Last night at the media preview party in the Magic Kingdom's New Fantasyland, months of preparations and weeks of promotion paid off as a dragon soared over the crowd, drawing oohs and aahs. We captured most of the flight on video, and then got a follow-up commentary from the man behind Disney's dragon promotion, Gary Buchanan. At this time, there is no word on whether the dragon will make return appearances or if it was just a one-night-only appearance. It worked so well, though, that it would be a shame not to have it make a return engagement. Enjoy the video!

In talking about this week's media event in yesterday's Walt Disney World Resort Update...

In talking about this week's media event in yesterday's Walt Disney World Resort Update, I noted: "It's quite possible that there will be more, but a final schedule is still proving elusive. We've been told that things are still changing but that we'll get a final schedule when we arrive on Wednesday." Well, I got a "Snapshot Itinerary" yesterday afternoon, and there are already adjustments being made to my expectations.

Some things that I didn't expect:

While Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow will have its official grand opening on Thursday, it will not be part of the media event

The What's New/What's Next presentation for Friday morning has been condensed into a half-hour Around Our World presentation that appears to have no new announcements at this point (though surprises have been known to happen).

So what are the plans? Here's what I've been told (or have heard about through other sources):
Wednesday

New Fantasyland will be closed to the public during the day to prepare for the grand opening events.

After a 10-minute welcome from Tom Staggs in the PhilharMagic Theater, the media will have a preview of New Fantasyland from 7-10 p.m. (the park closes to the public at 7, with a showing of Wishes at 6). There will be special media showings of Celebrate the Magic and Holiday Wishes starting at 9:30.

Thursday

The media will have early-morning access to New Fantasyland, including the official ribbon-cutting ceremony in Belle's Village at 9:00.

The official Grand Opening Celebration will take place on the Cinderella Castle forecourt stage at 10:00, after which the land will be open to all.

Media can attend a panel session at 11.

Future World East at Epcot will close to the public at 3:00 for the media event.

From 7:00-9:30 p.m., Future World East will play host to the Test Track Ac-Celebration Party.

Friday

At 9:00 a.m., the Around Our World presentation will take place at Downtown Disney West Side.

There will be a media preview of Splitsville Luxury Lanes from 9:45 a.m. to noon.

I'm sure that there will be more surprises in store. There's no word on whether the much-discussed "Disney Dragon" will make its appearance at the Wednesday night party, the Thursday morning ribbon-cutting, the Grand Opening Celebration, or some combination thereof.

What do I expect to hear about at the Around Our World presentation?

Probably the latest promotions from Disney Cruise Line, Disney Vacation Club, and Adventures by Disney.

The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow

Pandora: The World of Avatar, rumored to be beginning site preparation in the current Camp Minnie-Mickey in January.

The Limited Time Magic promotion.

Promotion for (with no new information about) Princess Fairytale Hall and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

The new Tangled-themed restrooms being built between "it's a small world" and the Haunted Mansion.

Celebrate the Magic.

Maybe the new interactive queue coming to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

That's about it.

What do I wish that we would hear about at the presentation?

What's happening with the launch of the full Next Generation Initiative next year.

New Imagineering technologies coming to the parks.

A new attraction/land to be developed with Star Wars theming.

A new attraction/land to be developed with Marvel theming.

We won't likely hear a word of that, though.

In either case, follow me this week on Twitter (@MPMark) and Facebook for live updates from the media event. And be sure to watch this space as well for longer-form thoughts from the event.

And finally, if you'll be at Walt Disney World this weekend, be sure to join me and other readers on Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. at Disney's Hollywood Studios for a MousePlanet Meet-up at the Osborne Lights. We'll meet by the faux subway station on the Streets of America near the central intersection and chat while we wait for the Osborne Lights to turn on. We'll enjoy the snow, the music, and the dancing lights together. Hope to see you there!

In this week's Update, I shared reports of major storm damage aboard the Disney Fantasy and concern about Castaway Cay, Disney's private island in the Bahamas. A story on the CNN website had reported:

Water in the pool shown in the video was emptied into the surrounding areas and into some hallways. The two upscale restaurants (Palo and Remy) had major damage. One exterior door was destroyed near our cabin.

On Wednesday evening, Disney Cruise Line spokeperson Rebecca Peddie told MousePlanet that things were not as bad as the story had made it seem:

At this point in time, everything is business as usual for us. The Disney Dream called on our private island, Castaway Cay, today. We cleaned up some storm debris that washed up on the shores and replaced some sand, but overall the island was fine.

The Disney Fantasy had some minor, cosmetic damage such as cracked windows and broken furniture that was addressed. The ship left Port Canaveral for a seven-night Western Caribbean itinerary on Saturday, October 27, a little later than usual and as a result missed its stop in Grand Cayman on Monday. However, its scheduled itinerary resumed yesterday.

Is the Walt Disney World Moms Panel Looking For You?

For the sixth year, the Walt Disney World Moms Panel is conducting a search to find moms (and dads)...

For the sixth year, the Walt Disney World Moms Panel is conducting a search to find moms (and dads) for next year's panel. Members of the panel participate in Disney's online forum, answering questions about planning a Disney trip.

Note that, while the panel says "moms" and "dads," you don't necessarily have to have kids to be a member. You just need to have good Disney planning skills and spend a lot of time helping people to plan their own vacations.

Last year, the panel welcomed its first runDisney Mom. Among other specialties, this year the panel is looking for a Sports Team Mom with experience in planning team trips to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and Walt Disney World; the trips could be anything from football, basketball, and soccer to gymnastics, cheerleading, or dance, and anything in between. Also still in demand are bilingual and international members. Second languages that Disney is interested in include Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

The application period opened Monday at the Moms Panel search site, and will close at midnight Friday night or when 14,000 applications are received, whichever comes first. You'll have to answer some basic demographic qualification and Disney trivia questions, write an essay of up to 100 words describing your Disney Park planning experience and how you help others plan, and select a primary area of expertise from Walt Disney World Resort, Disney Cruise Line, Aulani/Adventures by Disney, Disney Vacation Club, Disneyland Resort, runDisney, or ESPN Wide World of Sports Competitions. Once you select a specialty, you'll be asked a few questions about that specialty.

If you want to make it through to the next round of the process, you'll obviously need to get the Disney trivia and destination questions correct, but the 100-word essay will be the key to moving on. You'll really need to sell your story and your expertise, your commitment, your personality, and your attitude.

If you make the first cut, there will be additional questions and submissions, eventually leading to a final round of phone interviews. If you ace the phone interview and get selected to join the 2013 Walt Disney World Moms Panel, you'll need to be able to attend a training session at Walt Disney World in December 2012.

Each of the Moms Panel members that I've met have been unanimous in stating that they love participating on the panel, and that it's a wonderful experience. The folks running the panel are great, too!

So what are you waiting for? Get your application in before all of the spots are filled!

Reservations open for Be Our Guest Restaurant today!

Warm up your dialing fingers (but not your mouse, quite yet)! Phone reservations for dinner at the soon-to-open Be Our Guest Restaurant in New Fantasyland open at 7 a.m. Eastern Time today. You can make reservations for dates from November 19 (opening day) through February 16 (180 days from now) by calling the Walt Disney World Dining Line at 407-WDW-DINE (407-939-3463).

If you'd like to use the nice interface at the Walt Disney World website, you'll need to wait until this Wednesday, August 22.

At lunch, you'll order using ordering kiosks similar to those in use at Pecos Bill's Cafe, with choices such as Croque Monsieur, Grilled Steak Sandwich, and Tuna Niçoise Salad. There will be staffed cashier stations in case you need to pay with cash or if you need to make a special request. Once you order, either by kiosk or by cashier, have a seat. A castle servant will deliver your meal on actual china. There are no paper plates here.

At dinner, the meal is traditional table service featuring such entrees as Rotisserie Rock Hen, Grilled Strip Steak, Sauteed Shrimp and Scallops, and Ratatouille Confit Byaldi. You can take a look at the complete menu offerings online (lunch menu and dinner menu).

While the demand for the new restaurant is expected to rival that for Cinderella's Royal Table, at least initially, the location will still only cost one quick-service credit for lunch and one table-service credit for dinner on the Disney Dining Plan.

