Avenue of the Giants 1/2, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, May 6

This morning I joined Team in Training with the goal of running the Avenue of the Giants 1/2 on May 6. It'll be my first half; up until now the longest races I've run have been 5Ks (Warrior Dash twice, Santa Cruz once).

Anyone else planning to run this one?

I've thought about doing this race in the past after reading about it in Runner's World magazine. I'm tempted to give it a try. How quickly does the registration fill up?

I'm excited you're joining TNT. Go Team!

I'm intrigued. I'm looking for a race late spring that I don't have to get on a plane to do, but that isn't necessarily in Southern Ca. That would be a decent weekend getaway. I'd have to do it alone though since DH will be running the La Jolla the weekend before that. I'll have to do some investigating.

I think Santa Cruz has one in May too. Maybe it's late in the month though.

The race's awful, awful site says
It has been a long time since we have had to close registration prior to race day, and we don't expect to do so this year (2011).
So it hasn't been updated in over a year, but they didn't think they'd close early. Last year.

Two week countdown! I'm excited. Was thinking of getting a GoPro camera so I can film this and other races, but I'm not sure. Long range weather looks good!

I got a GoPro for my birthday, but I hadn't considered wearing it during a race. Hmmm...

Wish I could borrow it to try it out before buying! I've seen some decent video online with head-mounted GoPro.

That weather forecast sounds better than ours the same day for the Diva. High of 74.

    Good luck runners!

The race was fantastic! Beautiful weather and scenery. We waded into the Eel River afterward to cool down our tired legs. I had my best time ever: 2:17:53!

I finished my first half. 2:45:59. Felt pretty good, but slowed down a little in the last mile.

    A+++, would race again.

Big congratulations Andrew for finishing your first half in excellent time! And a big congratulations Steph for PRing! Hmmm.. my friends are moving up there soon. I may have to consider this race in the future, betting I can stay with them.

    How flat/hilly was the course?

Pretty flat with two moderate overpasses. Shaded (under the redwoods) almost all the way.

That sounds so beautiful. If I weren't a good distance away and pregnant, I'd put this on the race list asap. Hmmm... maybe in 2014.
