The only possible way to fit a trip in to Disney this year would be to go from Dec. 28 to Jan. 2. I know the crowds will be bad, but how bad are we talking? What would be the best place to spend New Years Eve and day?

I have yet to have the "pleasure" in WDW, but I was just in DL both before and after this past Christmas. And I can tell you that it was indeed very bad, crowd-wise. But I went in knowing it would be crowded, and I didn't need to ride every ride. I was there at park opening every day, and got a lot done in that first couple of hours. At night it was just about the big shows like Fantasmic! and World of Color, which are always crowded anyway. So if you go in with the right attitude, you can still have fun and enjoy yourself!
Think mobbed and double it. However, the parks open really early that week and if you get up you can get a load done in the first 3 hours. MK opened at 7am that week in 2010 and there were less than 100 people who entered at rope drop with me and DD on December 26th. I found World Showcase to be the most unbearable place that week. Go prepared to get up early and use a touring plan and it is fun. If you want to sleep in then I'd say pass.

The prices also hike up because it's considered peak season. Crowded and more expensive vs. off season. Just be prepared, like mentioned above. Also, avoid the parks that are having the EMH on certain days, they tend to be even more crowded on top of that. Using the right tools, like touringplans.com or the unofficial guide book can really be a big help.

My sister just finished the last step to the Disney CP application process, but it sounds like she might make it. She will be there for Christmas so it looks like we will be down there the day after Christmas until after New Years.
We will be there in November so we will get our rides in then. I am looking forward to seeing the Christmas decorations during the week in December. Good to know what to expect. Thanks guys!

I saw pictures from NYE at Epcot this year that were insane. The Land pavilion upper walkway packed wall to wall, all the way back to the doors with people heading inside.
It seems like the strategy if you are going on NYE is to just find a quiet spot and hang out until you want to find a spot for the fireworks. Don't think about going on any rides.
Really if you get to MK for a 7am opening on NYE you will get on rides for a few hours no problem. We only stayed at DHS till 2pm NYE then had to fly home but it was ok.

We spent January 31, 2010 at WDW. It was a really fun time. We enjoyed the morning and early afternoon with Scoobydooby at DHS. At DHS we heard rumors that MK had "closed" at noon. My family went back to POR for a couple of hours before an early dinner and heard more rumors that MK was closed. We had reservations at Chef Mickey's at 4 p.m. for an early dinner. After the dinner we headed to MK via monorail. We probably got there around 5:30. There was no problem getting into the park. Main Street and Tomorrowland were pretty crowded. We rode the Peoplemover three times in a row and enjoyed some of the music in Tomorrowland. Once we left Tomorrowland, the crowds lightened considerably. We rode several rides in Fantasyland with minimal waits. We visited the Hall of Presidents, shopped and rode Pirates twice because there was no wait at all. We headed back to Main Street for the Electric Light Parade. It was crowded, but we found a spot without a problem. After the parade we scoped out a spot on Main Street for the fireworks with two hours to go before mid-night. It was worth the wait. The crowd was fun and friendly and it was absolutely the best to welcome 2011 from MK. I would LOVE to spend another New Years Eve at MK. If you go, ignore the rumors about MK being closed. We heard that information from guests and cast members at DHS. Even after we were in MK, guests told us the park "closed" at noon and hadn't let anyone in. The best sources of information were Cast Members in the hotels.
I'm guessing you meant to say December 31?
Stan
Thank you everyone for your responses. I've decided that New Year's Week is definitely not for us. It looks like I'll have to go in June of next year instead and hope for the best.

My Dh went 12/30 thru 1/6 - 5 years ago.
Cons: It was definitely mobbed. Craziest ive ever seen for the first few days. We didn't make many adrs back then and paid the price. There is NO WHERE to eat if you dont.
Pros: with that said, it's magical, beautiful and fun and if you're flexible on plans ( we had an amazing new years eve at typhoon lagoon) you can have a not as mobbed day.
Hope this helps!!
It is the PEAK season around Christmas and New Years. It will be mobbed.
Pros: you can still see holiday stuff. And you would be in and out before tourist groups from South America come
Cons: mobbed can't say anything more than MOBBED !
