I've seen the new Tinker Bell film several times. I've seen Sleeping Beauty several times. I've yet to see any of the fairies have the power of packing.

The closest I've come to is Mary Poppins, who can snap her fingers and clean things up (not to say I couldn't have used that last night, too).

We leave this week for Walt Disney World ... a trip we've been talking about every since AVP announced that the next MA would be taking place there.

I've confirmed our dining reservations at 50s Prime Time and checked in online for our resort (even double checked that the reservation mentions we're celebrating our anniversary).

Of course, between now and when we leave I have three days of work and two evening meetings... which means packing at 10 p.m.

I have a list and Mr. Niwel has offered to pick up our last-minute items at Walgreens (thank you, honey)!

Since we're red-eyeing, and are going to the park before we get to our room, we'll be doing a quick change/freshen up the in Miami airport bathroom -- the last time I was there an astute traveler noted: "it smells like a bathroom in here!"

So there we are ... three days away from a magical weekend at the OTHER Happiest Place on Earth and I'm still without a packing fairy.

If anyone sees Tinker Bell's neurotic cousin OCD Bell, please send her my way! :D

Niwel's Mom Via Voicemail: Hi Honey! Do you know you aren't in first class between Miami and Orlando.

ME: Say what?

This was how my conversation with my mother went a few days ago and why, boys and girls, making airline reservations at 8 a.m. is never advised.

As I mentioned in my last blog, as a gold flyer, DH and I were able to purchase tickets to Florida, and used miles to upgrade ourselves to first class (we figured if we have to red-eye, we might as we be comfortable).

But, apparently, something went amiss ... and while we were upgraded from LAX to Miami and from Orlando back to LAX, the middle flight was booked at a "non-upgradable fare."

I contacted AA and asked -- VERY NICELY -- if that could be corrected. That 1)we didn't realize there was a category change; 2) the first class on our flight was almost entirely open 3) if the upgrade couldn't go through I would like the miles credited back.

I was put on hold in five-minute spurts. The the agent came back on:

AA AGENT: We are giving you a refund. $5 credit per person to use on a future flight.

ME: Oh? (slightly disappointed)

AGENT: And you have the upgrade from Miami to Orlando.

ME: Yes! Thank you!

So we are set on the flight -- and that night: our Magical Express tags arrived! I'll admit it... I got giddy.

The only part yet to decide is our gameplan. I just have to find the time to sit down with Mr. Niwel and plan it (I think I convinced him that while we are doing Mission: Space, we will be doing the "less intense" version).

And I am trying to figure out if we ride Test track and get an FP for Mission Space, or vice versa. And do we ride Everest and get an FP for Dinosaur or the Safari? Or Should I mush that around?

Stay tuned!

P.S. If you are going to be at the WDW MouseAdventure and want a Crazy Straw, just find me Saturday (gameday) and tell me the answer to this: I wrote an article inspired by a "land" that Betty White, one of Disney World's 15th Anniversary co-hosts, mentioned as "the one area Disney didn't think of." What was the name of that land?

I'm so excited to be uttering that phrase.

I have never been to the parks with my husband before (we went to Downtown Disney the night before our DCL cruise, but I don't count that).

When we learned MouseAdventure was going to be held at WDW this fall, we figured it would be a perfect opportunity to fly down so we could help staff.

Last time we were at WDW we stayed at POFQ, which we enjoyed very much. I've stayed at POR several times (the first when it was still the Dixie Landings). We walked from POFQ to POR and DH loved the themeing... so I booked us in there this time (I'm going to work some magic so we get a mansion house room).

So the lodging was taken care of.

Next step: The flight. There is ONE nonstop per day from LAX to MCO, but it gets in so late in the day, you can't get to the park (thank you time zones). So we decided to splurge a bit and take the red eye -- with a first class upgrade -- from LAX to Miami, and then connecting to an Orlando flight, so we could get to the park in the morning.

We'll be taking Magical Express (I cry when we reach that red carpet). I know it can sometimes take a little while to load the shuttle and get to the hotel, but I didn't want the hassle of gathering the luggage and renting a car when Disney transportation is so much easier to use.

Now we're working on planning the fun before the work begins. Day 1 will be Animal Kingdom/Studios. On Day 2 we'll be at staff meetings, and then head to Epcot (we are both in need of a pre-MA refresh). Day 3 is the game. We're going to probably skip MK since, in my heart, Disneyland is better.

So if anyone reads this ... stay tuned... I might toss in a crazy straw question....;)

New ACE Credit Recommendation for work component!

