Disney Film Knockoffs
I was in Targe` the other day, and I saw some cheap Disney knockoff DVD's... I guess the stories are public domain, so it isn't like they are stealing disney's films, but the animation is almost the exact same, like the Alladin cover looks like the animation could be from the disney film...(not really, but at a quick glance...) but the Genie is yellow...no credits or anything like that, I am just wondering what the take is on this? Opinions?

Convicted cheese smuggler
It's just like everything else, people want to make a copy of something sucessfull. Look at the toy clones. Do they undercut the price as well? If not then they are probably going on the confusion factor to trick people into buying it.

I've seen these cheesy knock-offs and always wondered, "What kind of idiot is suckered in by these things?!"

Probably the kind of idiot that does a mental calculation that combined three year olds who won't know the difference with $3.99.

I'm not sure I understand the term "cheap Disney knockoffs". The stories aren't original to Disney, and versions of the stories were made way before Disney made theirs, and just because Disney made theirs doesn't mean others aren't allowed to do more. Others just wouldn't be able to use some of the qualities that are unique to the Disney versions. I've seen all kinds of DVDs of stories that Disney also turned into an animated film, and I would never confuse them with the Disney versions as they animation style is so different. And as Alex pointed out, a small child probably won't care much which version they're seeing.

The reason it bothers me is that some sheister is OBVIOUSLY trying to cash in on the fact that Disney makes some really good movies. They copy the name and general look, then scam as much cash as they can from ignorant consumers. Do you think they'd make a bargain-basement version of Aladdin if Disney didn't do it first?
As for small children not knowing what they're seeing, all I know is that my niece and nephew will watch Disney movies all day long, over and over. They've gotten a couple of other companies' tapes which don't even hold their interest one time through.
Don't sell kids short--even at a young age, QUALITY counts!

Well they are riding the coatails of Disney's success, but those stories are public domain. Disney got their money on them, I see no problem with someone else trying to gleen a little after Disney did their harvest. Most people will know the difference, and some who can't afford the real thing can get the immitation if they want. Frankly I don't know why some one would want to try to compete with Disney on the same story, but to each his own. This is a good reason for Disney to create original stories like Lion King.

Well, mostly original anyway.

You are right. The plot of "The Lion King" is almost completely stolen from Shakespeare...

I can't belive I didn't notice that!
Well, at least it wasn't a well known fairytail!
I use to watch Kimba when I was a kid. It was followed by speed racer if I recall. I still never noticed the similaries, but that was a looong time ago.

Funny, isn't this the very attitude we often flame Disney itself for espousing??

If you choose to equate small children to Disney customers, then I suppose that's your point to make, but I don't agree with that comparison.
And in some cases, I do agree that there are things Disney fanatics carry on about that the normal consumer might not notice, but then I've also seen Disney fanatics disregard things that a normal customer enjoys, so go figure.
