MA DATP/ Basic/Advanced Thoughts from MA Card Games

[Moderator Note: As the game is over, all teams are welcome to post answers, questions and comments about Basic, Advanced or Day at the Park]

A great big THANK YOU to the MA staff--you guys really outdid yourself this time!! A huge improvement was the way you grouped the teams and had them exit the ballroom--I doubt you will hear any complaints about that any more. Well done. I can't believe you had 52 things for us to do! Amazing! We could easily go back and spend the same amount of time working on all of the ones we didn't have time to finish. I loved getting out of the ballroom earlier--it was nice to have Downtown Disney all to ourselves and my SIL said it was great to have Fantasyland and Toontown empty as their first location. Speaking of the DD section--I was just plain giddy when I found that painted MA board with the names on it--how cool was that?! Really, really neat and so completely unexpected!!

I'm still trying to decide if I like this format better or the old way better. I have decided that if anybody truly liked the old way better they could simply forfeit all of the A-10 cards and only work on the J, Q, K cards and that would pretty much be "old style". Having figured that out, and realizing that we didn't do any of the K quests, even though we got them, I suppose we really liked the new style better. Our only serious hiccup which caused some angry team members was that at 3:50 we had a choice--turn in the cards that we had finished to get the J, K to work on or do the Q quest (that we had in our hands). We had 100 points ready to turn in and the Q quest was 60. In hindsight, it would have been smart to turn in our cards. However, I had specifically asked Andrew before the presentation what would happen at 4:00 and he was pretty clear (to me) that we would NOT get the J, Q, K quests after 4:00 but that we COULD turn in anything else after 4:00 and we would get still get credit for the points. So we did the Q, and of course, did NOT get the credit for the rest and we didn't have anything else to work on after that either since I thought we could work on more 20 point cards and we couldn't. But, after finding out that my main competition didn't get credit for their points either, I felt a lot better! lol

We had fun working on the Queen quests--I especially liked the charades. So those were a welcome addition to the game.

I think the only thing that I actually missed was that in past MA, quests were limited to a much smaller area. My only suggestion for improvement would be to make the J items in Critter Country, the Q items in N.O. Square and the K items in Frontierland, for example. There were some that we could have done and would have liked to do but it meant going way out of the way and then going all the way back to turn in the cards. I think we entered and exited the security line on the DD Disney quest three times. We definitely did a LOT more walking this time from all of the walking back and forth to the same places over and over again.

I was very surprised at how how much information the staff gave us this time. We NEVER would have been told that we had the wrong answer in the past. I felt like we were cheating by having the chance to figure out what we did wrong and fix it. I discovered that the other teams were given the same opportunity, so of course, it was fair but it felt funny. lol I'm not complaining, however! It was nice and we appreciated it! Made for a lot less aggravation! It was nice having "free hints", too. The staff was plentiful in the right areas, too.

The eye spies were really fun this time, too--we found the majority of them and had fun determining which one was the right one. I'm amazed that you not only had 52 unique cards but that the backs of the cards were all unique, too.

Really, really well done guys (and girls!)!!!!! THANK YOU!!!

I agree, the deck of cards was genius! And I loved the format of this game. We strategized to skip a few of the lower point cards in order to get the face cards. But the fact that each card was it's own mini quest was so creative. Of course, some of those 'mini quests' were nigh impossible for us - but we just decided to skip them and go on to the next.
The eye spys were amazing and so fun to find.

We thought the instructions of having to turn in anything that counted towards the face card quests by 4 o'clock was very clear. By four o'clock we knew that the only thing we should be working on was face card quests, or trivia or eye spy because all we would be able to turn in after that was our yellow (orange?) answer sheet and scan tron.

Thank you so much for such a fun game! I hope you do this format again.

A huge THANK YOU to Alex, AVP, Joe and the rest of the crew. After too many years, we were very happy to be back and playing! This was such a fantastic game and we had an absolute blast. I can't tell you how proud I am of my girls for making it through. I may have had to bribe them with Mickey ice creams and Dole Whips that final hour but they sure were troopers. I can't believe we did as well as we did and we're over the moon with our 2nd place family finish.

We flew through rockets but Bears pretty much sucked the life out of us. It was just so crowded and trying to keep track of 3 kids in that madness just made my head hurt even more than the quests. For the record, we only temporarily lost Ms. M three times during the game and if you know my middle child...that's not bad. :-)

We loved the two Q quests we attempted and my 7 yo rocked out the charades. Out of dumb luck (and in an effort to not have my three girls fight over and lose all of our cards), I found a trading card booklet at Walmart last week. It had 4 card sleeves per page so we were able to put all of the same card (A, 2, 3, etc) together which made the eyespys so much easier for us. We also LOVED the variety of the trivia. What the girls knew, I didn't have a clue...and vice a versa. Apparently we've never shown them the Mighty Ducks because they all pointed to that one and said "What is THAT?!?!" lol

We also had a couple of great "Ah-Ha!" moments. The funniest was for the statues on Main Street. I knew I was missing something obvious with it and as we were crossing back from Tomorrowland I mentioned how we needed to still find that answer. I looked up and saw them and let out an "Oh!" to which each girl one after another let out a gasp as they saw them too. After we got the answer I made sure to commend them on having their first big "Ah-Ha" moment and told them they were officially MouseAdventurers now. The rest of our trip, it became the joke that wouldn't die and we'd have to gasp every time we walked by.