We have an exciting update that could broaden the opportunities for students to obtain credit for participating in our programs at the Disneyland Resort or the Walt Disney World Resort!
This credit recommendation was made based on the comprehensive training each Disney Cast Member receives as well as the participant's ability to apply this training into their daily environment. It was further determined that the skills participants gain while on our program will contribute significantly to their academic and professional careers beyond the program.

Additionally, this ACE recommendation provides the opportunity for more of our students to gain college credit for participating in our programs, allowing them to maintain their full-time status at their home educational institution.

Every year, for the past few years, I’ve asked a question to the teams coming to MouseAdventure and the winners receive a prize — a crazy straw (which we have learned are useful not only for drinking, but for making lines in the concrete) — sort of a little bonus prize or those who take the time to look up the answer.

Since this MouseAdventure has a mystery theme, I thought I would make this year’s crazy straw question about one of my favorite Agatha Christie novels: “And Then There Were None.”

To get a crazy straw this year, all you need to do is find me at check-in or at the awards after, introduce yourself and tell me: Who is the murderer?

Whether you have seen the movie or read the book the answer is the same (if you play the computer game, your answer can be obtained by watching the film in the screening room after you have completed the game).

This opportunity is open to all, regardless of MA playing level. It will NOT add points to your score in any way.
Happy hunting! :D

9:01 p.m.
Seems like an odd time to be excited about. I mean it's not like 12:34 or even 1:23. But what made 9:01 so special last Saturday night was that it was when Mr. Niwel and I could book our excursions and spa times on our cruise.

We had another couple over that night for dinner, so at 8:53 I excused myself from the table and went to the living room. I logged in to our reservation on the Disney Cruise Line site and hit refresh several times. Then ..... just like that ... I was in.

I had gone to our wish list several weeks earlier and "saved" the ones we wanted, so that when it was time to book, I didn't have to search. We were also lucky in that, as Castawy Club members, we could book at 90 days, vs. the first-timers who have to wait for 75 days out.

We decided not to book Palo. The dinners in the dining rooms sounded wonderful, and we couldn't see getting the buffet, and there wasn't enough on the tea menu that Mr. Niwel could eat (just as well, because I found out that the teas and buffets booked up really fast).

I clicked on Cozumel excursions and got the power treasure snorkel -- which I have yet to find a review on, so I hope it is good. We also booked floats and tubes at a special "double dip" rate -- so we save 75%.

The only thing I was worried about booking was my uber fabulous Castaway Cay Cabana Massage. Both times I have been to CC I have had one, so it is a Niwel tradition. I hadn't given a whole lot of thought to timing ... but I knw I wanted it on Day 2 as a way to kick off our trip. I remembered that it took a certain amount of time to get to Serenity Bay from the boat, so I booked the 10 a.m. treatment instead of the 9 a.m. Just thinking about it calms me down during crazy times at work.

So now the hard part is done. Less than three months from now is the trip we have been planning for more than a year.

9:01 -- I love you! :D

Once Upon a Dream Come True: Disneyland to Reopen the Castle Walkthrough

Image: http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/picture.php?albumid=136&pictureid=1032

Once upon a time...

Once upon a time there was a beautiful castle in a magical kingdom. For 46 years, boys and girls of all ages enjoyed walking around within its walls, seeing and hearing the enchanting tale of “Sleeping Beauty.” But one day, evil forces put a spell on the castle, causing the story within it to sleep forever — or so we thought…

Now, after nearly seven years of slumber, Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle walkthrough will awaken this year, “sometime before the autumn leaves fall,” according to Tony Baxter, senior vice president of Creative Development for Walt Disney Imagineering.
The original walkthrough opened on April 29, 1957, nearly two years before the premiere of “Sleeping Beauty,” with an in-park ceremony featuring Walt Disney and actress Shirley Temple.

Imagineer Ken Anderson and animation art director and color stylist Eyvind Earle created the “pop-up” storybook look of the attraction, using beautifully colored panels, forced perspective, mirrors and effects that, at that time, weren’t like anything anyone had seen.
Because the film came out after the walkthrough, some story points were added into the walkthrough that weren’t in the film (such as Maleficent calling the demons together at her castle) or vice versa (the walkthrough completely skipped over Briar Rose growing up in the forest and meeting the prince).

The original walkthrough used books, songs and even scents to take guests from King Stephan’s palace to Maleficent’s. The transition included a “Meet the Demons” area that turned into a logjam as guests tried to figure out how some effects were done, such as the goons looking back at you (turns out that the goons “eyes” were actually the eyes of the guests reflected in mirrors).

