Disney announces animation slate through 2012

Rate this Entry
I see that Disney has just announced the complete slate of animated features from now through the end of 2012. Four from Walt Disney Animation Studios and six from Pixar. Plus two more Pixar films in the release of the 3-D editions of the first two Toy Story films.

Oh, yeah. There'll also be four dreck-to-video Disney Fairies movies.

I've got to wonder how the WDAS folks feel, with Pixar films outnumbering theirs 2-to-1 over the next four-plus years (including the re-releases). Pixar gets every one of the coveted early summer release dates, and the WDAS films get all but one of the Christmas dates. That's an average of one new Pixar film every eight months (one every six months if you include the re-releases), while "Disney" films average one every 15 months.

Is this a sign of weakening confidence in WDAS? Hyper-focus on Pixar, just as there seems to be in the parks? If there's anybody out there who knows, please let me know.

Meanwhile, I'm just thrilled to finally see The Princess and the Frog and Rapunzel finally get official release dates.

More thoughts later.

While it seems stacked in Pixar's favor, I'd rather see Feature Animation release quality rather than quantity. Take a step back and focus efforts on releasing some new classics.
