I officially transitioned from a conditioning schedule to a "training" schedule today! My 30 minute run/walk went great. I'll have no problem adjusting my intervals next week as long as I don't have issues on my long run on Friday. I know we're 5 months out, but I know I'm going to take longer than most to train with my RA. Baby steps.

I'm going to start training to "run" the WDW event as soon as the Disneyland half is over. I'm doing the first leg of the Chip and Dale relay in January, and I want to work up to at least 50/50 run/walk interval by then. In my ideal world, I'll be able to bump up to running most of the 2012 Disneyland half. That race will be my Coast-to-Coast race, and then I'm probably done. (Where have I heard that before....)

AVP, that's an awesome goal! I seriously doubt I'll be able to do a 50/50 run/walk in January. If I can do a 5/1 walk/run then I'll be in good shape and blissfully happy.

Thanks for the encouragement! I am training very slowly (already following a modified version of Jeff Galloway's program) because I've got RA and had a total hip replacement a couple of years ago. I know my training is going to go much slower than most since I've really got to listen to my joints. I'm having issues with my glute seizing and I'm thinking it has to do with all of the scar tissue in that muscle from my surgery.

As awful as it sounds, sit on a tennis ball and roll around until you feel the sensitive spots. Rest it there until you feel the muscle release. That's the best treatment for tight glutes and piriformis muscles. You might also want to look into massage and active stretching therapy. Glutes are tough to work out on your own!

I'll try the tennis ball, thanks! Also, thanks for the previous suggestion of the foam roller. I'm using it a lot (although I could use it more) and it's helping a lot. I did get a massage Sunday and she did a deep muscle therapy on my glute and finished it with Biofreeze. Boy, did that feel awesome. I've never heard of stretching therapy. I'm assuming it's more than just stretching. Speaking of, I've gotten a much better stretching routine after my runs now as well.

Thanks! And please, keep the 'experienced runner' tips coming, this is all very new to me. Obviously I wasn't a fan of running before my hip replacement, EVERYTHING was very painful.

I have to say, the fact you're tackling this after hip replacement is very inspiring. I'm somewhat training a friend who also decided to run her very first 1/2 at WDW and the advice I was given when I started doing this stuff is the advice I gave her, listen to your body, train smart and don't be afraid of rest.

Well, you know I'm training so I can burn calories more efficiently at F&W, right?

Run Disney posted a picture of the Donald bling on Facebook just now. I love it and can't wait to earn it!
BTW, my short run was awesome this morning. No pain what so ever and I picked up my pace a wee bit!

Here's the image of the medal. I think Donald's eye looks a little zombie-like.

I completed a five mile "long" run this morning. I'm sore andy legs feel a little jello-ish, but the ice bath did wonders! The last mile was hell, but I feel so accomplished (and tired).

Seriously hoping that the Relay is a success. Just spotted that it's 51% full, so that's something. *Nala* and I have already projected that as our goal to run for the 2014 WDW Marathon Weekend. We have to make it through another year with a new cub first, so that will be the start of our training . . . We'll be checking back in to get training tips and see how this year's went for everyone.