In 1977, the medieval style was replaced with miniature dioramas (which you can find examples of in the windows of the Emporium on Main Street, U.S.A.). Many of the effects were removed completely … although the books and sounds remained. The dark hallways continued to be a source of fright and amusement for guests. (Writers note: As a Fantasyland cast member in 1998, I was asked to close the castle for the night on a few occasions. Let me say that I don’t think I’ve ever been so creeped out in my life as I did when walking through there alone at closing time. At one point, later in the summer, management informed us that only male CMs were allowed to close the attraction after it was revealed that some teenage boys were hiding out in the castle nooks and crannies to scare the female CMs.)

The beloved Disneyland attraction closed its doors on Oct. 7, 2001. However, no specific reason was given for the closure during a special event at the Disneyland Opera House to announce a platinum edition Blu-ray Hi-Def edition of “Sleeping Beauty,” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the original film, which will be released in January 2009 (where fans of the attraction can gleam more information on its history, along with deleted scenes and songs).

Some say the walkthrough was closed because of the lack of accessibility for those in wheelchairs, some say it was because of the high cost of maintenance, some say it was because of safety (the day it closed was the day the United States began bombing Afghanistan and Disneyland was considered to be a possible target) and there are others who say it was only closed because it was needed in a MouseAdventure quest and the evil creators of the game were being especially evil.

Regardless of the reason, fans of the attraction can thank Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment for generating the spark to reopen it. One of the bonus features on the two-disc DVD is a recreation of the original walkthrough.

To make it happen, the team at WDHE needed some inspiration -- and they didn’t have much to go off of besides an old ViewMaster scene. So they turned to Walt Disney Imagineering for the key – literally. WDI Art Director Chris Merritt and Technical Director John Gritz went to Disneyland to see what they could find to use for inspiration, but the attraction looked nothing like it did seven years earlier. However, peeling away the old paint and wallpaper revealed something remarkable: Some of the scenes and colors and effects were still there – including the goons and their mirrors, which hadn’t scene the light of day in more than 30 years.

When the attraction is unveiled later this year, the “show” will return to the unique style of the original 1957 walkthrough, but add in some technical enhancements not available in the 1950s) and Merritt and Gritz are even creating some new scenes – although they are keeping mum on exactly what they plan is.

What we do know is that one of the two stores within the castle is closing, so that guests who are unable to climb stairs or navigate the tight castle passageways will be able to experience the walkthrough “virtually” in a special room, similar to the one for the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage in Tommorowland.

WDI’s Doug Hartwell, who created the model of the castle that WDHE used for its virtual walkthough took me on a tour this morning in the foyer of the opera house (I felt a little like "Miss Disneyland Tencennial” Julie Reihm when Walt gave her a tour of the Pirates of the Caribbean models.)

Hartwell, who drove the submarines in 1976, has been with WDI for 21 years. The model he created at 1/4-inch actual size is amazing. It has 12 scenes and two books at the start and finish of the attraction, in addition to a “bottomless pit echo chamber,” the true love’s kiss scene and the room of floating spinning wheels. It reminded me a bit of Colleen Moore’s Fairy Castle at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

“The castle looks small – but there’s all this space inside,” Hartwell said, adding that the model will be used to create the actual attraction, and was inspired by some of the scenes on the DVD.

When it was announced at WDI that they would be undertaking the castle “awakening” it was “total excitement,” Hartwell said. “You don’t get opportunities like this very often. You get project s you are willing to work on, but when you get something like this … to actually be part of history – recreating history – its very exciting.”

I think Walt would be proud with the new walkthrough, and the kiss that WDI and WDHE bestowed on the castle. It might not be song or beauty – but on Disneyland’s 53rd birthday it is the perfect gift – and the perfect finish to this fairy tale.

And, as Fauna says at the end of “Sleeping Beauty”: “I just love happy endings.”

One more thing: Tony Baxter offered a teaser for the future of Disneyland, proving that the possibilities are endless for what WDI can do: “[It’s] a whole new galaxy. That’s a hint.”

It actually is a bag or holder that hooks onto the metallic fish next to your cabin door. It is so others in your group can leave you notes and treats.

There are some people that get really into making one. I am not nearly that crafty. So I told Mr. Niwel that I would go to the Dollar Store and purchase two bags and some decoration device.

I have no clue what I'm doing, but as long as the darn thing doesn't fall apart a make a mess in the hall -- we're good to go!
Any tips? I'm open!

When MousePlanet originally ran the article, Earningland and Learningland...

When MousePlanet originally ran the article, Earningland and Learningland, there was one component that was mentioned as missing from the revamped Disneyland College Program (DLCP): the living.

Since that interview ran the DLCP has added housing - yes! -- so students from all over the country can participate and not have to worry where they will bunk down at the end of their shift at the resort.