The food is French-inspired—"After all, Miss, this is France!" You'll be able to eat in one of three dining rooms. The West Wing, with Beast's enchanted rose, should be a favorite, as should the Ballroom, ripped straight from perhaps the movie's most iconic scene. The Rose Gallery is probably a bit of a wild card until proven out.

So if you want to get a reservation at this new location that's sure to be high in demand, get on the phone at 7:00 this morning, or at least as early as you can. Good luck!

New Fantasyland to open December 6 at Magic Kingdom; previews start November 19

At long last, the waiting is almost over. We finally have a date. The bulk of the New Fantasyland...

At long last, the waiting is almost over. We finally have a date. The bulk of the New Fantasyland expansion at the Magic Kingdom park at Walt Disney World will officially open on December 6. There will be passholder and DVC previews and likely some previews for all guests starting November 19.

Included in the new section of the land opening later this year are:

Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid;

Be Our Guest Restaurant;

Enchanted Tales with Belle;

Ariel’s Grotto;

Gaston’s Tavern; and

Bonjour! Village Gifts.

The ride portion of the Little Mermaid attraction will be identical to the version of the ride at Disney California Adventure park, though the queue and entire exterior theme will be completely different. The attraction will have Fastpass. Enchanted Tales with Belle is a plussed-up meet-and-greet that is expected to be so spectacular that it will also open with a Fastpass entry. Ariel's Grotto will be your place to meet and greet the popular aquatic princess.

Be Our Guest Restaurant will be a completely new concept in Disney dining. The location will provide enhanced quick service at lunch, then turn into a table service location with reservations for dinner. It is likely that Be Our Guest may require as early reservations as Cinderella's Royal Table. Gaston's Tavern will provide another dining location in previously-sparse Fantasyland. Bonjour! Village Gifts will be the area's merchandise location.

The first part of Storybook Circus opened earlier, featuring the re-themed Barnstormer featuring Goofy as The Great Goofini, the double Dumbo spinner attraction, and the Carol Pacific railroad station. The last pieces of Storybook Circus, Pete's Silly Sideshow meet and greet location and Big Top Souvenirs, are expected to open before November.

Exact dates for Passholder and DVC previews have yet to be announced, but they will likely precede the previews for all guests. Keep your eyes open, and we'll keep you up to date as we find out the news.

After the big opening in December, the only remaining pieces of New Fantasyland (at least, those that have already been announced) will be Princess Fairytale Hall, a mega-princess meet and greet location, opening in 2013 and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, opening in 2014.

What do you think of this? Let us know in the comments below or on our MousePad discussion forums!

Magic Kingdom Rolls Out Free WiFi, Other Parks Coming Soon

Free guest WiFi was rolled out with no formal announcement at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom...

Free guest WiFi was rolled out with no formal announcement at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom park yesterday. Guests who connected to the "Disney-Guest" network and accepted Disney's terms of service were able to freely utilize the Internet using the service. While Disney has not responded to an inquiry regarding the details of the service, MousePlanet was provided with a statement that "WiFi is on scheduled [sic] to be rolled out for all of our theme parks and DTD by early 2013." Free WiFi was recently rolled out at all resorts without fanfare, as well.

One thing to keep an eye on is whether Disney has actually been able to build out a network that will handle traffic from tens of thousands of guests in each park and still provide sufficient bandwidth that it's not swamped, resulting in insufficient bandwidth per user. That's likely the scenario already effecting Internet connectivity in the parks through cellular service providers. Disney will need a huge amount of bandwidth to accommodate its ultimate purposes here. If they've been able to accomplish that with this service, it could potentially reap a number of benefits for both guests and Disney:

Staying in the parks

Many guests are only able to visit Walt Disney World on the condition that they stay in touch with work or home, whether due to business requirements or family issues. With the notoriously bad cellular signal in the parks, it was difficult for guests to get to the Internet through their standard data plan, forcing those who need to stay in contact with home or work to leave the park periodically to access their email. With the WiFi service in place, guests should be able to stay in touch anywhere.

Social networking/free advertising

Many people today can't live without their Internet connection. Twitter, Facebook, and other social media become a way of life, and they're used to posting pictures and comments from everywhere. As noted above, the Internet connectivity in the parks (especially Magic Kingdom) is spotty at best. To give their guests the ability to post photos and more from the parks will both increase guest satisfaction and also provide free advertising, as live-tweeting or posting photos to Facebook as you travel around the park provides many more opportunities for others to see images of the parks and to hear of magical experiences. If a cast member makes a magical memory for a social media-connected guest, you can bet that all of their Twitter followers and Facebook friends will hear about it immediately.

Those are good reasons to add free Wifi, but there are really a couple of bigger reasons behind it, and they're on the way.

My Disney Experience

With the poor connectivity inside the parks, use of the Disney Mobile Magic app has been extremely difficult at times, especially for those not on Disney partner Verizon's network. Improved Internet access would make it much easier to use the app. That's important, because it'll soon be time to move up.

Word emerged a couple of days ago that a new mobile application called My Disney Experience will soon (as in possibly this month) be replacing the Mobile Magic app. The new app would supposedly include all of the current Mobile Magic functionality, plus have additional capabilities that will allow it to better integrate with Next Generation initiatives such as...

FastPass+

Walt Disney World ran a test of the FastPass+ system back in May. In that test, park guests selected a number of attractions in advance for which they received a set of virtual Fastpass tickets attached to an RFID card. They also received a list of times for which they could use the virtual Fastpass tickets. The new version will likely include smartphones and other mobile devices via the My Disney Experience app. With Disney resort room keys migrating to RFID cards (hold them up to the door, no need to insert anything) and so many packages that include tickets being sold, park passes attached to the RFID room cards will likely also be used. It's uncertain whether it would be possible for a guest to use both their room card and their smartphone to get additional FastPass+ return times.

Shrouded kiosks resembling the RFID scanning stations used in the last test have been appearing in the Magic Kingdom. The wraps may come off of those stations at the same time that My Disney Experience brings online FastPass+ to mobile devices.

With that, the Disney Next Generation experience will be one step closer to allowing you to make FastPass reservations for your entire trip before you leave your house.

What do you think? Will the Next Gen FastPass+ reservations system be a valuable tool for helping to plan out and schedule your Walt Disney World visit, or will it be another step toward removing spontaneity and fun from your trip? Good, bad, or both? Do you like the idea of improved WiFi connectivity in the parks, or would you prefer to be disconnected while enjoying your Disney experience? Voice your opinion in the comments below!

Just weeks after her husband's policy speech on Main Street, U.S.A. in the Magic Kingdom, First Lady Michelle Obama appeared at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World on Saturday. Mrs. Obama's appearance was in conjunction with the second anniversary of her "Let's Move" campaign to inspire kids and families to lead healthier and active lifestyles. Disney has tied into that campaign with the Disney Magic of Healthy Living program.
The event included hundreds of kids from Central Florida, who participated in physical fitness activities and learned a new dance, "The Platypus Walk" (themed to Disney's "Phineas and Ferb") to perform for the First Lady. The event got started with the singing of the national anthem and the pledge of allegiance. Florida Senator Bill Nelson then took the stage, welcomed the crowd, then performed 50 military push-ups to show how seriously he takes fitness.
Emcee Ernie D from Radio Disney then welcomed fitness guru Tony Horton to the stage. Horton led the hundreds of children in a series of high-energy exercises. Ernie D returned to the stage to welcome stars from Disney Channel and Disney XD programs and Rosero McCoy, the choreographer from Disney's "Shake It Up." McCoy then taught the approximately 800 kids the Platypus Walk, assisted by Disney Channel stars Debby Ryan, Roshon Fegan, Doc Shaw, Kelsey Chow, and Olivia Holt. After a couple of run-throughs, the group was joined onstage by the "Agent P" Perry the Platypus character for one last rehearsal.
The children then split into groups around the field, each group doing a different fitness activity. Mrs. Obama worked her way around to each group, participating with some. She appeared to really enjoy the modified tennis game and had to be encouraged by her entourage to move on to the next group. After visiting with each group, the First Lady left the field and headed back to Washington, D.C.
Like the President's visit last month, Mrs. Obama did not bring their daughters Sasha and Malia with her on her visit to Walt Disney World, perhaps proving that Disney Parks & Resorts are not just for kids.

In a session that showed off Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs' sense of humor and comfort...