I do have to ask...where exactly was the eyespy lantern by Splash? We even went back on Monday to look for it and STILL couldn't find it.

Thank you again, and we can't wait to try again in the fall! Out of curiosity, do you have any idea what month we might be looking at?

If I recall, it is by the fastpass machines. We only found that one through the "toontown telephone effect" of seeing other people with clipboards hovering and staring.

I just thought of another shout out...

THANK you to the crew members at the charade station for going the extra mile with my girls. I had a slight moment of panic when I realized I would be sending two of my girls over to the island on their own. A crew member offered to escort them over and when they were done, they radioed back to where we were on land to let us know that they were taking them back to the raft and to wait for them there. I really appreciated you guys watching out for them!

The GoPro cameras are pretty cool. The new HD ones are WAY cooler than the old ones. I have 2 of the originals and then 1 of the newest model. They are a bit pricey, but worth the price. Especially if you are into any outdoor sports. I use mine on my Baja bug all the time.

    Thumbs up Awesome Event!!

We (Oswald Returns) had such a GREAT time on Sunday. This was one of our favorite MouseAdventures, which says a lot since this was our 18th event. We had so much fun!!! Looks like we placed 9th place in AdvancedIm pleased with that.

Check-in was extremely smooth. I was so impressed with the organization. I thought the dismissal process was good. It seemed a fair way to get everyone out the door.

I LOVED the format. It was very satisfying to get points awarded on the spot. I really enjoyed having so many puzzles and the decision making that came along with that. We really enjoyed the Queen quests. It was great to see the Happy Haunts on Main Street. We also loved the Queen of Bears quest. So fun!

Here's a little run-down of our day...we started with Rockets and completed every quest in that suit. We moved on to Bears and finished all but the 5 and the King (we decided ahead of time we didnt want to do a counting quest. Those seem to bite us more often than not). Then we moved on to crowns and got all but the 6, Jack, and King. We were running short on time so we had to make a desicion. We had already prepped for Stars and thought we could quickly get the A-10 at 20 points each versus the time it would take to complete the Jack and King. The King puzzle looked really cool and that was hard to pass up! We got answers for seven of the DD cards but didnt have time to get the three that were in DCA. We turned them in at 3:57 hoping to quickly take care of the Queen. Then we found out it was at Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. We couldnt make it there in three minutes. What was the physical challenge there anyway? Wish we could have made it. We then had 30 minutes to solve the Jack and King of Stars. We could not find the characters called out in the Jack quest. We saw the name Gus on the tile mural near the Disneyland Hotel, so I wrote the name of the picture, which sounded very much like a motto. We were so close to solving the King puzzle, but our brains were fried and we ran out of time. We had How many fingers.green or something like that. I didnt hear what the final answer to that was. Nonetheless, what an awesome day at the park and dinner/drinks afterwards definitely a do-over!

Always great to see so many familiar faces and many we haven't seen for a long time. A HUGE Thank you to all the staff who made this great day possible. I hope we will see a MACG#2 sometime in the future.

The fingers one was haw many fingers do you see on the alternating red and green sign (or something like that). It was the walk/ don't walk sign on the side of d-street in DD.

It was the "how to make sure that as many crew members as possible had blisters on their fingers quest."

    Ahem I mean...

Teams were given a kit containing a colored tongue depressor with TEN holes HAND DRILLED into them. There were several pieces of pipe cleaners, some to make legs by putting them through the TEN HAND DRILLED holes and some to make wings by putting them into the TEN HAND DRILLED HOLES and then paper wings to string onto the white pipe cleaners. (You know, the ones you put into four of the TEN HAND DRILLED HOLES.)

There were two self-adhesive googlie eyes in the kit, too.

These created a dragonfly. There's a sign in the trail that says it's good luck for a dragonfly to land on you.

The quest? Put the Dragonfly on your forearm (NOT YOUR HAND) and walk across a rope bridge on the trail without dropping the dragonfly from the tongue depressor with TEN HAND DRILLED HOLES.

TWO teams started (and finished) the quest.

But there were enough kits with HAND DRILLED HOLES for every advanced team... (Leftovers were passed out at the ballroom.)

    Signed,
A Crew Member with a blister/callous on her right forefinger, married to the Crew Member who apparently was the fasted hand driller, per Alex. Could you tell?

Unfortunately the people who can best provide that answer are currently on the maiden cruise of the Disney Fantasy.

    More information next week, probably.

Team Mouse T.A.C.K had so much fun at our first Mouse Adventure event. Considering we had no idea what to expect, were not dressed for the rain and gave up on some quests because we were so cold we are thrilled with 4th place. Thanks to the staff for a great day. We will definitely be back in the Fall!

This shows that sometimes it's knowing when to say "lets move on" than finishing 'everything'.

My sister and I had to figure out how to let the other know "No really, we need to move on" without getting too frustrated with each other. Our 'code' to each other is "Remember that Bug search?" because that was one we both kept going on longer than we should have, and still didn't get it and used way more time than we should have. And it's time we could have used to solve another quest.

Thanks for the recap!! It's fun to relive the event from 26 days ago (that's half a deck!).

Now...can we get the answers to the Eye Spys?

Thanks again for a great day at Disneyland and a great 'deck' of puzzles!

The actual answers as to which were the correct pictures would be nice. I don't live close to the parks so I can't get back to look for them. Just wanted to be able to check my answers. Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry if this has already been asked/answered, but, will additional decks of cards be available for purchase?
