Can it be done? Staying at WDW but not planning to do the parks!

    Pre-Trip Report:

    Cast of Characters:

Me---Mom who would spend every vacation at WDW!
DH---Dad who keeps telling mom there are just as nice places to go on vacation
DS (15)---Starting to understand why mom loves all the "details" of WDW
DD1 (12)---Loves all trips as long as shopping is involved
DD2 (6)---Just as crazy for WDW as mom

We are planning a central Florida trip for our summer vacation this year. Our plan is NOT to do any of the WDW parks. Crazy, right? People say I can't even be in FL and not go see Mickey. That pretty much is true...so I don't know how I am going to pull this one off. For the last 11 years, every time I have been in FL, I made it seem rational to go to WDW. Here are some of the "excuses" I have used..."We are only an hour and a half away"...."This is the last year DS2 will be free"...."We will be there on your (DH's) birthday and you can get in free"..."Free Dining"...You get the picture. Well maybe that is why I have Disney dining reservations. We are actually staying in a WDW resort for part of the trip and staying at another resort that is "technically" RIGHT THERE!

So our trip will definitely be sprinkled with pixie dust! The kids will be hanging out with their aunt and uncle for a couple of days while DH and I hang out at the AKL! We got the 30% off pin code for a room only. (There is my excuse...look at what an awesome pin code we have...how could we not go? ) The AKL had the best rate for a deluxe. I wanted somewhere with a jacuzzi. When the kids are with us, we don't get to "totally" relax in the hot tub. We also have reservations one night for the California Grill and breakfast at Boma.

Towards the end of our trip, we all will be staying at the Wyndham Grand Resort Bonnet Creek. The only time we have stayed in the Orlando area has been on-site at WDW. I have heard you have to drive under the "Walt Disney World" sign to get to the resort. We are going to have to have some major distraction going on with DD2. I am not sure how it is going to go over with her about not going to WDW, if she knows we are "technically" there. Our saving grace is my niece will start working there in September and we keep saying we are waiting to go to WDW when she is there. While at Bonnet Creek, we have no definite plans. We have tossed around going to Disney Quest...anyone's thoughts on this? Did you like it? Was it worth it? I have reservations at Raglan Road for our last night there. I have heard that is a fun place to go.

To some people I am going to sound crazy when I say this and to others they will totally get it...so here goes: I really get into the planning of a WDW trip. I like scheduling the meals and thinking about which day we are going to which park and making a schedule for when we will be enjoying certain attractions/shows. I am not a drill sergeant about our schedule. I don't completely lose it, if the schedule gets off...well, there was that one time when I made the kids leave Stromalong Bay to go to MK because after all we can swim anywhere! Hey, I redeemed myself last time we were there, when I let DS2 play with the mulch under the only shade tree in HS for like an hour and I just took in all the details of where we were.

So there you have it...WDW geek mom attempting a "park-less" trip to the WDW area. Can it be done? We will see!

Side note: I did catch DH looking at satellite pics for all the parks. He was uploading directions to our resort to his phone and for some reason he started looking at the satellite images of MK, HS, EP, and AK....maybe he will be the one who can't be that close and not be drawn in...

    Scooby,
We will probably hit the beach some when we are at my SIL's house...What is funny is we are still packing our Disney shirts...I think we are all in denial!

You don't have much longer and you will be strolling down Main Street USA! I can't wait to hear all about your trip when you get back!

I am excited to hear about your stay at Bonnet Creek, since we will be staying there in December. It looks like there is alot of activities at the hotel to keep busy without going to the parks. Of course I am all about going to the parks, but my wife wants to go to the lazy river and play minature golf.

I don't know and I don't care if It's a Small World. It's a nice day when you wake up in Disneyland.

You will be very.close to the parks.

I stayed at the Bonnet Creek Waldorf Astoria and not only do they and their sister Hilton property have Epcot views, the fireworks actually woke me up!

One of the water parks is right around the corner (can't remember which one) and DTD isn't far if you need a little more magic. Raglan Road is a GREAT choice; one of our favorites.

Have a good time, no matter what.

I would be interested in finding out about the shuttle to the resorts from Bonnet Creek. If you could post the info on the schedule, I would appreciate it. I would like to drive into the parks each day, but my wife wants to take the shuttle.