In a session that showed off Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs' sense of humor and comfort in his new position, the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts presentation at the D23 Expo featured more details about some of the projects that we've already heard about, but no breaking news about new projects. From New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom to Fantasy Faire at Disneyland Park, from Aulani to Shanghai Disneyland, and the massive overhaul of Disney California Adventure, Staggs, Disney Imagineers and Disneyland President George Kalogridis provided interesting news and images of what's in the works.

At the same time, Staggs showed that, much as Walt Disney Company President and CEO Bob Iger was able to loosen up and appear much more comfortable on stage when he took over from Michael Eisner, Staggs loosened up tremendously from his on-stage appearances as Disney's Chief Financial Officer at shareholder meetings and more. Staggs' sense of humor was displayed throughout, and he seemed quite at ease in his new role.

The presentation opened with the next-generation Mickey Mouse with animated eyes and mouth, who sat in on drums with the D23 Orchestra. At the conclusion of the number, Mickey then introduced Staggs and then bantered with him. After bantering with Mickey, and sending him offstage, Staggs noted that he spent over a decade at Disney's Chief Financial Officer, and joked that presenting to D23 crowds was more fun than talking to Wall Street types. After paying tribute to Disney cast members and showing a funny video of Staggs trying his hand at a number of different roles at Disney's parks and ships, it was time to get to the meat of the presentation (which I'm sure that you're waiting for me to do).

We started out with Imagineering Chief Creative Executive Bruce Vaughn talking about New Fantasyland at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom park. He explained that the new wall being built across the middle of Fantasyland will help to thematically divide the Castle Courtyard from the Fantasy Forest, allowing the Imagineers to not worry about matching the castle courtyard theme beyond the wall.

While the ride portion itself will be identical to its California cousin, the outside theming of Ariel's Undersea Adventure will be tremendously different, in keeping with the Fantasyland location. Guests will stroll along the seashore on their way to the attraction queue. Once in the queue, guests will help Flounder and Scuttle on a scavenger hunt as they work their way to the attraction's entrance.

When guests meet Belle in her New Fantasyland cottage, there will be a new Audio-Animatronic Lumiere. The 2.5-foot-high character is one of the most difficult that Imagineering has ever had to construct, and is only possible due to the latest technology.

The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will blend thrill ride with dark ride, and is the first theme park attraction to be completely based on the Dwarfs. It is inspired by the scene of the mine cars racing through the mine. Many versions of the ride vehicles were created in a search for one that recreated the look and feel of the careening mine cars in the film. Vaughn showed a CGI rendering of a virtual ride-through of the attraction. The scenery was still very rough, but gave a great idea of what the overall tone of the ride will be. We'll have that video in the Walt Disney World Park Update this coming week.

Next up was Aulani. Aunty's Beach House will be the kids club. Adults can enjoy various spa treatments at the Laniwai ("Heavenly Waters") Spa. Teens will have their own spa and hangout called Painted Sky. There is also a pool, water slide, lazy river, beach, and more for relaxing enjoyment at the resort. The presentation opened with a performance of "Pearly Shells" by a Hawai'ian musical trio, a singer, and a children's chorus/hula troupe. While Imagineering Executive Designer and Vice President, Creative Joe Rohde is still busy getting Aulani ready for its debut on August 29, he gave a quick tour of the resort via video. At the end of the video, Staggs was wearing a Rohde-style earring—he wanted to make sure that there were pictures because Rohde didn't believe that he'd do it. Staggs then announced that they were so proud of the work that was done on Aulani that they wanted send a family at the event to Aulani to check it out. The lucky guest who found a D23 sticker on the underside of their chair was quickly met by a Disney representative to get their contact information.

Bob Weis, Imagineering Executive Vice-President, Creative was next up, providing a look at Shanghai Disneyland. Disney's partners, the Shanghai Shendi Group, are busy preparing the land. Once they're done, construction will begin. Disney has spent a lot of time working with the Chinese to select stories that are meaningful to the locals because they want to connect well with their Chinese guests. One example given was that there were originally plans to put a dragon in the dungeon, similar to the one at Disneyland Paris. However, since dragon lore is significant in China, and dragons are sometimes used to signify China itself, it was decided that it would not be appropriate to put a dragon in the dungeon and the idea was dropped.

Weis presented a new CGI rendering of castle. It's huge, with multiple interior floors of guest areas. There will be an integrated performance space on the first floor, along with a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. A restaurant is located on the second floor, and a ride on the third floor. A ride traveling through all of Fantasyland will actually be the first to go through a Disney castle.

Weis then stayed around to talk about Disney California Adventure park. Buena Vista Street will recreate Hollywood as it was when Walt Disney came to California. The street will end at the Carthay Circle Theater, which will house a restaurant being created by Napa Rose's Andrew Sutton. Red Car trolleys will run all the way down to the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

Kathy Mangum, Imagineering Executive Producer and Vice President, then came out to talk about Carsland. She shared some fresh pictures from the construction site, including Ramone's Body Shop (a merchandise location), Sally's Cozy Cone Hotel (a quick-service food location), and Luigi's Flying Tires, a new attraction based upon the old Flying Saucers attraction at Disneyland. She noted that she was on the site with John Lasseter this morning, and that they stood on the ride floor and turned the air on for the first time. The attraction will begin testing in a couple of weeks.

Two elements of the Cars world that were created but never included in the movie will get exposure in the new land. The original Radiator Spring was found by Stanley Steamer and was the reason the town grew up there. It will be recreated in Carsland. Also, Taillight Caverns features "stalaglites" that resemble car taillights.

One really fun feature is that the Carsland cast member costumes will feature a Hawai'ian style shirt with a pattern based on a Route 66-themed shirt selected by John Lasseter from his own personal collection.

Disneyland Resort President George Kalogridis was the last to join Staggs on stage. Kalogridis thanked the Disneyland Resort guests for being patient and understanding during the extreme makeover of Disney California Adventure. He then quickly reeled off a few things with minimal if any exposition. He mentioned that Disneyland was working on several ideas to enhance the guest experience, such as the opportunity to have dinner inside the Haunted Mansion with Imagineers, and the opportunity to attend a tea party with your favorite princesses. He also mentioned the return of the Tahitian Terrace and "America the Beautiful" in CircleVision 360. He also quickly mentioned that Imagineers are working on an expansion of Club 33, but said that they won't have anything further to share on that until 2012.

Kalogridis then went into a description of the expansion of Fantasyland at Disneyland Park. Carnation Plaza Gardens will be subsumed into Fantasy Faire. The central point of this new area will be the Tangled Tower, which will be the site of interactive entertainment throughout the day. Princess Fairy Tale Hall, like the coming location of the same name at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, will be a multi-princess meet-and-greet location. Fantasy Faire will also include food and merchandise locations. The current evening entertainment at Carnation Plaza Gardens will remain, taking place in the new Fantasy Faire. It will be interesting to see how the swing dancers look while they're dancing the night away in the Fantasyland-themed location.

At the conclusion, Mickey Mouse came out for one more number with the band, and the session was over.

There was no mention of the Disney Fantasy or the rumored Disney Vacation Club at the Grand Floridian Resort at Walt Disney World. Perhaps they were part of the thirty minutes that were shortened from the presentation. (It was originally scheduled for 90 minutes, then shortened to 60 minutes a few days ago.)

What part of the presentations were news to you, and what did you already know? Were you impressed by the presentation, or did you feel that it was ho-hum because there were no new projects announced? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Walt Disney World free dining offer released for dates through 2012

A new free dining offer has been released for Walt Disney World for dates through 2012 with...

A new free dining offer has been released for Walt Disney World for dates through 2012 with bookings available starting today at 7 a.m. EDT. From now through October 29, guests can book free dining packages for select arrival dates from October 2, 2011, through March 31, 2012.

There will be no exclusive period for Disney Visa cardholders for this offer, as there has been in the past.

The 2011 dates run from October 2 through December 17, with breaks for Columbus Day week, PGA Tournament week, Veteran's Day week/Jersey week, Thanksgiving week, and Pop Warner week. Available arrival dates are:

<strike>October 2-6</strike> October 2-8

October 23-November 5 limited availability October 23-29

<strike>November 13-18</strike> November 13-19

November 27-December 3

December 11-17

Update: We have now been advised that the October 23-29 dates are apparently available online, but not via phone.

