I am trying to figure out where to start as a matter of fact. Most likely we will do one or the other, Tink or P.F. Chang's. NOT BOTH! And we plan on starting small with a few local 5k's or something.

I am not a runner, but I'd like to be.
I'd start now with a Couch to 5K training plan to work on integrating walking/running into your normal routine, and then start building up a base of weekly mileage. Good luck! We're here to help out.

I did today! I walk/jogged at a good pace, 2 miles. It was my first but not my last! I have alot of research to do and I need to find the right shoe for my foot.

What shoe's do you all like/prefer?

Go to a good running shoe store.
    It's worth it!
They should look at your body mechanics and foot size/shape and help you narrow down your selection. And most have super good return policies if you find a fatal flaw in them! I had one pair of shoes that were just horrid on my shins. After one session (outside, though not in the rain) I brought them back and they exchanged them with questions aimed only at finding a better pair!

Also, make sure you have some socks without any cotton.

Planned on the runner's store! Why, why no cotton in my socks?

And by good, she isn't talking about Sports Authority or a New Balance store. Go to a real running store. They'll give you the best running shoe for YOU, not by brand or price. A good pair of shoes make all the difference between running being fun and running being painful.
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

If we're going to get into detailed training/equipment discussions we should start a new thread(s).

I had to cancel on the Howl at the Moon run, it was still almost 100 degrees at 7 PM so I decided to sit inside and drink margaritas instead.

Uh, good call. Heck no would I ever run anything in 100 degree weather unless it was to save my life from a serial killer.

I hope you really enjoy this race. 10k is my favorite distance. It's long enough to feel like I'm getting a really good work out but short enough to know that I can push myself and still have gas in the tank to put it all out there the last mile. It's not like I'm fast, I'm not, but I feel I can really challenge myself for a 10k and still feel great at the end. ENJOY!

I just registered for the Chapman 5K on October 6th. My boot camp does this every year, but it's always the same weekend as the CHOC Walk. This year they are a week apart, so we're doing the 5K on the 6th, and CHOC Walk on the 14th as a team.

Oops, yes. Five weeks after DLR half, a week after MouseAdventure. I have so much travel coming up in the next three months I can't keep any of it straight.

Now that the New Year has started, anyone looking at races in their area to participate in?

    Currently my calendar is:
Runner Den Road Race on Sunday the 3rd of Feb
PVschools Community 5K on Saturday the 9th
Chinese New Year 5K 'Wok' on Sunday the 10th
Lost Dutchmans Mine Marathon (5K) on Sunday the 17th

I have a few spread out in March and April but from May-August I am doing a Road Racers Summer Series. The series is 5-5K's. My last in that series is on August 11th which gives me time to rest a little before the Disneyland Half Inaugural 10K!

The friends I run with are doing one half marathon each month in 2013, but I don't plan to run with them for all of them!

    So far my plan is:

February 24 - Princess Half Marathon (WDW)
May 5 - Long Branch Half Marathon (Long Island, NY)
September 22 - Rochester Half Marathon (Rochester, NY)
December 14 - Hoover Dam Half Marathon (Boulder City, NV)

So far all of the ones I am signing up for are 5, 8 and 10K's. I want to comfortably jog/run a 10K before doing a Half.
My plan for this year is to do 1-3 5K's a month, plus my daily walk/jogs.

I wish there were more 10K races, but it doesn't seem to be that popular of a distance around here and it's not one I'm willing to travel that far for on its own. Good luck with your goal!

Mine's pretty skimpy at this point. I'm going to flesh it out with some more local races in the spring, I think.

Feb 24 - RnR New Orleans.
March 30 - Crescent City Classic 10K (I plan on SHATTERING my 10K PR with this one. I did it last year (my only 10K) and was just at the beginning of training and was NOT prepared for the distance (I bonked pretty good and even tried a jello shot to see if the sugar would help, that's how desperate I was for fuel!) With my pace, I do need fuel for a 10K (and thank goodness I had my nuun with me, because they supply water only on the race course!)
May 19 - RnR Portland. I'll actually have family on the sidelines for this, so I'm especially happy! And two sisters (maybe all three) are doing the Cancer Walk 5K the day before, so I'll be cheering for them, if I don't decide to join them - and then we'll hit the expo together (or before)
July 4th - MAYBE - Ridgefield (WA) 5K. Described as 'rolling country roads' and they mean it. Depends on if my sister/nephew want to join again, I think.
End of Oct - Jazz Half (local)
Depending on how things go in the spring:
    January 2014 - Mickey full

    Cathy
