Getting to the Princess Half Marathon expo via car just got a little more complicated. Downtown Disney has the East Side bus drop (the Disney Marketplace / first stop for hotel buses) shut down during the Princess Half Marathon weekend for construction. That means EVERYONE is now using the West Side / Pleasure Island parking and bus drop/pickup location. I was down there tonight and it was a zoo! If you are going to Downtown Disney, plan to be there early and bring your patience with you. On the plus side, if you are coming in for the MousePlanet meet and greet Saturday night, Pollo Campero is very close to the buses!

If you are planning on driving to Downtown Disney and taking the bus to the Princess Half Marathon expo, I spoke tonight to a bus-loading Downtown Disney Cast Member about the expo pick-up location. According to the CM, there are no special buses to Coronado Springs for the expo - if you park at Downtown Disney, you will be taking the regularly scheduled Coronado Springs bus to the resort.

Stay tuned here for updates!

We tend to find inspiration in the oddest things. It’s Monday night and I’m sitting in my hotel...

We tend to find inspiration in the oddest things. It’s Monday night and I’m sitting in my hotel room at the Chicago Hilton O’Hare bouncing between schoolwork and writing this article. For further distraction, I’ve got the Chicago Bears playing the Detroit Lyons at Soldier field in Chicago and the 7th game of the SF / St. Louis playoff on TV (sound off but still a distraction). I’m kind of regretting that I’m in Chicago but didn’t go to the football game in person when an odd movement on the screen catches my undivided attention. Jay Cutler, the Chicago quarterback is down on the field and is obviously injured. ESPN immediately jumps to commercial and when we return, Cutler (who had received a vicious hit) returns to the game to a standing ovation. He may be feeling the effects of playing a bit more than normal in the morning but it was clear he was determined to remain in the game.

Recovering from an injury is hard to do and I admire those who can shake them off and keep going as if nothing had happened. It’s been two weeks since my now infamous “kneecapping by a speed bump” incident and I’ve yet to get myself to a Barre3 class or back out on the roads /on the gerbil wheel at the hotel gym. Work has been a total zoo with long nights to hit deadlines which has been a great excuse. It’s also been easy to focus on healing the abrasions as well as on the lingering aches and pains and ignore how fast my conditioning is disappearing. There has to be a happy medium between coming back too soon from an injury and dwelling on it for too long. Well, if Cutler can come back tonight and give it his best (and truth be told he’s not 100%) I can get off my duff and get back on the training plan. See - odd inspiration.

Training Plan

So welcome to week seven of the 20th anniversary WDW Marathon training program! Here is this week’s training schedule. My goal is to stay with the schedule during the week but will only do 50% of the long run on Sunday (see *). Next week I’ll be at 75%. I hope to be on target for the upcoming Wine & Dine Half Marathon (and let's hope this WDW running experience is a better one...).

• Monday October 22nd – travel day
• Tuesday October 23rd – 4 mile run / mybarre3.com
• Wednesday October 25th – 5 mile run
• Thursday October 26th – travel day /mybarre3.com
• Friday October 27th – 4 mile run / Barre3 studio
• Saturday October 28th – Barre3 studio
• Sunday October 29th – 13 mile run*/ Barre3 studio

Hmmmm of the Week: I am kind of amazed at how many people are not only carrying a cell phone during a race in case of emergency but are texting/looking up information/carrying on lengthy conversations while on the road. I’ve even been in a crowd that was shushed by a fellow runner who was trying to hold a business call during a half marathon (apparently we were running too loudly in a tunnel)! I get having one close by in case something goes terribly wrong but have we actually reached a point where we really need to stay connected at all times? What are your thoughts on cell phone use during a race? Necessary evil or just plain wrong?

As always, drop me a note to tell me how your marathon training is coming along or if you have suggestions of things to try. And thanks for all the well wishes!

Have a wonderful week!

As you may have heard, I was ‘knee-capped by a speed bump’ around 8.5 miles into the inaugural...

As you may have heard, I was ‘knee-capped by a speed bump’ around 8.5 miles into the inaugural Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler. I finished the run but have spent the past week nursing two mangled knees and left hand. Running has been out. So have Barre3 classes. And not only did I miss the Portland Half Marathon on Sunday I’ve now missed a week of marathon training! Now what do I do?

Well, according to a variety of web sources, all is not lost. Running Planet.com suggest if I’m only down a week and it’s over 12 weeks before the marathon, I can come back this week at 75% of recommended volume then resume normal training. As things are still extremely painful I may unfortunately lose part of this week as well. If that is the case, I can start with 50% of volume the first week back, 75% the second week, and finally then return to full training volume.

The biggest ‘no-no’ is trying to make up the lost miles which could actually lead to further injury from overtraining. I just need to take things slow and not get caught up in counting the miles. The goal is to safely make it to the marathon and to the finish line to collect that incredible 20th anniversary Walt Disney World Marathon medal. This is just a little bump in the road on that journey.

Training Plan

Here is this week’s training schedule. It’s my birthday week so for my wish I hope to be joining you very soon again on the roads!