2012 dates run from January 8 through March 31 (the end of Disney's second fiscal quarter), with blockouts for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday week, and several popular spring break weeks. Available arrival dates are:

January 8-14

January 22-February 4

February 12-18

March 4-10

March 25-31

August 19-September 29 (Canada residents only)

Contrary to our speculation on Monday, most of the availability periods do indeed run from Sunday through Saturday. Package eligibility is based on arrival date and is valid for the length of the reservation, so if you arrive on the last day before a blackout period and stay through a blackout week, you'll still have the free dining package for the length of your stay. Conversely, if you arrive on a Saturday that is the last day of the blackout, you will need to make a one-night reservation and then book the free dining package starting on your second day, during the availability period.

Guests staying at value resorts will get the Quick Service Dining Plan for free, and guests at moderate or deluxe resorts will get the standard Disney Dining Plan for free. As with all packages, park tickets must be part of the package. Packages are available for a minimum of 3 nights and a maximum of 14 nights.

No group rates or other discounts apply. The offer excludes suites, campsites and 3-bedroom villas. Advance reservations are required. The free dining plan excludes gratuities and alcoholic beverages. Children ages 3–9 must order from children’s menu if available. Some table service restaurants may already have limited or no availability.

Grand Gatherings were introduced in late 2003, and were part of the "Magical Gatherings" promotion. It now seems that the need to promote special events designed for groups traveling together has passed, and that any special event planning will be a la carte from now on.

Late yesterday, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs announced some changes...

Late yesterday, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs announced some changes at the top of the division's leadership structure on the heels of Al Weiss' retirement announcement just two weeks ago. While speculation was that a reorganization would be coming, nobody really thought that the movement would be so swift, as Weiss' retirement isn't effective until November.

This reorganization of the Parks & Resorts division follows the November 2005 shakeup where then-Parks & Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo moved Weiss to the President of Worldwide Operations position and shuffled other jobs and the "One Disney" reorganization of February 2009. These latest changes basically make Weiss a minister-without-portfolio for the remainder of his tenure at Disney. Most of his duties will go to Meg Crofton, who becomes President of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations, U.S. and France, as well as retaining her position as President of Walt Disney World Resort. In her new position, Disneyland Resort President George Kalogridis and Euro Disney SAS President Philippe Gas will both report to Crofton.

Karl Holz, previously in charge of Disney Cruise Line and New Vacation Options, has added Disney Vacation Club to his portfolio and moved out from being under the Parks leadership to report directly to Staggs. Bill Ernest will continue as President of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations Asia, and now report to Staggs instead of Weiss.

Serving two masters—or at least reporting to two bosses—are Jeff Vahle, Executive Vice President for Facilities Operations Services, and Erin Wallace, Executive Vice President for Operations Integration. Wallace, who replaced as Executive Vice President for Operations at Walt Disney World prior to moving to her current position in 2009, will add Revenue Management to her portfolio. Vahle and Wallace will report to both Crofton and Ernest.

The Sales and Marketing groups will be combined under Leslie Ferraro, who will serve as Executive Vice President for Global Marketing and Sales. As part of the consolidation, Randy Garfield, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Travel Operations for Disney Destinations and President of The Walt Disney Travel Company, will report to Ferraro.

Crofton and Holz will join Staggs' Executive Committee. Ferraro already serves on this committee, and Weiss will remain on the committee until his retirement. Also currently on the committee and remaining there are: Nick Franklin, Executive Vice President for Next Generation Experience; Kristin Nolt Wingard, Senior Vice President for Worldwide Public Affairs; Jim Hunt, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Julie Hodges, Senior Vice President Human Resources, Diversity and Inclusion; Craig Russell, Chief Design and Project Delivery Executive for Walt Disney Imagineering; and Bruce Vaughn, Chief Creative Executive for Walt Disney Imagineering.

So a few people are changing their responsibilities. But what does this all mean?

The moves are a big indication of the increasing importance of the Disney vacation options that don't involve theme parks. Holz, who has done a tremendous job with the Disney Cruise Line and Adventures by Disney (and previously had served as Senior Vice President of Operations at Walt Disney World and as Chief Executive Officer of Euro Disney SCA, the holding company that runs Disneyland Paris Resort) adds the Disney Vacation Club to give him command of all vacation operations not related to theme parks. Disney Vacation Club President Jim Lewis now reports to Holz instead of Crofton.

Holz will be responsible for the growth of these independent operations, which will continue to spread the Disney vacation experience away from the parks. As Staggs noted in his announcement, "Karl will be responsible for creating consistent and engaging guest experiences as they expand to new markets and destinations outside the berms of our theme parks.… These operations are an important driver of growth in our segment and a critical part of our efforts to build upon and broaden Disney’s reputation for delivering magical experiences to our guests, both inside and outside the berm."

The changes also strengthen a split between the Western world and the Eastern world. Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris Resorts all report up to Crofton, who will doubtless try to standardize as many policies and procedures as makes sense across those resorts. However, Crofton will also be charged with preserving the uniqueness of each resort. Staggs noted that "Meg understands and respects the unique heritage and characteristics of each of our theme park resort locations, which gives me great confidence in her ability to fulfill this role while preserving and enhancing what makes each of our properties so special in their own right."

Meanwhile, Ernest will have control over Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and the under-construction Shanghai Disneyland Resort, as well as support operations for Tokyo Disney Resort (which is wholly-owned by the Oriental Land Company). As the Eastern world has a different cultural approach that is less-familiar with Disney products, effective operation of those resorts will require a different approach, and so Ernest is being given freedom from the Western approach being taken by Crofton.

At the same time, those areas that are unaffected by culture, Facilities Operation, Operations Integration, and Revenue Management, will report to both Crofton and Ernest, making those standardized services available to all Disney theme park resorts.

Tying marketing with sales makes a great deal of sense, as the two organizations are strongly related. Tighter integration will allow for better information flow between the two, making each one more effective and efficient.

This is Staggs' first major structural change since he took over as Chairman of Parks and Resorts in a job swap with Jay Rasulo, who took Staggs' former position as Walt Disney Company Chief Financial Officer. From my seat, Rasulo is better suited for his current job, while Staggs shows the flexibility and understanding to excel at both positions, and has made a number of smart moves already in his 18 months in his new job, most notably toning down the former princess-and-fairy focus of Magic Kingdom park's New Fantasyland.

These moves bring the Parks & Resorts operations more in line with Staggs' approach, which will make it easier for him to manage the division in the manner that he wants it to run. If his first 18 months is any indication, this will turn out very well in the long term.

This year's Walt Disney World ticket price hikes come earlier than usual

Perhaps in an attempt to grab a little extra income at the expense of the large summer crowds, Walt...

Perhaps in an attempt to grab a little extra income at the expense of the large summer crowds, Walt Disney World (and Disneyland) announced a ticket price hike Friday, June 10, effective on Sunday, June 12. For years, price hikes for Walt Disney World were announced in January; in 2006, with a second price hike in that calendar year, price hikes moved to the first Sunday in August. Last year, it was pushed back one week. This year, the date was moved up eight weeks, providing a last-minute price jolt to those summer visitors who had not already bought their tickets. It appears, though, that the strategy of announcing at the end of the day, effective two days later, is still apparently the preferred method of implementing the increase.

One-day, one-park tickets are up $3 for adults, t $85, and up $5 for children, to $79 (last year, the increase was $3 for adults, $6 for children). The Park Hopper and Water Park Fun & More options have both risen $1 to $55 (vs. $1 last year). Adult 10-day base tickets are up $29 to $291 (vs. $19 last year), with unexpiring 10-day tickets with both Park Hopper and Water Park Fun & More options jumping $43 to $626 (vs. $27 last year). 10-day base tickets for children are up $33 to $272 (vs. 29 last year), with their tricked-out price with all options leaping $47 to $607 (vs. $37 last year). The only price drop is in the cost of adding the Park Hopper option to a one-day pass, which drops to $35. Please note that all ticket prices in this story do not reflect the additional 6.5 percent sales tax.

Mid-year ticket price hikes provide a double boost: It provides a nice last-minute boost to the fiscal fourth-quarter earnings, and in this case a couple of weeks of third-quarter earnings (Disney's fiscal year ends at the end of September), and it puts the new prices out there in time for the publication cycle for guide books and for the start of booking for the following year's packages. With the new prices in effect, look for Disney Dining Plan prices to be locked in and resort prices to be set soon so that booking can be opened for all 2012 travel packages a little early this year.

