I want the apple tarte and the chantarelle/corn soup thingie.
If I go down, I'm going down fat and full.
You might've had it before... I have.Or they might have had something very similar that they've slightly differently package this time. One thing I'm figuring out is that these chefs, they're very good, but they do repackage and revisit familiar themes.

Sheepishly: We all loved Napa Rose chef's counter last week for my BD (Tuesday the 19th). I got Happy Birthday in chocolate on one of the deserts. All 4 of us got the chef's creations, and I added the wine pairings. We shared everything back and forth amongst us (I skipped several fish/seafood items though
) BUT- I don't really know what all we ate! I was busy enjoying it and didn't take notes or pictures... Oh well, just have to do it again someday!

For anyone who's interested, here's the current Vintner's Menu.
And for Leota's Necklace, here's the first part of the dessert menu.
And the second part of the dessert menu.
I guess I have a glitch in my matrix.
blah blah blah blah
More drooling from me - that pumpkin bundt with pumpkin ice cream looks amazing. Yum.
So, if one goes to NP and asks to have the chef create a "tasting menu" for them... does it vary from the vinter's menu? If two different people at the table ask for the tasting menu will they each get different items for each course?
Yes, and yes.
You can tell the chef about anything you really won't eat. (You should have an open mind to best appreciate the counter, IMO, but I really don't care for organ meats or sweetbreads; some people have allergies.)
Because I'm opinionated, I might see something I like on the menu that sounds great and "suggest" that I'd really like to try it if possible.
I also have some wine pickiness and I usually mention that.
And I sometimes pick my own dessert.
I don't recall getting much that was identical when it's been just two people, unless it was a dessert. There have been times when someone gets something as a started and another gets it as an entree. I *think* that's been one of the dishes someone specifically has requested, though.
I try not to be excessive in my requests (cough, cough). Usually there is plenty of time to talk to the chef/waiter/sommelier at the counter and it's not a problem. They want you to have a great experience.
I've had a tasting menu at a regular table and I tried to rein it in a bit (cough, cough), since you don't talk to the chef directly.
So I'm reading my bean feed...
"...since I don’t do drugs, I spend the money that I save on good dried beans." David Lebovitz
When DH and I dine at the chef's counter I usually do the following:
First, I tell chef that I'm not a fan of cooked green pepper, I get horrible indigestion.
Second, I tell chef if I've already had anything on the existing menu and/or suggest things that look interesting to me.
DH always asks our server to choose a red only wine flight for himself.
When we both let chef choose our food, we never get the same thing. I totally love that because we share everything. When we've gone with another couple sometimes items are repeated but not within the couple. Does that make sense?
Only once have I even remotely made a suggestion about dessert and that was when I was really in the mood for a glass of Magicale.
ETA: I'm looking at our calendar for the next month and I'm realizing that I need to book for an evening in December since that's the soonest we'll be able to get back.

How do you like your kindle?
Uh, it's an iPad.
For anyone who's interested, pumpkin risotto is now on the appetizer menu for Napa Rose. I didn't take a picture of the Vintner's Menu when I popped in yesterday, but the first course is a white fish (red snapper, I think), and the main course is a white fish also (halibut, I think), which I thought was a little weird for them to do two fishes on the same menu. Looked interesting though. The second course was a sort of shepard's pie using veal and veal sweet breads. Can't remember what the dessert was.
I guess I have a glitch in my matrix.

It's been a while since we've been to NR. How often do they change their menus? Monthly, weekly, quarterly?
We have ressies mid-Dec. at the Chef's counter and wonder how different it'll be from what cstephens posted as the most recent Vintner's Menu.
Karin
Thank you bennette and fairest! Tasting menu is what I ask for right? I don't want to look like a dupe! We won't be at the counter though. I swore next time I dined at Napa Rose it would be at the counter, but this will be a special evening for us and we opted for the table so we could enjoy the quality conversation time together. Thanks for deciphering my NP as standing for Napa Rose above... must have been tired...
Is the tasting menu billed as the same price as ordering the Vinter's Menu or does it vary?
I hope they still have that pumpkin risotto in a couple weeks when DH and I have our ressies! Did you try it cstephens?
Karin, the Vintner's menu changes weekly. They adjust the main menu seasonally but it's not necessarily on one date, they gradually roll out the new menu.
Yes, you say you'd like to have a tasting menu and be prepared to let them know if you have any allergies or strong dislikes.
Yes the tasting menu is priced the same as the Vintner's Menu and if you ask for wine pairings, that will be priced the same as the Vintner's pairings.
HTH!

OH OH OH, here's a little tip.
The last time I was at a table, the server resisted a little when someone at our table ordered a tasting menu. She suggested they couldn't do it at the table. Don't worry if the server says that. Just politely say you're pretty sure you can.It turned out that she thought we wanted the chef to come out to the table and talk to us. We knew he(she) wouldn't do that if we were at the table and let the server know that we were ok with her taking the information to the chef. So just be prepared but it'll work.

I'm amused that the Disney Park Blog entry about Napa Rose was during the week of the blue foot chicken.

Is it too early to get a Christmas menu yet?
We'd like to go for Christmas day dinner, can we make ressies now, or is it too late or too early?
And what is a tasting menu exactly?
rstar, "tasting portions" are smaller portions. For example, I had a tasting portion of the carpaccio, and it was essentially half the amount of fish that a normal plate would have. This way you can tackle all the plates that come with the chef's choice or vintner's menus and still theoretically have room for dessert.
Since you're well within 60 days of Christmas Day I would call immediately.
If I go down, I'm going down fat and full.
