I feel like I've gotten my money's worth so far. Discount on the Expo, free studio tour, free admission to the family museum's preview weekend, and the magazine. That's all worth it to me.
We'll see how next year pans out. They've got some growing pains, but I think they're doing a fairly good job so far.
Personally, the only thing I would really enjoy would be the magazine. So, I just get that ala carte.
I think that if you are able to use all the discounts and perks, it would be worth it - but only if you were going to partake in those activities in the first place.
The search function is like the Force. It may take practice, but the more you use it, the more control you will have over it!
I loved the magazine but D23 Expo was the only event I did. I no longer check their site. I do not have $500 for an event, cannot travel far, have a mother, limited discretionary funds, and am not going to set there on the computer banging away while trying to get a rare studio tour.
I have been with Disney since 1960 and am happy with what I got. I am just worn out with D23 offerings which many Disney free things and groups like passporter and mouse planet offer me. I have done the Wine and Food Festival, 4 Trick or Treat events, and will be dong more holidays in the park.
I could get more new here and other sites. I say get the membership as the magazine alone is worth it. do not lose the card as they do not replace the card so for each future even I have to find the email and print out a copy to show I am a member. The ONLY site in 52 years that has done that to me. Loose a card and pay or loose a card and a free one.
As they say in Latin, caveat emptor, let the buyer beware. If you buy into D23, you might get a few minutes of pleasure, but in the end all you really have is an empty wallet, and the monkey horde in Burbank is laughing all the way to the bank.
Yes, but isn't that what happens with any entertainment service? We're paying for those moments of pleasure.
I've got a mixed opinion on my D23 membership!
So far, we've really enjoyed the magazine, as well as the "vintage" surprise that comes with each one we've received.
The only event we've been able to go to so far is the D23 Expo, which everyone who wanted to got to attend, whether or not they were members. The only difference was a discount on tickets for the members.
We've tried and have not been successful at getting tickets for some of the other events so far, namely, the Disney Studio tour and the WDW Christmas event, even tho I was on the computer at the right time, doing the right things to be able to get tickets.
Not getting into the WDW event is the most upsetting to me, since we are going to be there at this time and were willing to add the 2 extra days to our reservation and pay the additional amounts for another 2 days of hotel and food.
So I'm going to try one more year, to see if we're able to get into any events and if we still can't, I will cancel our membership and get the magazines at Barnes & Noble, even tho we won't be getting the "vintage" surprise with it.

The Expo was open to anyone so what have I gotten from this besides a bit of gift stuff that is misplaced and a magazine? You have to set on the computer and try to get a rare opening for the cheap and free events while the rest I cannot afford. A total stranger at one point asked me about whether to join D23. I told them it depended on what they wanted out of it. For someone who doesn't live local to L.A. or Orlando, I don't think it's really worth it, because you don't really have a chance at the freebie stuff. Yeah, I know they did the Walt Disney Museum thing too, but that's not something that would happen all the time.
I was iffy on joining but the husband wanted to, and I was willing to give it a shot. So far, I don't regret joining. The freebie gift didn't really do anything for me because I didn't have a particular attachment to it. The magazines we could have just bought. For the Expo, I did appreciate being able to get in early every day, although we only used it a couple of times. But the first day, it especially came in handy. And we got the discount for going multiple days, as I recall. We got into the Studio Tour, which was really nice. We didn't get into one other thing we tried for, and we didn't try for any of the screenings at the El Cap.
So far, I'm happy with what we've gotten and plan to renew next year. YMMV.
It has been worth it to me, but like others have said it depends what your expectations are and your ability to attend the events. This is what I got out of it this year:

The more recent events seem to cost more money and the ones that include theme park admission do not take into account if you already have an annual pass. I'm on the fence about renewing next spring. If they announce more free events or some less expensive ones, I will renew for sure.

Has anyone herd about The D23 Fan Club?
Gus, How can you get the magazine by itself? I purchased the first 5 issues at my local Disney Store, but they informed me after the Spring 2010 issue, they would no longer carry it. The Disney Store website only lists it as part of the Gold Membership.....Can you really still purchase it a la carte?

The Disney Store website does sell the individual issues, but I don't know if they plan to after the physical stores stop. Send them an email.
Thanks, I just checked and they have no info about the Summer 2010 issue apart from the Gold Membership....I'll keep looking....but I'll join D23 if that's the only way to get the mag now....it's the only thing that interests me about D23....
I didn't feel it was worth it, I didn't renew this year. The magazine is very nice, but eh...so? $75 bucks buys a lot of magazines. I actually joined just so I could go on the Studio Tour and could never get a ticket so that was a bust.

I renewed at full but thought a lot about it. I took a guess that there would be some very unique events coming in the year and that Disney would actually start doing more D23 events and fewer AP events. Now that the History event is coming, and they had the Anniversary event (which was OK but not awe-inspiring) I think it is worth to at least get Silver so you have access. I keep thinking at some point they would do a Gold-gets-first-dibs event only because it seems that's the Disney way more and more - pay more and get more access.