If you'd like to compare the prices below to last year's prices, you can do that here.

Theme park annual pass prices are also increasing. The Adult Annual Pass is up $20 to $519 and a child AP is up $28 to $478 (vs. $10 and $18 increases last ear). Adult Premium Annual Pass increased $20 to $649, while the child PAP rose $31 to $598 (vs. $10 and $21). Florida resident Annual, Premium and Seasonal Passes are also rising. Renewal prices and DVC discount prices are not yet available, but they should be posted by Sunday.

Let's take a quick look at the incremental day-by-day costs:

Incremental Ticket Price (Adult/Child)

Day 1

Day 2

Day 3

Day 4

Day 5

$85/$79

$83/$76

$64/$59

$11/$10

$8/$8

Day 6

Day 7

Day 8

Day 9

Day 10

$8/$8

$8/$8

$8/$8

$8/$8

$8/$8

Looking at this chart, you can see that the majority of the costs are still contained in the first three days. After that, the incremental cost of adding a fourth day drops tremendously, and adding a fifth through tenth day is just $8 per day (though it was $5 last year). The increments have all risen this year, by anywhere between $1 and $3, but that's about it. The big buy-in is still swallowing the cost of the first three days.

One-day, one-park water park passes are up $3 to $49 for adults and up $1 to $41 for children. DisneyQuest has had a $1 jump, to $43 for adults and $37 for children. Wide World of Sports admission is up 94 cents for adults, to $13.55, while the children's price is still unchanged at $9.34. Tickets to Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba and annual passes for water parks and DisneyQuest are unchanged.

The price increase helps Disney to cover contractually-obligated raises to employees and other rising costs of operating the theme parks and resorts. To help combat the affordability issue, Disney may continue to discount room rates and offer special pricing or Free Dining promotions, though with recent decreases in promotions that may not happen. If they do, it would be so that Disney would continue to keep attendance up and rooms filled while the relative value of the park passes continues to increase. As the economy rebounds, instead of having to put a huge price increase in place to bring prices back to market value, Disney will just continue the decrease in promotions and the net profits shoot back up. It’s a great way of preserving the relative market value of the park passes against the price increases in other entertainment venues (major league sports, movies, Broadway shows, ski passes, etc.).

I've started this blog post a number of times, trying to come up with the best way to sum up my...

I've started this blog post a number of times, trying to come up with the best way to sum up my experiences aboard the Disney Dream, the newest addition to the Disney Cruise Line fleet. I kept restarting because I couldn't come up with enough words to describe it. "Wonderful," "magnificent," "spectacular," "wow," and more just don't seem to sum it up.

I suppose that my experience may be colored by the fact that I have not been on a cruise ship in 15 years, and so the bar may have been raised in the interim, but the Disney Dream absolutely blew me away.

The Dream is one and a half times larger than Disney's first two ships, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, and that (along with new technology) allowed Disney to paint an amazing picture on a much larger canvas. From the buffet (Cabanas) and counter service (Flo's V8 Cafe) to the three rotation restaurants (Animator's Palette, Enchanted Garden and Royal Palace) and two signature restaurants (Palo and Remy) from the huge amount of space for the younger kids (It's a Small World Nursery, Oceaneer's Club and Oceaneer's Lab) to the tween and teen clubs (Edge and Vibe) and adult nightclub district (Pink, Skyline Lounge, Evolution, 687, and District Lounge), from the various pools and wet play areas to the signature AquaDuck (the first water coaster at sea) and much, much more, the Disney Dream has no end to its delights. (OK, there is actually an end, because given enough time you will get to spend sufficient time at each, but it'll take a lot more than one cruise to get your fill.)

I only had 44 hours on board from embarkation to debarkation, and I saw and experienced as much as I could, but there was so much more that I couldn't get to. As with Walt Disney World, you can't see it all in one trip.

In fact, as the title of this post indicates, the Dream is a fabulous addition to the portfolio of Disney vacations available to you. It's a great way to have a getaway (for the whole family or just you) that will be full of fun and make wonderful memories, and should be a consideration as a destination whenever you're planning a Disney vacation.

From the moment you enter the spectacular atrium (with your party being officially announced aboard), you know that this ship is magnificent. The decor is wonderful. The design details are beautiful. The statue of Commodore Donald is great and the chandelier is amazing.

Staterooms are pretty roomy as far as staterooms go. Don't expect a room the size of a hotel room at Walt Disney World, not even a Value resort room (unless you get one of the big suites, but then if you can do that, you probably wouldn't have experienced a Value resort room), but having experienced staterooms on other ships many years ago, these rooms look nice and comfortable.

As Karl Holz, President of Disney Cruise Line and New Vacation Operations, noted, Disney learns from their guest comments. The Dream's stateroom beds have a 13-inch clearance from the floor (much more than the Magic or Wonder), high enough to fit most suitcases. And Owner's Locker members should be able to just squeeze their lockers under the bed, as well.

If you've got an inside stateroom, don't worry that you won't be able to see outside. Through the wonders of a "Magic Porthole," you'll get a live feed of the view outside the ship around the clock. At random intervals, Disney characters will appear on the porthole briefly. For example, Peach the starfish from Finding Nemo may wash up onto the porthole for a few moments, or Hyacinth Hippo from Fantasia may pirouette past your view. Don't worry, though, the porthole switches off at the press of a button if nobody's going to sleep due to watching for the "guest appearances."

This Wednesday, January 26, the Disney Dream begins sailing 3-, 4- and 5-day Bahamas cruises from Port Canaveral. Its sister ship, the Disney Fantasy, will arrive and begin sailing 7-day Caribbean cruises in April 2012.

I've got so much more to tell you about this ship, and I'll do so over the next couple of weeks on the main MousePlanet site. I just wanted to get this blog post up before disappearing into the fog of preparing Monday's Walt Disney World Resort Update for publication.

See you real soon with more about the Disney Dream! In the meantime, to "wet" your appetite, here's a video that my friends at Disney helped to make of me narrating my first ride down the AquaDuck water coaster. I felt so "Travel Channel" making this!

We'll have a lot more written about the Disney Dream in the coming weeks, both by me and other MousePlanet staff who will be on the ship in the next few days. They'll have the comparative view of those who have sailed on the Disney Cruise Line before, while I'm going to give you the full, unvarnished pleasure of someone experiencing the Disney Cruise magic (as opposed to the Disney Magic cruise) at sea.

Meanwhile, if you'd like to start making your own reservations for a cruise on the Dream, you can contact your travel agent or the Disney Cruise Line. MousePlanet’s preferred Disney travel providers are MouseEarVacations.com and Small World Vacations.

Note: I was aboard the ship as invited media for the Christening Voyage press event, meaning that Disney picked up the cost of my trip and provided other perks not normally offered to paying guests in order to allow me to have the opportunity to write about the trip for you. While that certainly led to me enjoying the voyage more than if I had paid myself, I can confidently say that I would have loved it anyway, that my writing is not influenced by it, and that there were no conditions placed on my writings whatsoever. As evidence, I will note that we are now starting to plan a family vacation on the Dream as soon as we can work out the details.

At a press event Tuesday night, Walt Disney World announced more details about the New Fantasyland expansion, which will double the size of the existing land. The announcement had a mix of previously-announced features and new additions.

As previously announced, an anchor of the land will be the new attraction Under the Sea: The Journey of the Little Mermaid. This new attraction, a copy of the one being installed at Disney California Adventure park, is under construction on the former site of the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea lagoon.

Also previously announced, Beast's Castle will feature the Be Our Guest Restaurant, which will change between "good food fast" during the day and table service in the evening. Nearby, Belle's Village will feature Gaston's Tavern, the Bonjour gift shop, and Belle's Cottage; the latter will be a replica of Maurice and Belle's cottage, from which a magic mirror will grant you access to the Beast's Library where you will enjoy Enchanted Storytelling with Belle.

Eric Jacobson talks about the new Seven Dwarfs Mine Coaster coming to Walt Disney World. Photo by Mark Goldhaber.

In the originally-announced expansion, you would have found Cinderella's chateau and Aurora's cottage nearby, but the princess meet-and-greets have been merged with all of the other princesses into the Princess Fairy Tale Hall, which will be a large-scale themed meet-and-greet location where Snow White's Scary Adventures is currently located. On the site previously assigned to the princesses, a Seven Dwarfs Mine Coaster will provide guests with a chance to ride through the workplace of Snow White's little men. The coaster will feature new technology that allows the mine cars to rock in a controlled fashion from side to side as the mine cars did in the original movie.

