The Disneyland Dork

Disneyland!

I’ve admitted many times to those who really know me that I’m a confirmed Disneyland Dork. I absolutely love the place. It’s been going on 2 years since I’ve visited the park, and yet “the happiest place on earth” beckons me to return, much to my wife’s chagrin. And truth is, my wife Karen has been there more than I have. We have another tentative visit planned for late September of this year. Karen always supports my obsession with the place, but she wants me to keep in mind that there are other places of interest to check out for vacation other than another trip to Disneyland. But you know something…..if I were to live out the rest of my days only going to Disneyland on vacation every once in a while, and didn’t take time to go on a cruise or see Hawaii, then would I regret it? No!

So what keeps me wanting to go back to Disneyland? I’ve asked that question of myself many, many times. And I really can’t put a finger on it. It’s not to return to childhood or a recapturing of my youth….I think it’s more the feeling I have when I’m there. When you’re there, if you look around, most everyone is HAPPY. I know it’s completely selfish of me to want to go there, and my sister Sue is no different. She’s been there many more times than any of us. In fact, if you were to add up all of our collective visits to Disneyland, I don’t think they would outnumber Sue’s visits there. And she’s always the one to suggest we go back… ideally as a family…a tradition that started in May 1991, following my brother Karry’s death. Mom and Dad used his life insurance proceeds and took us all to Disneyland. We’ve gone back several times as a family since. In 2005, we decided again to go back for the 50th anniversary of the Park, and asked Mom and Dad if they were interested in going with us. Mom immediately jumped on board with the idea, however Dad’s exact words were “I’ve had enough of that.” That 2005 trip ended up being Mom’s last one. And I’m glad she went with us.

I’ve never seen my son Austin more excited to go than he is this year. It could be that his wife Chelsea is also going with him, and he wants to share the Park with her. My son Taylor has no desire to go back, and has made the declaration that he will not go back until he has kids of age to take there. I think daughter McKell wants to go, however feels guilty going without her husband Zack, who’ll be in Afghanistan at the time we plan on going. Daughter Katelan’s planning on an Alaskan cruise in June with some friends, but she tentatively still wants to go with us in late September to the Park.

However it all turns out, I’m looking forward to the restrains of “Psst! Avast there! It be too late to alter course, mateys. And there be plundering pirates lurkin' in ev'ry cove, waitin' to board. Sit closer together and keep your ruddy hands in board. That be the best way to repel boarders. And mark well me words, mateys: Dead men tell no tales! Ye come seekin' adventure with salty old pirates, eh? Sure you've come to the proper place. But keep a weather eye open, mates, and hold on tight. With both hands, if you please. Thar be squalls ahead, and Davy Jones waiting for them what don't obey…”.
