NEW signature countdown timer
This post is obsolete. Please see the new signature countdown timer instructions.
We have set up a new signature countdown timer that replaces the old [countdown] code. The new feature is very easy to use and requires no coding. It's configured from the User Control Panel link labeled "Edit Countdown/Countup".
Instructions for using the new countdown feature:
- Go to the Edit Countdown/Countup link in your User Control Panel.
- Enter the text you would like to see while the countdown is active in the field labeled "Message to display before specified time:". Your text can be up to 120 characters long.
- Enter the text you would like to see after the countdown expires in the field labeled "Message to display after specified time:". Your text can be up to 120 characters long.
- Set the date and time at which the countdown should expire, and don't forget to set "Active" to "Yes".
- Click "Save".
Your new countdown will appear below your signature; it does not appear in the post preview, only in the actual submitted post. Feel free to post in this thread to test your new countdowns. Note that you must have something in your signature or the countdown will not appear at all.
Please note that the old [countdown] code will be turned off in the near future.

Testing to see if I did it right. Also how do you add a second countdown thread?

Waiting impatiently for next trip
I notice it's called countdown/countup. Will it add days after the countdown? So the text could say something like "At Disneyland for:" and it would count the days you are there until you get home and reset it?

The old FAQ is gone now but I'm pretty sure it asked that you only have one countdown in your signature at a time. I don't think the new style will permit two at all.

Bummer we cannot have two countdown clocks. The one I just added doesn't seem to be counting down at all.

You were only ever supposed to have one countdown at a time, we just weren't manually editing the signatures anymore. The new tool only allows one countdown.

Yes, it should work that way. If the target date is in the past, the countdown will become a countup.

Correct.

You had it set to "Days/Hours", so you'd only see a change once an hour. I changed it for you to "Days/Hours/Minutes/Seconds" so you can see the change every second.

EDIT: Yup, it worked. Awesome. Can't wait to finally use it once my next trip is confirmed.

It seems so much easier to set up than the code, now to see if it works.

Ok--I had two countdowns for the same thing (after I used the new system) so I went into my signature and deleted the old one--now I don't have any? It's showing as active but not showing up . . . . . help!
ETA: nevermind--I think I fixed it . . . .

Andrew: I've tried putting space between the "signature" and the countdown" and even though I've inserted a couple of returns it doesn't show up that way. Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks!

To add a blank line above the countdown, paste the following at the very bottom of your signature:
[space] [/space]
[space] [/space]

Notice: the old [countdown] code will be turned off!
This is your official notice that the old [countdown] code will be turned off tomorrow, Tuesday August 24, sometime in the afternoon. When that happens, countdowns using the old code will disappear from your publicly-visible signature in posts. The code will still be visible in the signature editor so you can copy the text before you delete it.
So now would be a good time to switch over to the new countdown! See the first post in this thread for instructions.
