Pat E. Cake Gets Iced

Rate this Entry
According to the Entertainment Department, March 17 will be the last day for the “My Disneyland Birthday Party” at the Plaza Inn.

Its host, the Pat E. Cake face character, will be retired.

Reportedly, money is to blame. Managers in the Foods Department argue that the tables reserved for the birthday parties could be more profitably utilized by paying guests eating at the Plaza Inn.

I actually think this is a good idea. For some reason the Birthday thing felt so contrived - especially when other locations offered (or used to offer) a special cake for birthdays. I just never thought "creating your own birthday cake at Disneyland" was so novel and a good way to use resources - though for the life of me I can't fathom how much money it actually cost. The food dept will be on the hook to show they were right by proving increased revenue per table and per hour.

Thinking about it - Plaza Inn is quite spacious counting all of the outside tables. I wonder if it also could mean some hedge trimming is on the way...

I always wondered why such a large dining space - and in such a nice location - was so poorly utilized. I never saw more than one or two small parties in there at any given time, and all that empty seating. It'd be great if they did bring the hedges down a bit to make the area more included into the hub. Lord... they'll start selling fireworks viewing packages, won't they?

I'd think it should be possible for Pat E. Cake to celebrate birthdays and share space with Plaza Inn diners. Oh well.

We did this many years ago for my son's birthday. We really enjoyed it. The cake however, was so dry, beyond dry. I have some great pictures of the fun. It wasn't too expensive then, I think $16.00 per person. That price included the cake with the decorations and fruit punch in a souvenir cup. I still have two of the cups.

I have to agree, I like this idea. That character with the plush cake on his head making noise as guests walked toward Tomorrowland was annoying.
