Earlier today RunDisney sent out a message via Twitter that read:
Re: Upcoming #WineDineHalf and #WDWMarathon events, the relay options for both #runDisney events will not return in '12 and '13 respectively
The decision to cancel the Wine and Dine half marathon relay comes as a bit of a surprise, especially as Disney had already begun to accept registrations for the event from people who had deferred from the 2011 race. This move also comes after Disney moved the Wine and Dine event to November 10, to accommodate the new Tower of Terror 10-mile race.
If you're still interested in the regular Wine and Dine Half Marathon, registration opens next Tuesday, March 13.
With Disney cancelling the half marathon relay after just two years, it's not a surprise that they opted not to host the marathon relay in 2013. This announcement has disappointed a lot of people who hoped to do the marathon relay in 2013, but some insiders predicted the race would be a "one and done" due to problems with the race structure.
I guess this makes the Chip and Dale medal even more of a collector's item for those of us who earned it in 2012. It's really unfortunate that they decided to cancel the race rather than resolve the problems. I think the event could have been salvaged, and there are a lot of reasons why it makes sense from Disney to add additional half marathon capacity to the Florida weekend. I guess we'll have to wait until the official announcement from Disney to see if they have another race up their sleeves.
