I am curious to anyone who may know, how does the HA situation work on Haunted mansion? do they have special doom buggies? Is that why the ride stops every now and then, so someone with special needs can enter / exit?
Just curious, again. BTW, I shut the ride down last time by pushing my doom buggy front thing up a few seconds too soon. The CM at the end was super friendly, said they had just reset the e-stop mechanism that morning at it was SUPER sensitive, but I felt like a dope stopping the ride for five minutes.

I hate playing "my park is better than your park" (and I'm a DL person) but I have to agree that the queue for TSM at WDW is pretty amazing. I was really glad that I knew enough (thank's Mouseplanet) to go thorugh the Standby queue once (1st thing in the morning, after stroller parking and getting fastpasses to go back later). It did make DL's posters look fairly boring.
I've only been with a person in a wheelchair once, ages ago. At that point, because we were a party of more than x (6?) they made part of the group wait in the regular lines and the wheelchair wait at the handicapped entrance. When the main group got to the front, then they loaded the wheelchair. It sounds like that is no longer the case, at least, not on busy days.

You first talk to the person at the entrance to the line. They will give you a card based on your needs. You then go to the hearse and wait there for a CM to come to you. Based on the color of the card will determine what happens.
If you have a green card, you park your WC or ECV by the hearse. You wait in line on the ramp. When it is your turn, you will walk the rest of the way, and exit normally. When you exit, you will come out, then in the little side gate to retrieve your WC or ECV.
If you have a red card, you will take your WC or ECV with you. When it is your turn, you will enter the elevator last. When the elevator is stopped, they will ask you to wait til everyone has exited. Then the elevator operator, will walk you down the side aisle to the loading area where they will alert the loading people you are there. There you wait for the doom buggies to cycle. When it gets to #5 (there are 131 buggies) they will stop the ride. The moving walkway will stop. You will then either maneuver the WC onto the walkway and transfer, or walk from the chair area to the buggie. After the ride, you will not exit at the regular exit. You will circle back to the load area where they will stop the ride so you can exit (and the next guest can load.) You will then walk back up the side aisle and wait for an elevator operator to assist. After they empty the elevator, they will escort you back into the elevator and ask you to stay against the wall. When you get back up to the entrance, they will ask you to wait while they load everyone. Once everyone is in the elevator, they will exit you. (As you can tell, I have done this a few too many times.)

Sorry if I am dunst, but whats the hearst? The house?
So you stay on the ride, what does it look like between the exit and entry area? How far of a ride is it?
So you get back to the entry area, the ride stop, you exit, and you go back up the elevator with just you and the CM on it? So you get to see it un-stretch?
Wow, I can see how this ride could take ages as a WC or ECV guest when everyone else is walking on, there can basically only be one special needs person at a time, out of 131? That dispels alot of the myths...

The carriage out front with the coffin in it.

A dark hallway. It's where the control room is for the ride so you see.... a black curtain with light coming out from above and below it. Woo-hoo! LOL It's actually rather short. You don't realize how close you are to the beginning of the ride when you're at the end.

It's technically a lift, not an elevator so the thing is that they can't take as many people up as they can take down. Which is another reason to restrict the size of the groups going through the line with a wheelchair, ECV, ect.

It's still waiting, you're just waiting a different way. People realllly don't appreciate it until they've really done it.

I've never gotten a card with my wheelchair!
I've never had to get a card when I've gone on HM and I'm always in my wheelchair in the parks. We just go up the wheelchair ramp and wait for the CM to let us enter the Mansion, then follow the rest of the directions as outlined above.
Also, they always ask if I have to have the belt stopped, which I do, so it's interesting to hear it happening as a normal thing. They've never let me use my chair to get to the doom buggy, I've always had to leave it just past the entry gate and walk to the vehicle. I guess I've always gotten different CMs for this or something.
Be prepared to probably wait quite a while to be able to get into a vehicle. Up until the last time we were in the parks and were fortunate to get to the end at just the right time to get onto the vehicle right away, it's always been a long wait for us. But at least it's air conditioned inside!
I've always hoped they'd come up with a wheelchair accessible vehicle, like at WTP, Buzz, Monsters or Toy Story, but so far, they haven't done it yet. The most interesting thing about having to access the attraction this way is when we're going back up in the elevator and we get to watch the portraits shrink back to their original size!

