    Happy 53rd "Re-Dedication" Day - July 17th, 2008

Well, the Orange County Register has helped me out with some new information....

    http://ocresort.freedomblogging.com/...ears/#more-846

July 17, 1955: Grand opening of Disneyland. July 18 is the grand opening for the general public.

July 18, 1960: Disneyland celebrates its 5th Birthday on July 18 with a 5-foot-tall Birthday Cake.

July 17, 1965: Disneyland presents the Tencennial Re-Dedication Day featuring the Disneyland Tencennial Celebration Parade.

This information makes it crystal clear, that Disneyland's Birthday is on July 18th!, and that in 1965, Disney did have a "Re-Dedication" day on a Saturday (July 17th), but it looks like that was done since they were premiering a new Summer Parade and wanted to have it start on Saturday instead of Sunday....

Well, hope to see some of you at around 4 PM for Flag Retreat and the "Re-Dedication" ceremony in Town Square.

And of course, tomorrow, Friday, July 18th at Noon at the Hub in celebration of Disneyland's 53'rd official Birthday!

And there is some more documentation talking about why July 18th is Disneyland's true Birthday at the following links...

can I ask why folks are on such a mission to push the 18th as the REAL birthday, open to the public, etc. Disneyland's history is full of slight changes and myths - and this simple one of keeping it on the 17th seems rather benign to me.

it just seems like for some folks it's as bad as Watergate or other large conspiracies... it comes up every single year. No offense, you can have opinions, but so much energy is spent on it I was just wondering what the goal was.

I just got back from the park and crowds were extremely light getting in at 8:15ish. My DD and I got in purchased my 53rd birthday watch and were sitting down at Storytellers by 8:45. All the CM's had 53rd Birthday buttons on and there was a sign entering the park saying that the rededication speach would be done at 4:40pm (I think that was the time, I didn't stop and read it I just walked by).

There was a line for Disneyana but not a crazy amount of people.

    Have fun if you go!

How does July 17, 1955: Grand opening of Disneyland or anything else in that article make it crystal clear that Disneyland's Birthday is on July 18th? According to the article the birthday has been celebrated on the 17th every year except for the 5th.

Right, like the whole "year and a day" myth. It's harmless, and frankly, if the Disney company wants to decide that this is the day they will celebrate the anniversary (should it even be called a "birthday" since nobody gave birth?) on July 17th, then why does anyone else care.

It's like that group who insist on celebrating Christmas in June. They may have a case, but good luck convincing the rest of the world to follow suit.

    Happy Birthday DIsneyland!

The crowds got a little heavier closer to 12 noon. Main street was quite busy and the crowds coming in from the parking structure were strong (not huge, but strong). I suspect many locals will come out this evening to visit - so get your f fastpasses early.

I wish I was there to celebrate the birthday.

Of course, I wish I was there all the time.

My friend was there on July 17th, 1955 and still has the ticket. It is one of his most cherished possessions. As far as I'm concerned, Disneyland is always a celebration!

Maybe nobody gave birth, but it was definitely Walt's baby.

Tinkspapa...you have a lot of years on your list. Was it July 22 every one of those years?

As far as the July 17th versus 18th as the official birthday, I think they had the 18th as one of the official birthdays because that was the first day it was open to the public. The 17th was the grand opening, but invitation only. People made counterfeit tickets to the public, so it became the official first day.

I got there a little before 8 and was disappointed that they did not open the gates until 8. The park was not that crowded in the morning and I went over at 10 to check out midway mania for the first time. I came back a little after 11 and stayed until 3. All in all, I would say that park was averagely crowded for the summer.

The thing that I was most disappointed in was the attitude of the cast members. Most of them were not that excited about the birthday. One cast member suggested that a lot of the summer help don't have that much invested in the park. Hmm.

I had a great day and Happy Birthday Disneyland.

Well I actually did give birth on July 17, 2007. We celebrated my son's first birthday today at Disneyland. We did the "Happiest Birthdays on Earth" and we had a blast! His little face just lit up when he saw Mickey & Minnie. My husband & I are considering doing this every year as long as he lets us. I just love that my favorite guy shares a birthday with my most favorite place in the world!

Happy 53rd Birthday Disneyland and Happy 1st Birthday Xavier!

    LOL!

It was a blast seeing so many of you this morning. So much fun that I lost track of time and (literally) had to run to make it to costuming so I could clock in on time! Thanks to Tinkermommy and her DD for finding me later on SBL! I had fun taking you around the canal (twice...).