The Hilton and Waldorf Astoria run shuttles on the half hour during peak times and on the hours at other times. They looked nice to me (I had a rental already and only visited one park for one day). I know I talked to some folks who compared their Hilton stay very favorably to the Beach Club (very different properties, but both nice and both with a lazy river). I also read some reviews where regular visitors compared the shuttle time ended up being about what you could expect at some of the values and moderates. Those places would have more frequent buses but more stops. They are both doable but you have to plan for travel time.

I read a LOT of review for those properties and don't recall reading anything negative regarding the shuttles.

I will let you know what I find out. We are planning a big WDW trip next year with some friends, and we will need some space. I really enjoy staying on-site, but I think for the price and location Bonnet Creek just might be the place for us for now. I will check out the shuttle bus schedule, but remember I am "not planning" on going to any of the parks! So I might not be able to report exactly how "timely" they are.

Thanks! We definitely will be going to DTD not only to eat, but shop! I am surprising everyone with our reservations at Raglan Road. We haven't eaten there before, but it looks like a lot of fun.

I just returned tonight from Wyndham Bonnet Creek from a 4 night stay. This was our 3rd stay here and if they would let me move in I would. We stayed in 2bed/2bath. Perfect bled of on but off site if you ask me. It's as close to staying on site as your going to get, both in location and experince, without onsite prices. I'm not sure what your paying but we paid less then what we pay with a passholder discount for a Disney Mod resort and honestly this, in my opinion, is more like staying in a deluxe DVC resort.

The only somewhat small catch is it is a time share so they do send you to the "other desk" to pick up your parking pass where they try to give you the whole song & dance about the time share presentation. I was firm and said no and they left us alone. 3 min of my time tops. I have been told if you mark the form that you are in the lowest income range they won't bug you about this. I don't know if it's true. I just gave them a very firm no way buddy and I had my parking pass and was on my way.

The resort is wonderful. My 3 children ages 14, 13 and 8 could live at the pool. There is a huge pirate ship, with slide, water cannons to spay eachother and a great pool side bar and grill. We spent a whole day just hanging out at the pool and we did have AP's so we could have gone to the parks.

We have a booking for early Dec here as well.

I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did.

Thanks, Mily. I am so glad to know you have had such great stays at this resort. We will be in the hotel this time around, but next year we would need a condo. I am curious to see if they try the "other desk" trick on us since we are not actually staying in the time share part. I have been a total die-hard stay on-site kinda gal, but as my kids get older and we need more space I think there are just too many options off-site not to give them a try. I am so hoping Bonnet Creek lives up to my expectations! Thanks again!

Day One July 25, 2012 Smooth Flying!

We had an early morning flight to Orlando. The flight is only 1.5 hours long. DD2 loved the flight! This is her second airplane ride and she doesn't remember the first one so everything was great! She loved looking out the window at the clouds, the little tray that holds her drink (apple juice) and the little peanuts. She even loved the little bathroom in the back of the plane! She was so disappointed when the we landed! During the flight I chatted with a dad and two kids who were headed to WDW. I, of course, had to ask where they were staying and had they ever been before. It was their 2nd trip and they were on a mission to find Phinneas and Ferb. They were staying at the Pop Century resort. My husband teased me when we got off the plane. He said for a minute that he was worried I would depart with my "new" Disney family that I had met on the plane! We rented a full-size car from Dollar so we made our way to the "monorail" that takes you over to the other terminal. Our luggage was coming out as we walked up so we grabbed our suitcases and headed to the Dollar car rental desk. Immediately, DD1 said don't look mom I see the Disney Magical Express buses. Sure enough, people were loading the buses and heading to see Mickey! I felt a little sad that we weren't loading on one of those buses, but I was looking forward to DH and I spending two nights at the AKL and I knew I would get my Disney fix tomorrow!

We were loaded in our rental car and headed to my SIL's house by 11:00 am. Easy trip to her house and we just hung out by the pool that night. I went to bed smiling thinking I will be sleeping at WDW tomorrow night!

We were really pleased with the look of the resort. We stayed on the executive level 12th floor room 1240. Our view from our room was of Pop Century and Art of Animation. We had access to the Executive Lounge where we watched Illuminations each night. You could also see Hollywood Studios (Tower of Terror and Mickey's Hat).

The hotel's pool is lagoon-style. It is zero-entry. The pirate pool with an enclosed slide is just a few steps away. To check out the equipment for putt-putt, you walk into the double doors to this tower right by the pirate pool. We played putt-putt one night...cute course. While we were there, there was karoke going on at the nearest pool. The older kids walked over to the lazy river, but I never made it over there.

