Adrienne -- regarding that tip about putting gauze between the gum and teeth; that's because there's a pressure point on the upper lip. Technically, the gauze doesn't even have to go inside the mouth; you can place it over the upper lip to keep the pressure on it, and just have the person tilt the head back enough so that you don't get anything dripping. In a pinch, you don't even need gauze; just use your finger (hold it over your upper lip, like people do when they pretend their finger is a fake mustache). Hold it like that for a few minutes, and it should work.
