IF you do Galloway (and TheOtherAdrienne and I have differing opinions on his plan - it's the one I've used and it works for me if I follow it and don't skip weeks like I'm tempted to do), then you'll have an 11, a 12.5 and a 14 all under your belt a month before the actual race. Those long runs or walks (depending on what you're training to do) will really let you know what to expect from your body, and help you fine-tune issues before the event. You'll learn what hurts, how to resolve it, and how to better prepare for next time.

But we have 8 months to prepare. You don't need to do 14 miles tomorrow. You don't even need to do 6. Start slow and build your base; the rest really will come as long as you follow a plan.

would you start with a 5k/10k training plan right now and then move on to the 1/2 marathon training once april rolls around? I've been walking/jogging on the treadmill 4-5 days a week usually about 2-3 miles a day. on weekends when we can DH and I like to take a longer walk.

I would not do that. I'd keep doing what you are doing and start the half plan when it's time. The 10K plan is really aggressive, my BIL and SIL are doing that to prepare for our St. Patty's Day 10K and they started with a 5 miler their first week. You could always do a "longer" run every other week just to start building up your endurance.

I agree. Figure out the date when you will have to start your training program of choice, then work toward having a good solid base mileage of 15 miles/week, including a longer workout on one day a week.

I can't really begrudge anyone who does Galloway. I can see why it works. If you're doing a 14 and a 12.5 mile before your event, you'll REALLY know what to expect.

I just don't believe that it's all that necessary to more than you need to do. On my training plan, (I do a plan for mostly walking,) I do two 8-miles and a 10-mile before the event. In my experience, I have been able to do my fine-tuning with those longer distances.

AVP and I completely agree with start slow and build your base and the rest will come. I do believe that if you pick a plan and follow a plan, you'll get it done. Bingham and Galloway are just two of many plans. I also believe that if you pick a plan and it's not feeling right to you - adjust your plan.

Is Galloway a 15-week plan? I think that's what Bingham is. FWIW, Bingham starts with four days a week at 30-minutes a day and 2 to 3 miles once a week.

AdK- I think Galloway is similar in the amount of weeks. For some reason 14 comes to mind, but I can't say for sure without looking. I stretched mine out so that when I got towards the end I wasn't upping my mileage by 2 miles every other week, just one. So, I had more long runs before the event. I don't think that really made a difference for me, but when I started training I had no idea how my body was going to take the training so I wanted to put in a little fudge factor for myself. For me, actually going to distance in training was an important mental milestone for me. It gave me confidence that I knew I could do it and I knew how I would feel afterwards. I can say this though, I wasn't prepared for how I would feel after the Tink. I didn't push myself and I didn't pay attention to my pace updates on my Runkeeper. I knew I would finish in enough time not to get swept. I did finish 10 minutes slower than WDW, but we stopped a lot more for pics and the restroom. I think that if I hadn't done that my time would have been similar. I felt so much better after Tink than I did after WDW.

Thank you! i think i will continue to do what I'm doing and we'll try to add some longer runs on the weekend when our schedule allows. then when the time comes we'll be ready to start training. I'm going to work on improving my time on my daily workouts.

Adrienne, i was looking for the Bingham training plan online but all i see is one that you purchase. what are the big difference with his and galloways? id like to compare the two and figure what would work best for me but I dont want to spend the $$ if i dont think it's something I'll use.

i was just looking, Galloway is 18 weeks. That puts me at the end of April/ beginning of may to start my real training. I'm not looking forward to long runs in the middle of the summer but I'll have you to help motivate me! I guess i'm going to have to embrace the early mornings aren't I?

If when you say you'll "embrace the early mornings" you mean I'll be beating on your front door and dragging you down the road with me, YES. But only if I have your permission to do so! I love running in the mornings in Temecula. It's nice to be finishing your runs and see all the hot air balloons launching as you are headed home.

This sister checks for day break times and hits the pavement running precisely at that time.

I'm such a rebel. I tried mornings but my reality is that the only way I do anything remotely on a schedule is if I go evenings on my treadmill. I'm totally not typical at all in this regard, but it works for our schedule and the conditions of where we live.

Yeah, if you want to beat the heat you have to start early. I am not a morning runner, but I do get up for group long runs on Saturday mornings.

Does anyone want to give me some suggestions on how to keep up with the running and getting my 15 year old ready for the Sept Half?

I dont want to get "lazy" just because its 8 months away so I was thinking of just sticking with my 2-30 min work outs during the week and than a "long" run on the weekend but should I just stick with 3 miles on the weekends and than as the time approaches start the 14 or 18 week schedule with DD?

I should mention I just did the TINK on Sunday. Im still a little sore so Im resting this week. I might be ready for a work out by tomorrow though.

We are running in Sept with Fairest's charity Team! Go Team Muscles!

I will probably keep up my long runs of at least 6 miles on the weekend, but plan to do more strength training and cross training this winter.

Using a run/walk/run training method is a great way to get started. That's how I did it.

On another topic. When I started training back in July I promised myself that I would listen to my body and back off when I need to. Well, I think After this Sunday's 10K I'm going to back off a good bit. Between the two half marathons in January, my poor hip is tired. It took two weeks (at least) for my hips to recover and feel great on a short run after the WDW half. They are still feeling the effects of the Tink from a week ago. I ran four miles on Friday and my hips were really tired afterwards. I'm going to take ONE short run this week and then maybe move to the elliptical to get some additional cardio in. I have a 10K on Sunday that I was hoping to push myself for time, but I think I'm just going to take it easy and enjoy the view (Coronado Island). After this year I'm going to have to cap it to 1-2 half marathons a year.