The family restaurant was very good. A little pricey... We ate there two nights. They bring yummy croissants out as an appetizer. We had the spinach artichoke dip one night. It was yummy! They had a special one night of a steak with shrimp. It was yummy as well. The staff here was really friendly.

When you check in, they will direct you to another podium where they say you have a "welcome gift." This is where they try to get you to attend a presentation about their time shares. I went over to just see what they would offer me. They try to ask you questions as to what you are there for and then they try to match you up with a "deal." According to my calculations they would have given us the equivalent of a one-day WDW park ticket for our 6 year old. We did not go to their presentation.

The night we played putt-putt we noticed a lot of people upset having to wait their turn on the grills.

I think I kept the shuttle schedule they gave me. I will see if I can post it. We did not use the shuttle so I can't comment on whether it is timely or not.

Day Two Thursday, July 26, 2012

    Jambo! Welcome Home!

We had a zoo trip planned for today with the kids before we were supposed to leave for the AKL, but we got a little distracted in the morning. We started the day debating whether we should go to a Marlins game on Sunday. After much debate, we decided to leave our brother-in-law in charge of ordering us tickets for the game against the Padres.

So I knew if we didn’t get to the zoo soon, we would melt! So here I was urging everyone to get to the zoo because I had only their welfare on my mind. It had nothing at all to do with my room waiting on the savanna! We finally got to the Brevard Zoo at 11:00 am. It was soooo hot! By 1:00 we are done with the heat and we head to the car. The kids left with my SIL and niece, and DH and I program the GPS to take us to the AKL! Woo Hoo!

While I checked in, DH parked the car and brought in our one suitcase. I had requested a king sized bed standard room and our request was granted. The CM that checked us in was named Sasha and she was great. She said that even though our room wasn’t “technically” a savanna view room, we still would be able to view the animals. Our room was near a gate. We were in room 2234 on the Kudu Trail, Sunset Savanna. Our room really was great! Throughout our stay, we saw tons of animals. Directly in front of our room was a corral of some sort with a gate. Still we had a great view of the animals and one night the giraffes slept right by our room.

After check-in, we ate supper in the Mara CS restaurant. We shared a roasted veggie flat bread and chicken Caesar salad. We also bought two refillable mugs. Everything was yummy! After supper, we explored the resort. We just walked around the animal viewing areas. At one the CM looked so bored. We felt sorry for him all alone on the savanna so we asked him some questions about the animals. He told us a lot of interesting facts about the animals. We also checked out the pool area, lobby and gift shop. We also paused to enjoy the yummy aromas coming from Boma.

We made our way to the bus stop. The first bus to come was Hollywood Studios so we took it. We only had to wait 5 minutes for the bus. As soon as we got off the bus, there was a boat loading for the resorts/Epcot so we loaded and headed our way to the Boardwalk. Total pixie dust on the transportation so far!

We got off at the Boardwalk resort. My goal was to dance with DH at Atlantic Dance Hall, but it didn’t open for another 30 minutes so we walked over to the Beach Club. I was on a magnet mission. I was hoping to get a magnet from each of the resorts we have stayed at. They had one so I purchased it and we headed back over to Atlantic Dance Hall. There were still a few minutes left before it opened so we sat on a bench by the water and chatted with someone who had her tripod and camera set up to take pictures of the fireworks. She said she had never tried it before so she hoped she could get some good shots. The Boardwalk area was crowded and families were riding those surrey bikes. I felt they were irritating to the pedestrians and how much more irritating it would be to try to drive them through all those people. I think it would be more enjoyable to rent one at one of the Port Orleans resorts…I am just saying.

So back to my mission: dance with DH. We haven’t been dancing in a long time. We watched a little of Illuminations and then we proceeded to go into the dance hall. Okay, it is like 9:10 pm on a Thursday night. There are maybe 4 other people in there and no one is dancing! We grab a table by the windows and order two drinks and watch the end of Illuminations. We drink another round of drinks and by that time a total of three more people come in: two guys and a girl. She forces the guys out onto the dance floor. DH and I wait for the next song to start and we go out onto the floor. All I can say is our new song is, “You Dropped the Bomb on Me, Baby!” It was silly and we had fun. This is one place at WDW where I would want to come back to when there was more of a crowd. I am not sure if DH and I would be able to stay up that late, but it would be fun to try!