So what changed?

"It's been one of those thing that has been on the table," said DLCP housing manager John Van Winkle, who has been with the resort for 19 years in a variety of roles-from custodial to human resources. "It happened through a lot of work that a lot people have done. Everything just aligned. It was the right time and the right place to host students."

DLCP Participants will find furnished apartments in the Center Street Promenade complex approximately 2 miles north of the resort for $159 per week (which in Southern California is a deal). The cost includes all utilities (such as electricity, Internet connection, cable hookup and waste disposal), as well as the various resort-style amenities featured at the complex. The location is MUCH closer than the Oakwood apartments in Costa Mesa the program used a decade ago.

The housing is a perk for participants, but those who live in the area do not have to move to the Promenade. Because housing is limited, Van Winkle said that right now "This will become first come, first served, but we are trying to expand."

The first people to live in the new housing are the May to January participants, who began their time at Disneyland on the May 19, and Van Winkle said the entire college program team is excited about this new living arrangements.

"We've been missing this component since 2002," Van Winkle said. "For me it feels like we're making it a tremendous addition. Students will call and e-mail in Las Vegas, Arizona, Oregon, and say I'd love to come down and can't find a place to stay. We have a place picked out -- affordable, beautiful and will give people experience."

Although Disney has not yet coined an uber cool name, like Vista Way at its Walt Disney World counterpart, Center Street has everything a Disneyland cast member could want.
All apartments have two bedrooms (with dressers, mirrors and nightstands - but you'll have to bring your own linens), two bathrooms, living room (with sofa and chair) a dining room (with table and chairs) and kitchen full of appliances (including a microwave and washer/dryer) stocked with plates, cups, flatware and gadgets that could rival the wall of stuff at Crate & Barrel.

Accommodations are finalized at registration on check-in day and room assignments are based on gender and whether the participants are over or under 21. Those under 21 are put in a Wellness apartment (dry apartment, no alcohol). A one-time Program Assessment and Activities Fee supports the events and activities scheduled throughout the program.

Within walking distance are a museum, Anaheim Ice, grocery store, restaurants and Pearson Park.

For those participants with a car, in addition to becoming everyone friend, you also get reserved parking. For those without their own four-wheel transportation, fear nor, just a 20-minute bus ride on OCTA (from a stop right by the Promenade) gets participants to the Disneyland Resort (the stop is on Harbor right across from where the cast members enter and exit), and no bus transfers are needed.

Those who carpool or opt for the bus - or biking - can sign up for commuter assistance where participants get $1 for every day they take alternative transportation.

Right now recruiters are targeting U.S. cast member hopefuls. International students interested in the program still have options at WDW (although, as Van Winkle says, they are constantly looking at updating the program).

The living component seems to complete the sides of the cast member triangle.
"We have strong sense of community," Van Winkle says. "It may be the first time someone is living with roommates. There are huge values in that learning opportunity."

"The last week has been nothing short of amazing," he adds. "It has been so great to watch the reaction of the students as they walk into their apartment for the first time. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and they are simply the most excited group of new cast members that I’ve seen in a long time.

The last few months have been spent guessing and second guessing all of our decisions regarding this cruise (which is now less than six months away.

Example
Me: I think we're going to see if we should take DME back to the airport instead of taking the DCL shuttle because it might get us to the port faster.
DH: OK
(later)
Me: On second thought, I checked with our TA and other posters on the message board and they said the shuttle from POFQ is nice and easy and we should be checked in and on the ship by 1:45/2
DH: OK

Noticing a pattern?

I am an amazing planner. I live to plan. I love to plan. Although I told my husband he can slap me if I ever create personalized itineraries like Danny Tanner did on "Full House"

I have some saving grace. I cannot spend every waking hour thinking about our DCL trip, because we are taking a weekend cruise earlier in the month, and going on a Europe cruise in 2009.

At least I don't think I can spend every waking moment doing that...

What do you think? :D

We have two trip DVDs and have recorded the Travel Channel's special on the Disney Cruise.

Once a week we watch a least one of them. Even though we aren't going until October, Mr. Niwel and I are getting so into this trip that it might as well be Labor Day Weekend right now instead of President's Day.

Last week we walked from our home to a bagel place two miles away. We spent the entire time talking about our trip -- from driving to the parking place here to taking the shuttle to the airport to the flight to landing to going on DME to our hotel to walking around DtD to taking the DCL shuttle to the ship. The more we talked, the more excited we got.

We sent away for the updated DCL DVD so we could see the new routes and more info about the Pirates IN the Caribbean party.

The only thing left to do is pay up so we can start booking Palo....

Next time: The rotation game.
