Three takeaways from today's race, the Fontana Days 1/2 Marathon:
1) since nothing's been working for me lately runningwise and I am above optimal weight, I tried something new. I held back and paced myself. There's usually a full minute and 20 seconds difference between my first and last miles and so I'm completely out-of-gas and getting passed up at the end. Today there was only about a 30 second differential between my first and last mile and I didn't get passed at all the last 2 miles. In fact, I did some passing. So, success.
2) I love me some Brooks shoes. A smarter person would've figured out long ago that most of his success comes with a certain shoe. Pretty sure every PR I've ever set has been in those shoes, and even though I didn't set one today (there was no chance of that) the race went better than expected and my feet felt great.
3) Cool temperatures are a runner's best friend. I've run this race in 55 degrees and 90 degrees and the difference that makes cannot be overstated. Today it didn't get above 62. Spectacular.
Your attention, please. The Disneyland Limited now leaving for a grand circle tour of the Magic Kingdom. Aboaaard!

I joined Team in Training for the Disneyland half, but it turns out that the person who told me that they have a smaller training group in Brea in addition to the main group in Irvine was WRONG. This means I have a 45-60 minute drive each way to attend their Saturday training runs. I'm not overly thrilled about waking up at 6am just to drive an hour, run, and then drive an hour back home. I haven't attended any of the sessions yet, but I probably will once the mileage increases some - 1-3 mile training runs just aren't worth the 3-hour investment on a Saturday morning.

I completed the Ojai to Ocean Half Marathon on Sunday. I wasn't able to train like I should have due to my PF injury, that knocked me out for 8 weeks. I'm happy to report that, while it was a slow and difficult race, I finished with my 2nd best time and I had ZERO PF pain! I did have other issues that came from my insoles but I remedied them the best I could on the course. They left me with four blisters and some major hip pain. The hip felt better the next day so I'm glad for that. I'm sore, more sore than I've ever been from a race and I'm sure that's due to my lack of training. But, the good news is, I'll be jumping right into my Disneyland Half Marathon training with 6.5 miles on Saturday.

^^^Yeah!!!^^^ So glad to hear you did it! Good luck Saturday! Hope the hip feels better.
As for my PF, I've been rolling my foot over a weight and it's been doing wonders. I think it's breaking down the tissue in my foot and/or stretching it. I taught a class last night with little to no pain, but this morning was a little pain with a small limp. So, I'm re-rolling it again and stretching my foot.
I got Dr. Scholls Inserts for my shoes and they are comfy! I'm gellin'...LOL.
As for training. I miss my usual routines. I'm trying to take it easy, so my workouts are light. Something is better than nothing.

I'm visiting my sister's family for 4th of July - so I just looked and there is a 5K and a 10K in the next town over from them on the morning of the 4th. I'm trying to see if one or more of my nephews/BIL are interested in doing it with me. Since my sister may be having knee surgery, I figure she'll be out. I was considering the 10K, but 'rolling hills' and knowing that they really do mean it, scare me too much. I live in New Orleans. The only hills we have are levees!

Thank you! I'm glad to hear yours is feeling better, too. I also rolled my foot over a frozen water bottle every night and I think that helped, too.

That actually sounds like a lot of fun! I'm used to training on a bit more than "rolling" hills so I'm sure I'd love it. I'll essentially be doing a 10K on Saturday, actually just a little more than that.

Force is strong in this one
Just got back from vacation and I'm taking advantage of the fact that it's a slow week at work and I don't have to show up early in order to cycle commute Tu, W, Thurs. It's only 4.5 miles to work and back, but on Tues/Wed I took a longer route home.
Olympic distance triathlon this weekend. We'll see how that goes.

Well, I ordered a splint today for my PF and got the correct heel inserts. With recitals coming up, I need to put this PF at bay. It acts up a lot...I just don't have time for this!!! With summer classes coming up, this PF is such a major inconvenience! And if I am unable to run the track this summer on beautiful evenings...I will be one sad lady.