We took the Downtown Disney bus from the Boardwalk and then we transferred to the AKL bus. No wait on the buses…more transportation pixie dust!

Looked for some animals before going to bed. I am pretty sure I drifted off to sleep with a smile on my face!

Thoughts about today: I love the AKL! I am sure the kids would too! The resort seemed so relaxed. It was great just walking around WDW with DH with no strict agenda to follow. We really got to experience the atmosphere at each resort we visited. I miss the kids, but it is nice to have some “couple” time.

Day Two: July 27th Dining with a View

We slept until we woke up! You say, of course you did! I just mean we didnt have to get up because someone else woke us up. One of the perks of being here without the kids, sleeping as late as you want. We ate breakfast at Mara. DH had the Bounty Breakfast platter, and I had the African-inspired Breakfast platter. CM forgot DHs Mickey waffle. Of yeah, we are going back for that. Mara a little bit crowded this morning, but the lines moved quickly. Everything was yummy!

Now we were ready for my magnet mission. I thought it would be fun to go to all the resorts we have stayed in and buy a magnet. We got the Beach Club one last night. We took a bus to Downtown Disney and then a boat to the Port Orleans resorts. We have stayed at both of them, but since the 2nd stop was Riverside, we decided to stay on the boat and get off there. Then we were going to walk over to French Quarter. We went straight to the gift shop and were told the only resort-specific merchandise they had were pins and key chains. Well, that is not what I wanted, so we left. We decided not to go to the French Quarter so we hopped on an Animal Kingdom bus. When we exited the bus, we turned right to go to the AKL bus stop. If you were going into the park, you were supposed to go left. A friendly CM, tried to direct me to go right and I politely said we were needed to go the other way. He tried to politely get me to go left about three times, until he gave up.

It was about 3:00 pm when we got back to our room. I was hoping for a nap before our 5:45 reservations at California Grill. No such luck. The maid was making her way to our room so when she knocked on our door, we went down to the pool bar. I had a very yummy Pina Colava. The bees were bad there, and the bartenders were catching them in small plastic cups. They would trap them under the cup and leave them. There were about four trapped near my seat. The pool was crowded. I did see people being nice and sharing some of the chairs they had saved that no one was really using. That is what I like about staying at a Disney resort. It just seems like more people are willing to talk and be sociable and help other families out. Dont get me wrong. I have seen some really ugly behavior by people at WDW, but for the most part, the encounters I have had with people are positive.

We went back to the room and changed into clothing that followed the California Grill dress code suggestions. I have never gotten to dress up while at WDW so it was a treat for me. I wore a dress and some nice sandals (ones that I could never wear on a park storming day). DH wore a nice shirt and khakis. We left on a MK bus at 4:45 pm. We had a really great bus driver. He talked excitedly the whole way about the MK. MK had extra magic hours until 2:00 am that night and he was definitely trying to get everyone excited about it. He also pointed out things you could see from the bus. I thought it was a nice touch. We talked to another kid-less couple who agreed with us that it would be a stretch to stay up until 2:00 am!

We got off the bus and headed straight to the monorail. We met up with the couple we had been talking to on the bus. They were headed to Ohana. We swapped stories about some of the different WDW restaurants we have tried. The first stop was the Contemporary. Check-in for the California Grill is on the second floor. They gave us a pager and told us to wait by the elevator and someone would take us up to the 15th floor.

We were immediately taken up to the 15th floor. There were three parties on the elevator with us. The other two parties pagers went off on the elevator. Ours did not. When we got to the 15th floor, they directed us to the hostess to be seated. DH and I didnt know if we were supposed to go since our pager hadnt lit up. As everyone was getting situated, our pager lit up. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant. There was a large group made up of adults seated by us and a mom and dad with two small girls. There also was a dad and two tween children. I noticed that without the kids, I get to do more people watching. It is interesting to watch someone elses family dynamics. The couple with the two small girls, didnt mind that they jumped on the seats and messed up clean tables that were set. They never got loud, but they sure were all over the place.

I really like Reisling wines so our server Becky let us try the different kinds they had available. I chose the one from Germany (the sweetest). DH chose the one from Washington state. It was a little drier. DH and I both ordered the tomato salad. I thought it was good. It was light and refreshing. DH said it was okay. He wished it had a stronger flavor. For my main dish, I chose the pork tenderloin. DH chose the red snapper. We both enjoyed our entrees. I loved the creaminess of the polenta. We both had happy plates! We didnt leave anything on our plates. We didnt even have room for a dessert.