Guests will wait in a circus-themed queue-less waiting area. Image © Disney.

Dumbo the Flying Elephant will, as previously planned, be relocated to the current site of Mickey's Toontown Fair with two ride spinners to double its capacity. While details of the "queue-less waiting system" are still not complete, guests will be able to play in a big top-themed atmosphere while awaiting their turn to ride an elephant.

Near Dumbo, The Great Goofini stars Goofy as a flying acrobatic pilot flying over the circus in a re-themed Goofy's Barnstormer roller coaster.

The storybook circus-themed area will be the first to come online, with the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast-themed areas also opening to guests in 2012. The Seven Dwarfs-themed coaster will open in 2013, and the Princess Fairy Tale Hall may also push into 2013.

Alan Bruun talks about the new The Magic, The Memories, and You castle projection show. Photo by Mark Goldhaber.

At the same time, Disney first described, then debuted the The Magic, The Memories, and You projection show on Cinderella Castle. The show will debut on the facade of "it's a small world" at Disneyland Park next week.

In the show, the castle becomes a canvas as well as part of the show. In addition to the display of 500 guest photos taken earlier in the day, the amazing show effects include castle turrets spinning, the castle turning into a chalk drawing of itself, and -- most spectacularly -- a turret becoming a rocket ship and taking off.

Whether it proves enough of an attraction to boost attendance is a huge questions mark, but the show is very impressive, and will be a great addition to the park's nighttime lineup.

We'll have some video of the show going up soon.

The press event continues today at sea, as Disney will christen the Disney Dream this morning and then set sail for two days to give the media a chance to experience all of the new innovations aboard the ship. I'll have more to report over the next couple of days.

As Jim put it, "Apparently, there was such a flurry of interest in the book that Amazon is selling it TODAY instead of Oct. 3...and even offering overnight shipping..."

If you want to get your own copy of "The Vault of Walt", go to Amazon.com now. Add something else to your order (might we suggest one of the books by MousePlanet's David Koenig?) worth $5.05 and you qualify for free Super Saver shipping!

Note that, while MousePlanet receives a tiny percentage if you buy the books through our Amazon affiliate link above, we don't make any money off of your purchase. Jim (and David), however, do make money off of their own books, and would be most grateful for your purchase.

Jim's book is also available through CreateSpace.com, which gives Jim a bigger percentage of the income (and none to MousePlanet), and I know that he'd really appreciate your support right now.

I don't know about you, but my copy has already been ordered.

And don't forget that Jim's new column, under his real name for the first time (Korkis Korner) debuts this coming Wednesday. Don't miss it!

Via Napoli opened at Epcot on Thursday, and Vance Cope covered the grand opening festivities for MousePlanet. We'll have a longer story coming in the next week, but I wanted to post Vance's first impressions for you since you can now make reservations to dine there. Here's what Vance had to say:

On Thursday, August 5, I was able to attend a media preview of the newest Disney/The Patina Group restaurant, Via Napoli, which is located at the rear of Epcot's Italy pavilion. Via Napoli, which will be a table service-only restaurant, specializes in authentic Neapolitan pizza fresh from their wood-burning ovens, along with several other classic Italian dishes.

The outside of the restaurant has a very welcoming feeling and blends in nicely with the rest of the pavilion, though it does seem to look more modern than its sister restaurant, Tutto Italia, located next door. The interior has a very open feeling, with high ceilings and lightly colored walls with framed art on them. The majority of the restaurant consists of individual tables that could sit a normal party of 4 or 6. The exceptions to this are a long bench seat against the far wall with tables that are movable, so that they can accommodate various size parties, and one very long “family” table that looks as if it could sit up to 20-25 people depending on how closely the chairs are put together, to sit large groups or possibly solo diners. I thought the room overall was very nicely put together and was very family friendly, but not a quiet place for a romantic dinner as the restaurant did seem loud.

The pizza kitchen is open to the dining room so that you can watch the chefs create your dinner. It contains three pizza ovens with sculpted faces by the names of Stromboli, Vesuvio, and Etna, named for Italy's three active volcanoes. The pizza itself is really unique and totally different from what you might find around Walt Disney World in its freshness and, most notably, its crust. The Patina Group has taken special care to use water that closely matched the quality and mineral content found in Naples, Italy, which gives the crust a crispy and chewy texture at the same time. To add even more authenticity to their pizzas, they have imported Caputo flour from Naples, San Marzano tomatoes and handmade mozzarella. Those that have never eaten a pizza from a wood burning stove may find the crust has a burnt taste to it, but I found it really good and thought that it added a lot of flavor to the slices I tasted.

Available in three different sizes, there are nine different types of pizza available on the menu from your basic Margherita (tomato, mozzarella, basil) to those much more complex like the Prosciutto e Melone (fontina, mozzarella, pecorino, prosciutto, and cantaloupe). I also had the chance to sample some of the appetizers, desserts, and drinks available at Via Napoli while at the event and thought that overall they were really good. The signature drink of the restaurant is the Acqua Fresca, available in Limonata, Blood Orange, and Strawberry, which are described on the menu as “seasonal fruit juice coolers” and will be quite refreshing on a hot day.

One of the appetizers available at Via Napoli that is meant to be shared by a whole table of dinners is the Fritto Misto which is an assortment of fried vegetables, fish, cheese and Arancini. The vegetables tasted very fresh and the batter that they were fried in added a nice crunch and saltiness. The Arancini (which are also available as their own appetizer) are fried risotto balls with a crunchy exterior and a soft interior filled with mozzarella and meat ragu. From the dessert menu, I sampled the Zeppole di Caterina (ricotta cheese fritter served with whipped cream and chocolate sauce) -- which tasted like a really good donut -- and the Gelato Frizzante, which is an “Italian Style” ice cream soda. Via Napoli also has an extensive list of wines, cocktails, and alcoholic signature drinks.

Open now for walk ups, Advance Dining Reservations are now available to book for all dates starting September 10.

Disneyland prices take a hike

The Disneyland Resort has announced its annual price hike, shifting the days slightly to announce...

The Disneyland Resort has announced its annual price hike, shifting the days slightly to announce on a Tuesday with an effective date of Thursday, instead of the Friday/Sunday dates used recently. The cost of a one-day, one-park ticket is now $76 for adults and $68 for children ages 3-9. The new prices are effective this Thursday, August 5.

A new pass type, the two-day, single park pass, gets a price tag $10 less than the two-day Parkhopper pass.

Annual passports jumped quite a bit again this year, with the cost of the Premium Annual Passport climbing $20 to $459. Deluxe passes are up $30 to $329, or $428 with parking. Southern California Annual Passes are up $30 to $239, while SoCal Select Passes are up $15 to $184. Parking is a $99 add-on to all passes except for the Premium and Premier passes, where it is included. The Premier Pass (valid at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts) appears to be price-stable for now at $700.

By announcing ticket price increases at the beginning of August, Disney gains two benefits: It provides a nice last-minute boost to the fiscal fourth-quarter earnings (Disney's fiscal year ends at the end of September), and it puts the new prices out there in time for the publication cycle for guide books and for the start of booking for the following year's packages. With the new prices in effect, look for resort prices to be set this this weekend so that booking can be opened for all 2011 travel packages.

All four Annual Passports increased in price by $15-$30:
•	Southern California Select: $184 ($20 increase)
•	Southern California: $239 ($30 increase)
•	Deluxe: $329 ($30 increase)
•	Premium: $459 ($15 increase)

Since the new prices go into effect on Thursday, you've got a day to buy passes at the old rate before the increase goes into place. Good luck!

Crowds are starting to return to Disney Parks & Resorts, prompting them to start decreasing room...

Crowds are starting to return to Disney Parks & Resorts, prompting them to start decreasing room and dining discounts, and that would certainly mean that there would be no reason to back off of the annual ticket price increase. This year, Walt Disney World shifted from its traditional practice of first-Sunday-in-August price increases. Instead of waiting until late Friday afternoon after the close of the weekly news cycle to announce price hikes for Walt Disney World theme park ticket prices effective on Sunday, this year's increases were announced this afternoon, on a Tuesday, with a Thursday effective date.

