Los Angeles Police ruled the city and even parts of the county. Half the police in the 1920's were doing illegal activities. The were given free rein to do what ever it took to get rid of crime in Los Angeles and they did so with the murder of innocent men. If you wronged a police officer then you could have ended up in the mental hospital or even dead.

A single mother has a great job as manager in the telephone company and she has a son who at the age of 9 disappears. Months later a boy is given to her and she knows it is not her son, teacher knows this, and his dentist knows this. She is put in the mental hospital to make her stop making the police look bad. Toward the end the mass murderer is revealed and some scenes were graphic.

It is scary to think that in my county police could murder, hush up, and hide their sins at will. Parts of the story are left out like that the mass murder's mother was alledged to have helped him.

Billy Elliott. It's rated "R", but the only reason for that rating was language. There's no graphic sex or violence, or any particularly intense themes. In fact, most of the language issue was one word, liberally used in conversation, but with a very heavy accent from Northern England. In fact, one of my kids kept coming into the room, and I told her the movie wasn't for kids, but there was nothing on the screen that was inappropriate for her to see, and, I am quite sure, she could not understand the accent to make out that one word. The movie was very good, and I wished I'd seen the Broadway show. I really liked how his dancing was not polished-he had raw talent, but was not yet trained. There were also some funny and light moments, and some parts were really touching.

I saw Leap Year. It was pretty good, not wonderful. An enjoyable movie, mostly, but not one I could see raving about. There were parts that seemed long and boring. But the good parts were good. I loved the main guy and the Irish countryside, and there was a lot of humor and heart. A three out of five.

Red Cliff directed by John Woo. The western release (one 2 and 1/2-hour movie as compared to two 2-hour movies)

The CGI didn't come through on our TV to well but it was an excellent movie. Lots of interesting battle strategy, good acting, pretty good roles.

I love Chinese epics. I love listening to Mandarin and Cantonese. (This was Mandarin.)

"The Book of Eli" - Terrific movie. I hadn't really known where it was going, and I thought it had an interesting message. Denzel Washington and Mila Kunis were both really good.

Also saw trailers for "Clash of the Titans" and "The A-Team". Both looked great, the latter surprisingly so. I was also amused that Liam Neeson is playing both Zeus and Hannibal and looks equally terrific as both!

Now different is nice, but it sure isn't pretty, pretty is what it's about
I never met anyone who was different who couldn't figure that out
But beautiful, I'd never live to see
But it was clear, if not to her, well, then to me.

I just saw Legion. I don't want to say it was bad, but, well, it was essentially a zombies attacking the people held up in the middle of nowhere. But instead of zombies, they were possessed people, and instead of being helpless they have the help of a supernatural being, similar to some later zombie type movies (Resident Evil comes to mind). It is centered around a MacGuffin that had no real explanation. I would rather have had no explanation like a typical zombie movie where they living dead are just there, and there is no reason for it. but in this movie they try to explain why, and it never really makes sense. In fact, the whole plot had so many unexplained things, that you just kinda went, huh? I guess you can get lost in the action and pretend the plot or reasoning doesn't matter, because this one really didn't try. It seemed more like they thought, woudln't it be cool if these two supernatural beings could just battle it out, and tried to make a story out of it, but it never really worked. There are far better zombie movies out there, like the living dead series or even Resident Evil.

Feel free to say it was bad. I will.

There were some interesting ideas underlying everything but they were not explored in any interesting way and the execution of the surface story was awful.

As for Book of Eli I did enjoy it but it was an instance of the greatest movie stupidity I've had in a while. It has a twist at the end and I completely missed it. Then I continued to completely miss it while Lani and I talked about until finally Lani realized I had missed it and said it explicitly.

'Extraordinary Measures" - I really enjoyed it. A very quiet film, and both Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford were good, as was Keri Russell. I only cried a little during the movie.

After an exhausting day of non-stop running since 5:30AM, I settled into watching a couple of old John Hughes films from Netflix-Pretty In Pink and Sixteen Candles-a Molly Ringwald themed night. There is a big difference between a PG-rated movie from the 80's versus the past few years-the language was a lot more explicit, and both would have been rated PG-13 now. Also, my kids noticed a lot of people smoking, especially in Pretty in Pink a lot of underage drinking, and there were more serious themes. How sad that the Jon Cryer character was, apparently, homeless and without a family. In Sixteen Candles, there was an aspect of the sister's wedding which seemed contrived, but was actually quite credible. The bride gets her period the day of her wedding, and took a "muscle relaxer" to deal with the discomfort. She appears to be high at the ceremony, so out of it I was surprised the priest considered her competent to take her vows. Many years ago, I took a dosage of a popular OTC medication, which was a mild analgesic and muscle relaxer. At least six hours later, I had one drink with friends, and, within minutes, I was bouncing off the walls-hours later, the room was still spinning. My then BF, now husband, seriously considered taking me to the ER-when I recounted the scene, he remembered the incident very well. I never took a "muscle relaxant" again. Anyway, I enjoyed the movies.

My son and I watched Surrogates on ON Demand last night. It was interesting but not fabulous. I did like the ending.

I was a high school senior in Johnstown (actually a suburb-the "nicer" part of town by Johnstown standards, not too impressive by the standards of real cities), when they filmed Slapshot, and it was a big deal to sit in the audience. One of my friends' uncles worked for the Johnstown Jets, the real hockey team featured in the movies, and I went to a lot of games with her. We wanted to skip school to sit in the audience when they were filming a game, and we actually asked our mothers if they would write an excuse for us for the day. We did not ask them to lie about what we were doing, and would not have skipped school otherwise. I was already accepted to college, was caught up with my schoolwork, and there were no tests that day, and my mother relented and let me skip school, to be one of hundreds of "extras." You remember the cute blond skater in the movie-I knew her; she went to our school, and her brother was a friend of my brothers. She was in high school, and they made her look a lot older.

Last night I was watching The French Connection on one of the movie channels. Goes back to the days of no cell phones (remember phone booths?), no GPS, no laptops. I guess they did not even use drug-sniffing dogs then. Old school police techniques.