After we were finished, we ventured out onto the observation decks. The views of MK were spectacular. DH waited for the perfect picture of two monorails coming toward each other. We took tons of pics. It was really bright up there. In all our pics we are squinting! We also could see the new construction going on in Fantasyland. It was a definitely a great view! On the other side, we saw Spaceship Earth, Expedition Everest, and the Mickey water tower in HS. We had been told numerous times that we could come back for the MK fireworks. We would just have to show our receipt to get access to the 15th floor. I thought it sounded like fun, but DH really wasnt into coming back.

We made our way back downstairs and checked out the gift shops. We also looked over the rail at Chef Mickeys and watched Minnie work her magic. We noticed that the elevators were really slow and the resort just had a crowded feel. We commented on how nice the feel of the AKL compared to the Contemporary. It still would be cool to stay there because of all the history and the monorail!

We took the monorail to the Polynesian. I so want to stay at this resort! We have eaten at Ohana before, but we have never explored the resort. So we strolled through the gift shop and found our way to the volcano pool. We walked out to the beach area and found an empty hammock. I took a lot of pictures. It was about 8:50 pm, and I thought we would be able to lay in our hammock and watch the electrical water pageant. Wrong! Really scary lightning and rain started. I was really surprised how long it took the lifeguards to tell people to get out of the pool.
We made our way to the bus stop, but not before I had my picture made with one of those cute little tiki torches. We caught a HS bus. We were two out of five people on the bus. By the time we got to HS, it was only 40 minutes until they closed. We got right on a waiting AKL bus.

When we made it back to the room, we turned on the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics. We had planned on going to the hot tub, but I kinda of fell asleep on DHs shoulder. Okay, I more than kinda fell asleepI fell asleep hard. DH had to wake me up to tell me to go to bed!

Thoughts about today:I am glad we tried the California Grill. It was super yummy and the view! After spending some time at the Conemporary and the Polynesian, I really really would like to stay at the Poly! I was disappointed that my magnet mission was not completed. I loved hearing the MK music on the bus there and at the turnstiles. The Pina Colava at the AKL pool is awesome on a hot day! I think it is kind of sad that I am enjoying sleeping/napping so much! Even though we haven't stepped a foot in the parks, the magic is still there!

I really like your thought of the day...the last sentence is my favorite!

You know, it takes a lot of willpower not to go to the parks, but honestly, there is so much to do at WDW. The parks are not the only thing to enjoy there. We used to storm the parks like crazy, now we take a more relaxed approach and try to enjoy all the little things Disney has to offer that are overlooked.

Oops! I didn't number my days correctly! I am on the right day now!

Day Four: July 28th My Hubby is the Sweetest!

We woke up when we woke up! Yay! So sad that little envelope was hanging on our door knob. We got our stuff together and took our suitcase to the car. We made our way to Mara and ordered exactly what we had yesterday: one Breakfast Bounty platter and African-inspired Breakfast platter. After a very tasty breakfast, we went to the gift shop to buy my AKL magnet. There weren’t any on the table with the rest of the AKL merchandise. CM said he would get me one from the back. We waited and waited and waited…I almost asked another CM…I thought maybe he forgot about my request…but right when I made my way to ask another CM for help, he came back and said they were all out and I could call the resort merchandise phone number and tell them what I wanted. He said they would send me the magnet without shipping charges. I was disappointed, but took down the number. (I called the number later in the day, and they were all out too. They are on order. The CM said to call back in about a month.)

We refilled our mugs one last time and headed to the parking lot. This is where I decided I have the sweetest hubby. This whole “kid-less” trip had been planned by me. He had gone along with me on my magnet mission, California Grill, Atlantic Dance Hall, and basically just agreeing to go with me to WDW for our couple trip. This is where he said is there anywhere else, I would like to go before we go back to SIL’s house. I said well you know we have never been to one of the Disney outlets in Orlando. With a roll of his eyes, he told me to find the address and he would put in the GPS.