Running Around
A couple months ago, my doc barred me from halves this year until I get my weight down (can do a 5k this fall, but haven't picked one out just yet). But, I'm still plugging away - a little at a time! The weight's dropping about 2 pounds a week and my strength and endurance is picking up and the blood pressure is dropping. So, headed in the right direction, and I'm in it to win it.

I was very diligent with my ice, stretching, socks, wearing the right shoes/inserts and no running and it took 2 months to heal.

What kind of socks did you wear? Are they special socks? I miss flip flops and flats. All I wear are sneakers. I'll take any advice...my feet are my job.

It's the Straussburg sock I sleep with.

Wooo Hooo!!!!
2 pounds/week is a GREAT rate! Noticable, when you add up a month, but not so fast you won't be able to maintain the lifestyle that got you there!

No problem. I just hope you find a 'recipe' that works for you. PF is such a pain...literally and figuratively.

Got back to the Galloway schedule this weekend and ran a 6.5 miler on Sunday with DH and DD. It was tough only one week after running a half but Im glad I went ahead and did it. DD is a little discouraged but she is doing great!

We did too! We took the miles easy but I'm looking forward to putting it all out there and push my hardest for a short run.

Well, no thanks to me and my gigantic error, you know you can better your intervals. Sorry again.

No apology necessary. I know Im a stronger walker though, I think I can still maintain a good 14 to 15 minute mile staying with the 30/90 ratio. We will see though. Sunday was rough and my running was WAY slow, but of course my RK was NOT accurate AGAIN so who knows how slow I truly was going. DH wants me to start sprinting up hills to gain some leg strength. Ugh now that sounds reaaaaal fun. Not. :-(

My foot is actually feeling better!!! What is working? Wearing shoes ALL day! If I go barefoot, the PF starts up again. So, with the heel inserts and really good sneakers, this seems to be a good recipe.
I have just been doing weight training, but not jogging or speed walking as of yet. I'm waiting a little while longer for my foot to heal. The sock is on it's way for me to wear at night!

YAY! I'm so happy to hear that you're healing!
I was more or less sidelined from running for two full months and very diligent about wearing support shoes and the sock. Plus rolling over a frozen water bottle and stretching. I'm now running with zero PF pain!
My toe on the other hand? No bueno. I had a huge blister over the entire tip of my pinky toe since O2O two weeks ago. This morning I went to put on my socks and my toenail caught a little on the sock. So, I took off the sock and clipped the part of the nail that was catching. Low and behold (this may be too yucky to read)
Thankfully, I felt an immediate relief from the pressure that I had been feeling. So I cleaned it, put a band aid on it and socks and shoes on.

Ok, not sure what is going on with my training. Doing the same routines I have been doing, taking and/or teaching the same classes I have been but man, oh, man, I am dragging. I feel tired all day every day, I sit down about 2ish and fall asleep within minutes. I've tried going to bed earlier, but it doesn't seem to help. This week I am adding more protein in my morning meal but so far no difference.
While I am exercising things are great, it's just that 2 o'clock time frame, I really need to sit down and sleep for 20 to 30 minutes or I can't make it thru the rest of the day. Any thoughts?

rph13,
You are probably hitting the afternoon slump. It's very common. There's nothing wrong with taking a small power nap. It's actually very healthy to take a power nap when your body tells you that you are tired. As long as you don't take a nap that's too long because it may interfere with bedtime.
That's why they advertise the 5 hour energy burst drinks....but I won't take them. DH did and he said his heart was pounding in his chest.
They say an apple can give you the energy naturally instead of coffee or those energy drinks. Hope this helps a little.
Fairest,
I'm so sorry to hear about your toe!!! I hope it heals quickly! I often hear people talking about their toe nails falling off from running.
I'm gonna call my heel..."Miss Fickle"! Today, I got my heel inserts and the sock. My feet felt great teaching tonight in them with the dance sneakers. We will see how the sock works. The pain moves from my heel to my arch. As long as I stay with my techniques, I think I can get a handle on this.
