Thread: Southwest Carry On Limit

    Southwest Carry On Limit

I have searched through previous southwest threads and haven't seen this asked. How many bags can you carry on? I have a backpack and a small rolling suitcase that I always bring, in the past I have been allowed to bring both, but I think I read somewhere on the website that you are only allowed one carry on now...is this true? Will I have to check my bags? I hate checking, I have had my luggage lost and damanged several times and would like to avoid that by not checking them...help!

It depends on how much stuff you have in the backpack. You're allowed one carry-on and one small personal item by federal regulation. If the backpack is too large to hold in your lap or fit under the seat, you are probably going to need to check one of them.

Here's the rules from the Southwest website:

You should be fine. I double checked the Southwest website, and the contract of carriage says you are allowed 1 carry-on baggage AND 1 smaller personal-type bag. Backpacks are specifically mentioned in the list of things allowed and the other suitcase should be no larger than 10 in. X 16 in. X 24 in.

It does state the backpack should be small enough to stow in an overhead bin or under the seat.

    Hope that helps.