We ended up going to the outlets on Vineland Dr. They were the closest to AKL. We headed straight to the Disney Character Warehouse. The outlets were super crowded. It took us forever to find a parking place. They had some great deals in the store. I found a WDW coloring book for DD2 for $0.99. I bought myself a DCL shirt for our cruise we are going on next year ($11.99). I also found a pirate shirt ($9.99) for DS that he could use on the pirate night on the ship. I bought my SIL a fanny pack that had the Disney Dream on it ($8.99). I also bought myself a postcard of Minnie and another one of Mickey to use in my classroom on a bulletin board. I wanted to buy us some really nice rain jackets that said Dream on the back, but DH talked me out of them. They didn’t have a hood and he said what was the point. They were only $9.99. I finally pulled myself out of the store. DH was starting to feel ill. We left and headed back to my SIL’s house. We made it there with no problem. I am not sure how excited the kids were to see us. They had been bowling, staying up late, buying toys, making crafts, playing video games all day, and eating anything they wanted! My SIL does a great job of spoiling them.

That night my other SIL and BIL came up and we had a great visit. We grilled out chilled by the pool.

Thoughts about today: I really liked staying at the AKL! On our next week-long WDW trip, I think if we stayed there, I really would be able to take that mid-day break that everyone recommends. I like that there is a CS restaurant at the resort. The only other deluxe we have stayed at is the Beach Club and it just doesn’t have the convenience of a CS right there. I liked the Character Warehouse. There are some definite deals. I missed the kids, but enjoyed being with just the hubby! I am disappointed we never made it to the hot tub!

    Thanks for the comment!
It was fun doing some things that we hadn't ever gotten around to doing: eating at a signature restaurant, resort hopping , going to the outlet, and chillin' at the resort.

Stay tuned as to what happened to my willpower, when we took the kids to Bonnet Creek....

Day Five: July 29th Go Fish!

Today we got up and grabbed a quick breakfast and we all headed to Miami to see the Marlins play the Padres. What a way to watch baseball! They have a new stadium with a retractable roof. Can you say AIR CONDITIONING? Wow! The game started at 1:10 in the afternoon. We watched the entire game in comfort! No heat...no sun...no need to put on sunscreen... awesome! We sat down the 1st base line...DH promised he would save us all if there was a foul ball. There were many foul balls, but only one actually came our way. The game went into extra innings! I am happy to say the Marlins won in the bottom of the tenth.

On the way back, we drove into Ft. Lauderdale and up Highway 1. We thought we might eat somewhere near the water, but it was really crowded. What do these people think? It is like seven o'clock on a Sunday night...why are there so many people here? We gave up on that plan and got back on I-95. We ended up eating at the Ale House in Boynton Beach. We made it back to SIL's house and the kids were looking forward to going to the resort the next day. Side note: DH was feeling worse as the day went on. He thought he had some kind of sinus infection.

Thoughts on today:After experiencing the Marlins new stadium, I don't think I can ever go back to watching baseball in the "elements."
I am looking forward to seeing our resort tomorrow (The Grand Wyndham Resort at Bonnet Creek). I hope DH feels better tomorrow.

Day Six: July 30th Being Sick on Vacation Stinks!

We were a slow go today. DH is really feeling bad. It is something respiratory. Of course, he didn't want to go to a doctor. He was coughing and had sinus pressure. He is now taking Daquil/Nyquil. I get everything packed and ready to go. The kids are begging my SIL to go with us. We end up getting on the road around 1:00 pm. We stop and eat, and get to the resort around 3:30 pm. We are staying at the Wyndham Grand Resort at Bonnet Creek. The GPS takes us under the big purple WDW sign. DD2 is a total WDW geek like her mother so I am not sure how she is going to feel about seeing the sign and knowing we are not going to any of the parks. We had prepped her before we came about how our resort was on Disney, but we were going to do other things while we were there. When she saw the sign, her eyes lit up and she actually squealed with the delight. We just talked about how we would see a lot of Disney things, but we probably wouldn't ride any rides. She was fine, and we continued to look for our resort. We got there around 3:30 pm. DH was on automatic pilot. He felt terrible. Once we got there, he went and sat down in the lobby while I checked us in. Check-in went smooth, but our room wasn't ready. She told us we could give our stuff to one of the valets and they would keep it until our room was ready. She took down my cell phone to call when the room was ready. We could also park in the parking garage and just push the blue button to get a parking ticket, but then just throw it away when we got our room key. There is a parking fee of $13 a day. You use your room key to get in and out of the parking garage. We opted to park the car and keep our stuff in there until the room was ready. We got the car settled and then came back in to look around the resort. DH decided to sit on a outside balcony overlooking the pool. He just wanted to crash in the bed. The kids and I looked around a bit. The pool at the hotel was beautiful. The rest of the resort is made up of timeshare condos. They call them towers. The tower to the right of the hotel has the pirate-themed pool. It has an enclosed water slide. It is literally only steps away from our hotel. The resort has a small "lake" in the center. If you continue to go right (around the lake), you come to the tower that has the lazy river. Keep going and you come to the tower that has the putt-putt course. Each tower has some kind of water feature. There are also ping pong tables and pool tables. The kids and I made it back to DH and sat on the balcony with him. They called us to say our room was ready right at 4:00 pm. We were on the 12th floor. You have to use your room key to get to this floor. It gives you access to a lounge where you can watch Illuminations. It was only $8 more a night so I got it. Since DS has been little, he was always intrigued by why some people have to use their room key to get to the room so I did this for him as a special treat. Our room was huge! It had a separate alcove (not big enough to call a room) with a set of bunk beds and a flat screen TV. The main room had 2 queen beds. We also had a small fridge and a good size security box. There was one sink in the bathroom and one out in the room by the fridge. It was really nice. I didn't like the fact that we didn't have a balcony. Our view below was of the heating/cooling system. Our view straight across was of the Hilton and Waldorf Astoria across the street, and our view off in the distance was of Pop Century and Art of Animation resorts. We could clearly see the bowling pins at Pop.

