a daily heavy downpour.
My DH is losing patience with me now.....
Ooh and now my obsession has rewarded me with a site that tells me anticipated hours of rain per day. This I can really obsess on for the next week

Oh at last long range weather watch says we have 3 days of sun when we arrive. It's changing every day but I'll go with that over the 14 days heavy rain it's been tormenting me with! DH asked why I am obsessing in something I can't control. He's not very 'Type A'
Scooby, I hope the weather gods are good to you! Just remember there are a lot of things to do in the rain and like Mily said the early mornings, which I know you get up for, are usually better. Maybe pack extra socks and extra shoes, so you don't have to put wet shoes back on.
One year we went in January and not only did it rain but it was cold and raw, nasty not at all what you expect Florida to be like, we had warm clothes but had only packed the one pair of shoes, big mistake that hasn't happened since, no matter what time of year we go.
