i'm driving from nashville, tn and i'm kinda worried about ice on the interstates (especially through the mountains. i don't think i'd have to worry about it around orlando, i wouldn't think it gets icy down there usually.
any advice?

Driving from central/western Virginia, not to worried about the weather, we moved to VA from UT 1 year ago so we are used to bad weather. We will see you there!
Long live HISTA and the DODGERS!!
One would think that the general rules for road trips apply:
- Get your vehicle prepared.
- Plan your route
- Dont drive tired.
- Slow down in bad (or even questionable) weather and/ or fog.
I would think that if you are traveling in areas where the temp has dropped to or below freezing overnight on a consistent basis, then be careful for frosty roads at night / in the morning until they properly warm up. This will most likely be less of a problem as you go further south.
The search function is like the Force. It may take practice, but the more you use it, the more control you will have over it!
Hey Grumpy!!
Greetings from the other side of the Valley!!!! We moved to Charlottesville 10 years ago from Ft. Lauderdale our nice little 3 hour drive turned into a 13 hour grind.
In responce to the original post...don't worry to much about the traffic we head to the World the Saturday after Thanksgiving and with one excpetion it is a very smooth and traffic free run. The ONLY time we had issues was back in 2004 we got stuck in some wierd travel time zone and it took 5.5 HOURS to pass from SC to GA. Yes I said five and a half HOURS. Then the nice people at the Florida Highway Partol closed TWO of the four available lanes of I95 at the GA / FL border for oh about 10 miles creating yet another slow down. Our "normal" 13ish hour run took almost 19 hours. But that was the ONLY time we ever encountered any adverse traffic.

Yeah I'm 53 and I still go to Disney World!
Don't forget it all started with Mickey and almost ended with Mikey!
First trip: October 09, 1971 Next trip: Wandering the Magic Kingdom right now in my head!
Beware of "Black Ice", in Florida it occurs after a hard, quick rain storm. The oil dropped from all your fellow travelers vehicles seeps down through the asphalt and then gets quickly pushed back up to the surface by the sudden torrent of rain. It's fairly rare but it does happen. In 38 years of living in Florida I only encountered it twice.

I drive from Murfreesboro and have never had a problem with ice in December. You just have to watch the news and make sure it isn't going to snow. Your only problem would be going over the mountain south of Manchester and then Chattanooga. Also, you could always drive through Alabama and skip the mountains altogether.

Hopefully the gas shortage in Atlanta will be a distant memory by then!!
Working hard for that next WDW trip! December 2013
I've driven from north of Atlanta several times. Even though it is a short (8 hour) trip for us I still prefer to fly.
I almost forgot....when in SC, along the 95 corridor, be sure to stop at Maurice’s Famous BBQ. It's located at exit 98 Santee, SC on the west side of 95. The address for all you GPS users is 263 Britain Street Santee, SC 29142. You'll see a few signs for it along the way some of the best BBQ we have ever had. It sure beats the fast food joints!

Last trip down we found that the BP stations were by far the best of the rest for ease of access and cleanliness.
Lastly we had to cancell our trip this year...but we will be there next year!!