As soon as we got back to the room, DH crashed on the bed. I think he had a fever. He got under all the covers and went to sleep. The kids and I unloaded the car and headed off to get something to eat. We ate at the family restaurant located downstairs. Our server was nice, but it felt forced for him so it was a little awkward. DD1 said he is a little creepy. We had flat breads and salads. DD2 had a kids pizza. It was a little pricey, but with DH not feeling well it was easiest on me. We went back to the room and changed into our bathing suits. DH decided he would try to get up and go sit by the pool. We started out in our pool. DS got restless and wanted to go see the other pools. DD1 wouldn't go with him unless I went and DD1 didn't want to go anywhere. We convinced her to go check out the pirate pool after much coaxing. The pirate pool was much more crowded than our pool. DS went down the slide a couple of times. I didn't go down it because it was enclosed. DD2 didn't want to go down it either. DS finally talked DD1 into exploring the other water areas. I think they made it as far as the lazy river and then they came back. We left the pool a little before nine because I wanted to watch Illuminations from the lounge. The lounge had a large balcony where we sat and watched the fireworks. The lounge consisted of couches and chairs, two flat screen TVs and a computer station with a printer. In the middle of the room was a table that had ice water and fresh fruit.

After the fireworks we headed back to the room and watched the Olympics and went to sleep.

Thoughts on today: I hate that DH is sick. The Bonnet Creek resort is beautiful inside and out. I would stay here on a "real" Disney vacation. However if I stay here again, I would want a room with its own balcony overlooking the pool...that way you can watch Illuminations from your room.

A side note about the whole "time share" component at the Wyndham Grand Resort at Bonnet Creek:

When we checked in, she gave me a "coupon" and directed me to another desk across the lobby. She said they had a "welcome" gift for us for staying at the resort. I suspected this was where they tried to get you to attend one of the time share presentations. Before our room was ready, I left the kids with DH on the balcony and went to see what our "welcome gift" was. There are two people at the desk. One trying to get you attend a timeshare presentation and one who was selling attraction tickets. When I walked up she was talking to a gentleman who didn't speak very good English. She was trying to get him to understand what the timeshare presentation was. He kept saying so they will take us to the parks when we get done and she kept trying to correct him. Finally, she said just take it back to your wife and see if it is something you want to do and she gave him some paper work. I gave her my coupon (that looks very Disney by the way). She asked me what we were in the Orlando area for...visiting the attractions, relaxing, water sports, dining, etc. I told her we were just there to relax. She wanted to know if we would be interested in going to the Arabian Nights restaurant. I said no, if anything it would be WDW we would be interested in going to for a day. She did some calculations and said if we went to their presentation we could get one-day Disney tickets for all of us for only $400. She did not know she was talking to an obsessive WDW planner. I even plan trips I know we probably won't go on. (I know I need help! ) Basically, she was giving me DD2's ticket for free. I told her I would have to check with DH because he was sick and I was not sure if he would feel like sitting through a presentation. She was really nice and gave me directions to the nearest Wal-Mart so I could avoid Hwy 192 (the traffic was terrible on it when we came in). She did seem a little pushy for me to sign up for the presentation. She kept telling me I should do because the slots fill up fast. I knew DH would not be interested in sitting through the presentation. I told him what she said. We weren't interested.

