Originally this post was to have been focused on Rock n Roll Las Vegas and the cool things that Competitor did for the Legacy Runners (one who has run all five of the events) of which I am one. Unfortunately, they didn’t do a thing for Legacies but I believe their resources were put to better use elsewhere as they were hosting not one but two half marathons in a single day – San Antonio, TX and Las Vegas, NV. And for 78 daring folks, running those two races became a once-in-a-lifetime challenge.
My good friend Runner Bob was one of the lucky folks who ‘doubled down’ and it took quite the logistics to make it happen. He flew into San Antonio on Saturday and prepped there for the Sunday morning race. The weather Sunday morning in San Antonio was miserable – 75 degrees and 100% humidity. Nasty conditions. But in order to make the shuttle to the airport (provided by Competitor), Runner Bob had to finish the half in 2:30 or less. He surprised himself by hitting the time on the nose and made the bus which was filled with hyper, sweaty runners. The excitement of what they were attempting made for a fun trip to the airport.
Once at the airport, the runners boarded a Southwest flight to Las Vegas with fingers crossed for an on-time departure. With an arrival of 1:10 p.m., Runner Bob and the rest of the challenge runners had a three-hour window to get to the hotel, catch their breath, and then head out to run another half at 4:30 p.m. Crazy. But Runner Bob did it and is the proud owner of a very special two-sided medal with San Antonio on one side and Las Vegas on the other. Add in the half marathon finisher’s medals from both races as well as his Rock Legend Heavy Medal (for competing seven RnR events in a calendar year) and he was weighed down quite nicely with hardware. Getting through security at the airport on Monday might be a challenge!
The opportunity to run the double half marathons was a chance to test what one is capable of doing which is why we do events like the Goofy and the upcoming Dopey. Given that RnR San Antonio is moving to December and RnR Las Vegas is remaining in November, there may not be another chance to double like that again. For Runner Bob and the other 77 runners who completed the double they now have a place in RnR history.
So here’s to challenges and awesome clanking medals and very sore legs. Congrats to all the RnR Double Finishers. I know we’ll see many of you in WDW this January for the Dopey Challenge!
We’ve got a lot of miles ahead of us this week. Here’s to continuing the journey to Dopey and to a successful training week.