One-day, one-park tickets are up $3 for adults, to $82, and up $6 for children, to $74. The Park Hopper and Water Park Fun & More options have both risen $2 to $54. Adult 10-day base tickets are up $19 to $262, with unexpiring 10-day tickets with both Park Hopper and Water Park Fun & More options jumping $27 to $583. 10-day base tickets for children are up $29 to $239, with their tricked-out price with all options leaping $37 to $560. Please note that all ticket prices in this story do not reflect the additional 6.5 percent sales tax.

By announcing ticket price increases at the beginning of August since 2006, Disney gains two benefits: It provides a nice last-minute boost to the fiscal fourth-quarter earnings (Disney's fiscal year ends at the end of September), and it puts the new prices out there in time for the publication cycle for guide books and for the start of booking for the following year's packages. With the new prices in effect, look for Disney Dining Plan prices to be locked in and resort prices to be set this this weekend so that booking can be opened for all 2011 travel packages.

If you'd like to compare the prices below to last year's prices, you can do that here.

Theme park annual pass prices are also increasing. The Adult Annual Pass is up $10 to $499 and a child AP is up $18 to $450. Adult Premium Annual Pass increased $10 to $629, while the child PAP rose $21 to $567. Florida resident Annual, Premium and Seasonal Passes are also rising. Renewal prices and DVC discount prices are not yet available, but they should be posted by Thursday. [Update: The table below has been updated to reflect renewal prices.]

[Update: Other ticket prices updated 8/5]
After raising prices by $1 earlier this year, one-day, one-park water park passes are unchanged at $46 for adults and $40 for children. DisneyQuest has had a $1 jump, to $42 for adults and $36 for children. Wide World of Sports admission is up 70 cents for adults, to $12.61, while the children's price is unchanged at $9.34. Tickets to Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba and annual passes for water parks and DisneyQuest are unchanged.

[Monthly-payment Florida AP info added 8/5]
Florida residents can also continue to buy monthly-payment Annual Passes of all types. For each pass, a down payment of $87.33 (including tax) must be made for adult tickets, $78.81 (including tax) for child tickets.

It's a great way of preserving the relative market value of the park passes against the price increases in other entertainment venues (major league sports, movies, Broadway shows, ski passes, etc.).

Third bus accident in two weeks at Walt Disney World

Just before noon today, the Walt Disney World bus fleet was involved in its third accident in...

Just before noon today, the Walt Disney World bus fleet was involved in its third accident in twelve days when a bus driven by 81-year-old Fredrick Cassens failed to stop and ran into the back of an SUV driven by 47-year-old Mark Sigman of Ohio. The impact pushed Sigman's SUV into a Disney van driven by 20-year-old Brianna Berry. The Disney van and the SUV had stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of East Buena Vista Drive and World Drive. There were 19 passengers on the bus. Cassens reportedly required medical assistance at the scene, but was not taken to the hospital. There were no other reported injuries. Cassens has reportedly been charged with careless driving.

The Disney transportation department has been having a run of bad luck lately, with a Disney bus running into the back of a stopped Mears bus on the roadway leading to the Epcot toll plaza on March 23 and a young bicyclist veering into a roadway at Fort Wilderness and hitting the side of a bus before being run over and fatally injured just two days ago.

After Thursday's accident, Walt Disney World President Meg Crofton issued a statement saying:

This afternoon, we experienced a tragic accident on our property.

We are deeply saddened by what happened and are doing everything we can to provide resources and support to the family. The circumstances of the accident are under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol and we are working closely with them to gather the facts.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, and all of our Cast Members join me in extending our deepest sympathies.

The fact that two buses have rear-ended another stationary vehicle in less than two weeks raises concern about whether there are problems with either bus drivers or brakes, and I wondered whether there are any changes or testing in the works to address this issue.

"The three incidents are unrelated," Disney spokesperson Andrea Finger told MousePlanet. "It's important to recognize that on an average day, we have close to 300 buses on our property and nearly 250,000 people, including guests, Cast Members and business vendors. That population is similar to Reno, Nevada."

"We constantly review our operations, including our transportation system," continued Finger. "Based on the information provided by the Florida Highway Patrol, we continue to believe our transportation system is safe."

Overall responsibility for the safety of the bus system falls on the shoulders of Jim Vendur, who took over transportation operations from Kevin Lansberry last September in addition to his existing oversight of transportation maintenance, utilities and telecommunications.

An online recruiting notice for Disney bus drivers notes in part that:

It is also the important responsibility of Bus Drivers to conduct vehicle inspections and ensure the safety of our Guests and Cast Members.

A Commercial Driver License (CDL) is not necessary to apply for the Bus Driver role, but will be required if hired into the role.

Coming soon to Walt Disney World - Monthly Payment Annual Passes

Sources at Walt Disney World tell MousePlanet that the monthly payment plan first offered to...

Sources at Walt Disney World tell MousePlanet that the monthly payment plan first offered to Disneyland Annual Passholders in late 2008 will be extended to Walt Disney World Passholders later this year. The official announcement is expected sometime next week, when Disney is also expected to debut a new Annual Passport that will be valid at both the Florida and California Resorts.

Few details are available about the Walt Disney World monthly payment option, which is not expected to launch until sometime this summer. The Disneyland version, currently restricted to Southern California residents only, requires customers to make a deposit equal to the cost of a one-day, one-park ticket. The remaining monthly payments are then automatically charged to a credit card placed on file at the time the passport is purchased. The Walt Disney World version is expected to be open to all Florida residents, and will require a deposit and credit card payments similar to the Disneyland pass. Non-residents are not expected to be eligible for this option.

The resort is reportedly launching this plan as another attempt to grow their Annual Passholder base. Disneyland saw sales of Annual Passes skyrocket after launching the monthly payment plan, and Walt Disney World is hoping that the financing option will help boost sales of their pricier passes. If the two plans are similar, a Florida resident would be able to "upgrade" their $79 one-day, one-park ticket (expected to go to $83 this August if current patterns hold) to a seasonal annual passport with payments of about $15 per month. After deposit, payments for the Florida resident Premium AP would be just under $40 per month - still a big chunk, but much easier on the budget than shelling out $489 (current price) at one time. Note that all prices listed do not include tax.

We haven't yet heard if the monthly-payment option will be offered for the combined Walt Disney World / Disneyland Resort annual passport. While it would seem to make sense, the logistics involved with launching the new pass may leave that option for later implementation.

Let us know in the comments below what you think of this option!

Walt Disney World spokeswoman Zoraya Suarez told MousePlanet "We’ve lost a valued Cast Member and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and co-workers tonight as we mourn his passing."
The stunt show, usually called "Epic" by Studios cast members, has had serious injuries before, but never a fatality.
This is the third cast member fatality at Walt Disney World in the last six weeks. Austin Wuennenberg was killed in the monorail accident that took place early in the morning of July 5 and Mark Priest died from injuries sustained during a performance of Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Tutorial just a week ago.

The down economy continues to challenge Disney to fill their hotel rooms, which is resulting in a continuing stream of deals for you!

Walt Disney World has just announced free dining packages for September 27 through December 17. Right now it's only available to Disney Visa cardmembers (use codes EVN or GCA), but it will open for general availability on Sunday morning.

NOTE: This offer is not available November 25-28, the Wednesday through Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend.

This time, the free dining comes with a twist: while the package stays the same if you book at a moderate, deluxe or villas resort, free dining packages at value resorts will be the quick service dining plan instead of the basic dining plan. You should be able to pay to upgrade your plan, but the "free" value of the deal will be $29.99 per day for adults, $8.99 for children instead of $39.99 per day for adults, $10.99 for children. For a family of four with both children under age 10, that's a difference of $24 per day. For a family of four with both kids age 10 and up, it's a difference of $40 per day. Please be aware of that before you choose your resort!

You can book this offer through September 26, the last day of the Walt Disney Company's 2008-2009 fiscal year. Book now, get a great deal, and help Disney improve its numbers at the same time!

Austin Wuennenberg, the monorail operator killed in Sunday morning's accident, may have helped to keep the passengers on Monorail Purple from injury.
The National Transportation Safety Board released a "factual information" media advisory today related to its investigation into the collision. The facts appear to be very similar to those that were reported in Monday's Walt Disney World Update and Tuesday's MouseStation Podcast.