Day Seven: July 31st Downtown Disney here we come!

On our usual WDW trips, we have always left Downtown Disney visits to the end of the trip. This is probably not the best plan. We are “done” by then and it never turns out pleasant. Before heading to Downtown Disney, we stopped at the McDonald’s near the All-Star resorts around 11:00 am. Too late for breakfast so we ordered some sandwiches. We were not impressed. We thought they would be a lot more efficient, since they are used to lots of patrons, but they were not. Not much excitement, it was just like any other McDonald’s.

We headed on over to Downtown Disney. We parked on the West Side and proceeded to stroll. DD2 was quite the shopper. She wanted to look in every store at EVERYTHING! This was not going over well with the rest of the family. The rest of us are under the mindset: “we came, we saw, let’s move on.” We decided they really need to do something with Pleasure Island. It is such a “ghost town” in the middle of the complex. We finally made it to the huge World of Disney store. This is where DD2 put her shopping skills into high gear. If we would tried to skip a section, like let’s say the “Mens Dept,” she would say oh no, we haven’t been in the part yet. She really wanted to look and feel everything! She ended up picking out a plush baby Boo. DD1 picked out a Buzz Lightyear shirt. DS didn’t want anything. We walked all the way down to the Design-A-Tee store. Right when we got there, it started pouring rain. Since we were not planning on going to the parks, I did not pack our ponchos so we were held captive in the store. We played around and designed some shirts for our upcoming cruise, but we didn’t actually buy anything.

Once the rain let up, we made our way back to the car. On the way, someone said he/she was hungry. We decided to give Cookes of Dublin a try. DH ordered fish and chips. DD1 and DS ordered a fish and chips to share. I ordered a kids’ shrimp and chips. DD2 didn’t want anything to eat. She did want something to drink so we ordered her an apple juice. She sat on one of the large windowsills. She ate a few fries, made a pillow out of DD1’s back pack and curled up with her new baby Boo and fell asleep. We thought the food was okay. We probably won’t eat there again. We did a some people watching through our big window so DD2 could get in her little cat nap and then we headed back to the resort.

We went back to the room and watched some of the Olympics. We decided to try the putt-putt course. We went over to the tower to our right of ours to check out the equipment. We had fun playing putt-putt. It is a nicely done course. The pool beside us had karoke going on. It was cute listening to everyone. It was mostly kids around the age of 10 participating. I tried to talk my crew into it, but no one wanted to.

We headed back to the room and of course, someone was hungry. We ate at the family restaurant again, but this time DH was with us. I could tell he was still not feeling well, but he just kept plugging along. He did not want his feeling bad to mess up our vacation. He also started probing the kids on what they wanted to do on our last day of vacation. The next day would be our last full day in the Orlando area. Several ideas were thrown around: stay at the resort and hang by the pool/pools, Universal, Disney, Sea World, or go to the outlets.

We headed back to the room. We were just in time for Illuminations so of course we headed to our spot on the lounge’s balcony. After that it was more Olympics watching in the room. After DD2 was asleep, and DS and DD1 were on the iPods and/or phones and I am half asleep, I heard DH whisper…I know you really want to go to WDW…why don’t you just go ahead and get us one day park tickets. This comment led to a huge conversation. He wasn’t feeling well…we had said we weren’t going…one day park tickets aren’t really cost effective…we had no ponchos and really did not want to buy any since we have a perfectly good set at home…would the kids rather go somewhere else that they haven’t been (Universal or Sea World)…with the crowd levels what could we get done in just one day…which park…we went to sleep still not set on what we would do the next day.

Thoughts on today: DD2 loves to shop at WDW stores. She could look at the same merchandise for hours! With so many restaurants available at WDW, we probably won’t eat at Cookes of Dublin again, but DD2 looked cute all snuggled up in the window. I love to get the free sample of caramel and chocolate at Ghirardelli’s! Goofy’s Candy Company is a cute store!
I have a great family. When one of us is down (DH being sick), the others are understanding and compassionate. When DH asked the kids what they wanted to do on their last day, they all said since he wasn’t feeling well, they would be fine with just hanging out at the resort so he could rest. It wasn’t until he said what if I wasn’t sick what would you want to do that other responses were shared. They made their mama proud!
