Probably due to lower crowds? Jan and Feb are kinda the off season. Personally two hours is plenty and we have never stayed for 3 in all our trips. We were so tired the night we did EMH at MK, we only stayed an hour but then waited almost 40 mins for the boat back to the Transportation Center.
Have a Disney Day!
You don't have to walk on water, it's how you walk on land.
It's one of those funny things. The best thing about the 3 hour EMH was that there was practically no one in the parks for that last hour or so, and you could get all kinds of things done. But it's awfully hard for Disney to justify keeping the parks open if there is practically no one there. This doesn't affect me at all, as I don't usually do the evening EMH. Come 9 or 10pm and this ol' dog is ready for bed!
When this news came out a couple days ago, there was a lot of mixed reaction. Some people were really upset that this could be another cost-cutting technique while at the same time, prices went up. Some were understanding since the really late night EMH's were like a ghost town during the last hour or so anyway. Some CM's that chimed in were actually somewhat relieved.
Me? Well, I love walking the park during that last hour, especially as closing time approaches. There is something real peaceful about walking down Main Street with barely anyone around. But with the very thin crowds during the last hour, especially if we are talking about the hours after midnight, you can almost understand why they would choose to cut the perk down a bit.
Personally, I would rather see them take that hour and add it to the morning EMH so that resort guests can get in extra early - especially in the summer hours.

I'm surprised at the "ghost town" comments because in MK in September it didn't feel empty even that last hour. Maybe because it wasn't as late as 2am EMHs?
GusMan, you can probably appreciate why I love being in Epcot after closing, walking around the World Showcase. After the masses clear out you pretty much have the place to yourself, which is an incredibly cool vibe. In fact, I DON'T like the evening EMH at Epcot, as there are lots of other folks invading MY park in the evening hours!!!
3P1P - Going along the same lines, I think the ghost town comments are more geared towards those really late nights where a park is opened real late. If you think about it, having a park open till midnight is really not all -that- late, especially when the park in question may close at 9 normally. By then, people do tend to migrate from other parks to the EMH park, trying to get in a few things with the hopes of lighter crowds - which they may or may not find.
Admittedly, staying out till 2 or 3 AM is tough. Getting up the next morning is even tougher.

I remember about 6 or 7 years ago we were at MK in Feb, we were staying late for EMH.. it seems like the EMH hours were 10-1am. Around midnight, the twins (2) were asleep in their strollers, my oldest (6) was asleep in his stroller.. My wife is like; "What do you want to do NEXT?"
She has changed her approach little since then, she still takes what you give her so for me, the less EMH the better!
I was quite surprised to read about the changes in Mark's update this week, but I suppose it could make sense. Evening EMHs were getting progressively busier (IMHO) and I'm getting older and anything after midnight is tough. So it won't really change MY touring much, but my 17 yo son will be crushed. That was his favorite time!
Working hard for that next WDW trip! December 2013
I know there is ongoing debate about "do EMH/don't do" parks on their EMH days.
Does anyone has experience with Jan/Feb and EMH? This will affect our trip and we had strategized to do MK on Sunday, AK on Monday, EP on Tuesday. Does the slower times of year make a big difference in EMH or not really ?

I think it only makes a difference if you MUST hit the main headliners with a minimal line. ie: Soarin, TSMM, Test Track, any of the Mountains, EE, and Kilimanjaro Safari. (Just to name a few.) A person's mileage may vary on this one, but usually its a good idea to hit the biggies then enjoy a relaxing day doing other attractions.

Also, even though the number of guests is smaller, the number of CMs working is smaller too - and they'll often have only one load platform going when there are two -- so it doesn't necessarily make the lines go faster, even though there are fewer people in the queue!

Very good point, Drince.
Additionally, some attractions that might usually have FP available, may not have it active just because it may not be necessary due to smaller crowds and shorter lines.

Is TSM likely to always have it's FP? I read recently elsewhere that WDW disables the FPs on some things but I can't seem to find a list of what attractions have FP disabled.
I think honestly we can probably skip TSM and Soarin since those are virtually identical to their DRL counterparts that we've done many times but it's be nice to know ahead of time which attractions will/won't have FPs. At the very least is that info in the daily/weekly brochure and/or are there any apps that show if FP is in use for attractions (like touring plans, etc)?

TSM is one of those attractions where not only is FP active pretty much all the time, but FP's quickly run out.

The queue, at TSM is quite a bit different, at WDW. And quite a bit better, even if you leave out Mr. P (who's in the standby queue only). You can get a sense of the overall standby queue when you use FP, if you don't go super fast to the 'merge point' (which isn't always operated as a merge point, in the true sense of the word).
Attractions I've seen where they didn't have FP operating all the time (off the top of my head) are Winnie the Pooh and Mickey's Philharmagic, It's Tough to be a Bug. Maybe Mission:Space? and Kali River Rapids? (If it's cool enough for Kali to not need FP, I'm generally not riding it!) I don't believe they advertise it on the Times Guide - but they DO have restaurants and shops that aren't operated with the park opening/closing listed, which is one thing I find frustrating with the DL Times Guide.