Here's a map to let you follow along. Satellite image is © Google.
Monorail Pink emptied its train and went past the switch between the Epcot loop and a spur track that led to the Magic Kingdom loop to transfer on its way back to the barn. Monorail Purple pulled into the station and loaded a family of six. The pilot of Monorail Pink was told to back through the Epcot/spur switch, along the spur track, through the spur/Magic Kingdom loop switch and on through the Magic Kingdom loop, but the Epcot/spur switch had not moved to connect to the spur track. Pink backed along the Epcot beam into Purple. The one piece of information that we did not have was that Monorail Purple had actually been given clearance to leave the station and was moving forward out of the station as Pink came at it at 15 mph.

According to the NTSB advisory, "There are indications that the operator of the Purple train had brought the train to a stop and had attempted to put the train in reverse prior to the collision. To this point in the investigation, no anomalies or malfunctions have been found with the automatic train stop system or with any mechanical components of the switch or with either of the trains."

What this means is that Wuennenberg, seeing Monorail Pink suddenly rushing toward him, had the presence of mind to stop the monorail train and try to back it out of Pink's way. Unfortunately, there was not enough time and Pink plowed into Purple, killing Wuennenberg. If Purple had continued accelerating forward, the combined speed of the trains at the moment of impact would likely have been 30 mph, the maximum combined speed of two monorails traveling in override mode. (As discussed in the WDW Update, Sunday's blog post and the MouseStation Podcast, the monorails needed to be in override mode both to go through the switch and to get into the station while another monorail was at the switch.) If the monorail was stopped, the impact would have been 15 mph, and if Wuennenberg had been able to get it at least started into reverse, the impact speed may have been as little at 10 or even 5 mph. The resulting decrease in impact speed most likely prevented the family aboard Purple from sustaining serious injury.

A couple of questions come to mind, though.

1) The NTSB found that "To this point in the investigation, no anomalies or malfunctions have been found ... with any mechanical components of the switch or with either of the trains." This means that the switch was functioning properly, and that it was likely entirely a communication error. Somehow, Monorail Pink was given the go-ahead without the track switch engaging to the spur track. Did the monorail shop give clearance without moving the switch? Was only the Magic Kingdom/spur switch engaged, while the Epcot/spur switch was never triggered? Did the monorail control center mishear something from the monorail shop and give clearance without the monorail shop having said that it was OK to do so? How did Monorail Pink get the clearance to back through the switch when it had not engaged?

2) The Epcot/spur switch is fairly close to the TTC. If Monorail Purple had been given the go-ahead to pull out of the station, while Monorail Pink was just coming through the switch, isn't that cutting it a little close? With the low volume of traffic at 2 a.m., couldn't they have waited a little longer to release Purple to move forward? What was the reason for the tight interval?

3) While the monorails were not expected to sustain any impacts (as illustrated by the fact that there were no major crashes in the prior 38 years), how could a collision at a speed of no more than 15 mph cause so much damage?

There are many more questions to be asked and answered, though it is likely that we won't get any more answers until the NTSB releases them. We'll stay on top of this story and continue to post updates as we get further information.

At approximately 2:00 this morning, Monorail Pink collided with Monorail Purple at the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC), killing Austin Wuennenberg, 21, the pilot of Monorail Purple. The pilot of Monorail Pink was injured in the accident, but the six park guests aboard Monorail Purple were not injured.

Austin Wuennenberg's profile photo on Facebook.

This is the first fatality in the nearly 38-year history of the Walt Disney World Monorail System.

Mike Griffin, Walt Disney World Vice President of Public Affairs, issued the following statement:

Today, we mourn the loss of our fellow cast member. Our hearts go out to his family and to those who have lost a friend and co-worker. The safety of our guests and cast members is always our top priority. The monorail is out of service and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to determine what happened and the approximate next steps.

It is reported that Wuennenberg had to be cut out of the cabin. A photo posted on The Monorail Society's Web site supports that report.

The accident occurred on the Epcot monorail beam, which transports guests between the transportation hub and the Epcot theme park. The monorails run for about an hour and a half after the last park closing to allow guests to return to their cars at the other theme park in case they had transferred from one park to the other during the day. As Epcot had closed at 10 p.m. and the Magic Kingdom park had closed at 1:00 a.m., it was likely one of the last runs of the day.

One possible explanation, since the monorails were approaching the end of their operating day, is that Monorail Pink was attempting to reposition itself to go back to the monorail barn for the night. For Epcot monorails, this requires leaving the TTC station and passing a track switch, then backing up to the Magic Kingdom Express monorail station. Once fully on the Magic Kingdom Express beam, the monorail proceeds forward through the Contemporary Resort, then stops as it nears the Magic Kingdom. At that point, it then backs up past another track switch that takes it to the monorail barn.

If the pilot of Monorail Pink was backing up, thinking that the monorail was heading for an empty Magic Kingdom Express station, but the switch had not moved to transfer it, Monorail Pink would have backed up back into the Epcot station that was already occupied by Monorail Purple. Since the collision system is reportedly disabled during track switching, there would have been no automated warnings. If this scenario is indeed what happened, why Monorail Pink backed up before the switch moved to the Magic Kingdom Express loop is unknown.

[NOTE: Earlier versions of this story indicated that Pink rear-ended Purple, and that Wuennenberg was driving Pink. Further review of the photos and video footage indicate that Pink was in front, but it was also confirmed elsewhere that Purple was stationary before the crash, with Wuennenberg in the cockpit. This indicates that Pink was backing into the station, which was already occupied by Purple.]

For a look at the switch in question, take a look at this aerial view below from Google Maps. The switch in question is on the right side of the image, just after the tracks cross World Drive.
ClickOrlando has video footage shot by a guest immediately after the crash. WARNING: This video may be disturbing to some.

All four Walt Disney World theme parks are open today, though the Walt Disney World Monorail system remains closed while Walt Disney World officials, Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) work to determine the cause of the accident. A Walt Disney World spokeswoman could not provide MousePlanet with further details in that area.

It is likely that subjects of the investigation included whether -- due to the late hour of the crash -- fatigue played a role in what happened, and how the many safeguards in the monorail system to prevent just such a crash from occurring were overridden.

The Disneyland Resort Monorails was reportedly closed earlier today, but later reports indicate that it is now running. Disneyland Resort spokesperson Suzi Brown said "This morning, we inspected the Disneyland Resort Monorail and conducted the necessary safety checks. Everything was working properly; therefore, we have made the decision to continue to operate the Disneyland Resort Monorail."

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Austin Wuennenberg and his family.

Apparently, Disney will be testing a new Wishes Fireworks Dessert Party in the Magic Kingdom...

Apparently, Disney will be testing a new Wishes Fireworks Dessert Party in the Magic Kingdom starting on Tuesday.

The test will run from June 23 through Saturday, August 29, "near" the Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle Station. Our guess is that it probably will be in the Noodle Station's lower seating area and possibly the middle level, as well. There's really no other area that can accommodate the 160 people (maximum) that the party will allow aside from the smoking area, which would either tick off the dislocated smokers or the non-smokers forced to put up with the smokers.

The party will feature an all-you-can-eat dessert buffet and beverages, and will run from 1 hour prior to Wishes through the end of Wishes.

The cost will be $17.99 for adults and $9.99 for kids. Booking opens on Monday, and you can call the Disney Dining Line (407-WDW-DINE/407-939-3563) to make those reservations.

Party attendance is prepaid, and (as with the Fantasmic dining package), there will be no refunds if the weather causes a cancellation of Wishes. The dessert reception will be held regardless of weather.

That's right, Walt Disney World has finally opened up online Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs) to the general public following a successful trial with travel agents. Go to http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/restaurants/ to view all restaurants and make your reservations.

While this is now available, don't expect to grab a prime dinner seating for Le Cellier less than 90 days out (or 90 + 10). The busy restaurants still book up quickly. We're uncertain as of yet what time the booking clock ticks over, whether it's midnight ET or 7 a.m. ET (when the phone lines open up). If anybody knows, please pass it along.

When you try to book a reservation, you will be able to search for up to 5 consecutive days at a time, and also select the preferred time of day for the reservation. You'll indicate the number of diners and the system will do the rest.

For those who don't want to pay for long-distance calls to Walt Disney World, or who prefer doing research without dealing with cast members, this will be a welcome change.

Happy dining!

Thanks to Sue Pisaturo of MousePlanet sponsor Small World Vacations for tipping us off!