Since we are with a Service Dog, we always have to have the belt stop. But we have seen them take the WC out onto the belt to make a shorter transfer for someone who was physically transferring another person. I think if you can walk the few steps, they prefer that.
The loop from the exit to the load area is maybe 30-40 seconds. There really is nothing to see, like AdK said.
The card may be something that is used more when it is busy. I know we get them about 50% of the time.

I'll add that while you stand in the waiting spot, you get to hear the SAME line over and over again as the doom buggies pass by. I believe it's "...pull down on the safety bar, please. I will lower it..."
And you get to stand and be gawked at by all those loading onto the attraction. Yay!

The CM gets to hear that all day long, lucky them. I always wonder how far they walk in a shift on that conveyor belt.
Thank you everyone for the insight into this attraction! Twinwife may be in an ECV on our next visit, so this gives me an idea of what to expect.

Actually, the CMs rotate. They are outside handling the line entering (several locations), running the elevator, running the exit area, or running the loading area, so generally they only get stuck with that for 20 mins at a time. Very rarely is the person who loaded you there when you return to the front.
If your wife can walk on the moving walkways, and walk from the front of the mansion through the hallways to the buggy, it will be much faster if you leave the ECV outside at the hearse.

I used the ECV when I was there in May. They asked if I could walk a little ways. I said yes. I forgot they meant going into the elevator, and then the room where the portraits light up. I cannot stand for long periods of more than a minute or 2. The ride kept stopping (tech. difficulties) and I had to stand. The strength is not there yet in my leg since the accident. When I go in October, I am going to take the ECV to the doom buggies

Renting Wheelchairs?
We might need to rent a wheel chair for both parks. Where do you do this and what is the price? Also is there a discount for Disney Visa members?
Is the wheelchair rental work the same as the stroller where it has to stay in the park?

Strollers rent for $15 (two for $25), wheelchairs are $32, and ECVs are $65. Both the wheelchair and ECV prices include a refundable $20 deposit. During peak periods a joint rental operation for both parks may be set up in the Esplanade area between Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure; during slower periods of the year each park runs its own rental operation immediately inside each park.
Yes, you can only take the wheelchair to the Parks and the Esplanade between the parks. If you want a wheelchair or scooter that can go outside of the parks, there's a discussion in the Theme Park Access guide with several first hand experiences with various companies that provide this service.

thanks I guess I should have checked that before I asked my question. Sounds too pricey for me so we might just do without if we can. Atleast with the strollers I can get the Disney visa discount.

I rent from Deckert's and get a rate about $30 a day. It delivers and will pick up from the hotel

$30 for a manual chair?
Deckert's is my rental choice also. (The two fav's here are Deckert's and OC Medical.) I generally rent the ECVs, and their prices vary depending on the length you rent for. For 2.5 days, I usually get a rate of $72. But a week will be about $170.
The strollers are cheaper, and don't require a deposit.

Malcon, I was told $90 for 3 days for an ECV! When we were there in May, I paid $120 for 4 days. You were the one who recommended Deckert's to me!

Yep, and the prices vary depending on the length of time.
But the OP was asking about a wheelchair. I think they rent for considerably less.

I don't know about the wheelchair, but that was a great price for the ecv. I would think they would have a good deal for the wheelchair.

For a place that is so highly suggested around here and "other" Disney boards, you would think they would have a website!!! Hard to find their number, I have search old threads!
Will be calling them soon to rent an ECV for twinwife...

I know the ECV rentals at the park are $50 and $20 is refunded. My question is it $70 when you rent and get $20 back making it $50 or are you charged $50 then get $20 back making it $30?
I don't know and I don't care if It's a Small World. It's a nice day when you wake up in Disneyland.

The ECVs rent for $50. You also have to put down a $20 refundable deposit. So, a total of $70. Also, there is tax on the $50.