• Monday October 8th – travel day /mybarre3.com
• Tuesday October 9th – 3 mile run / mybarre3.com
• Wednesday October 10th – 5 mile run
• Thursday October 11th – travel day /mybarre3.com
• Friday October 12th – 3 mile run / Barre3 studio
• Saturday October 13th –10 mile run / Barre3 studio
• Sunday October 14th – travel day /mybarre3.com

Total miles for the week: 21 miles

Hmmmm of the Week: I learned a very valuable lesson at the ToT 10 Miler; pack along your own first-aid kit when you are traveling! The hotels at Walt Disney World, while totally accommodating, are only allowed to dispense small-size bandages; anything else would be considered dispensing medicine which they are not allowed to do. So for my econo-sized ToT knee and hand ouches, it took a visit from the WDW paramedics (…and the hotel manager on call and hotel security and well, you get the picture…) to get fresh bandages the morning after I fell. Now that the embarrassment has finally passed, I’ve added my own well-stocked first aid kit to my travel bag. What have you discovered that you can’t (or shouldn’t) live without when you travel to a race?

As always, drop me a note to tell me how your marathon training is coming along or if you have suggestions of things to try. Thanks for all the great feedback on chocolate milk as an after-event refresher; can't wait to tip another 'cold one' soon!

Have a wonderful week!

Have I mentioned lately that while I dearly LOVE runDisney events, occasionally one comes along that is less than runDisney standards? I’ll be posting a full write-up of the inaugural Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend very soon but in the interim I will say they could have had a major hit but in my humble opinion they have a long way to go to bring this one up to the runDisney standards we all enjoy and expect.

We’ll keep this post short in anticipation of the upcoming race report but I would like to take a moment to say ‘hi’ to everyone I met at this weekend in Walt Disney World. It was wonderful to hear your inspirational stories of why you run / walk as well as share in the excitement of what was for many of you a first runDisney event. I look forward to you joining us on MousePlanet.com and to hearing from you as you continue your running/ walking endeavors. Welcome!

Training Plan

Week Four in the training program may unfortunately be totally washed out as I took a nasty tumble at full speed around mile 8.5 at the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler. I managed to finish (nothing comes between me and a finisher’s medal) but both knees and my left palm are severely gashed and abraded; I expect the bruises to come into full bloom over the next couple of days. If you’re following along with the rraining plan (and I hope you are), here’s what is scheduled for the week. Hopefully you’ll have a great training week!

•	Monday October 1st – mybarre3.com / rest
•	Tuesday October 2nd – 3 mile run / mybarre3.com
•	Wednesday October 3rd – 6 mile run
•	Thursday October 4th – travel day /mybarre3.com
•	Friday October 5th – 3 mile run / Barre3 studio
•	Saturday October 6th – Barre3 studio / rest
•	Sunday October 7th – Portland Half Marathon

Total miles for the week: 25 miles

Hmmmm of the Week: Can something that actually tastes good be good for you? As a lover of anything chocolate, I was thrilled when I first started reading that studies were pointing to good results from consuming chocolate milk right after a hard workout to add back in necessary carbs and protein. While I initially figured this was just really good PR from the Milk Council, more studies have come along confirming the initial findings. I’ve added a non-fat chocolate milk to my post-run plan and have noticed a positive difference in recovery; anyone else give it a try and/or find something that works even better?

As always, drop me a note to tell me how your marathon training is coming along or if you have suggestions of things to try. Have a great week and keep on the watch for my post-Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend recap report.

While I did not have a chance to personally visit Disneyland to see the Space Shuttle Endeavour's flyover last week, one of my dear friends did have the thrill of being there. Here is his eyewitness report - it sounds like it was an incredible experience and one to be remembered.

Ladies & Gentlemen, boys and girls, turn your attention high above the skies...

For those of us old enough to remember the introduction to Disneyland’s fireworks (until 2000),

Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, wherever you are in Disneyland, we invite you to turn your attention high above the skies of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle where…you too may see…

The space shuttle…

Ok…the original spiel ended with “…Tinkerbell, as she lights this evening’s edition of Fantasy in the Sky Fireworks…’

It won’t surprise you that my chosen venue for viewing Endeavour was Disneyland. I told myself that this was about the experience – and not necessarily ‘the photo’. That was the right attitude because, regretfully, the view, and the photo were pretty poor. Endeavour flew absolutely, positively above me…giving me a great ROAR and a great view of the belly of the 747… almost no glimpse of Endeavour itself. But… the experience was still: priceless.

When I arrived at 9:30 (2 hours before scheduled arrival), the train station was already nearly full. Signs greeted guests at the turnstiles announcing that today would be special.

NASA had chosen to keep the exact route of flight secret. A quick check of Disney sources produced 5 different answers regarding route. Cast Members were initially told from the south, due north, straight up Main Street – several CM’s produced that answer. Another CM said south to north up Harbor Blvd with a sweeping turn that would start over the Park. A member of Disney’s fire department told me that NASA had assured the safety team that the route would be North-to-South down Walnut Street (2 blocks west of the park- perhaps avoiding safety issues of a park flyover but making any photo impossible). Huge crowds already topped the Mickey/Friends parking structure. News crews were setup in Cars Land (uh, oh – it’s always better to be where the news guys are).

45 minutes prior, the local CBS TV released a NASA map showing a route that would be North to South over Angel stadium – avoiding a direct path over Disney at all (double uh, oh). Finally, a Cast Member appeared at the train station (T minus 15 minutes) indicating that this was not a ‘Disney event’, that they truly did not know the route of flight and that they had been informed that the ‘…castle would not be involved (her words) in any NASA photos…’ (triple uh, oh). The trains station crowd was, understandably, confused. As everyone attempted to use the web on their smart phones, often problematic at Disneyland, data connectivity shutdown.

At T Minus 6 minutes, Disney ran a park-wide PA announcement inviting guests to ‘turn your attention to the skies..’ – truly very similar to the old fireworks intro. Attractions drained, Main Street packed – any chance of smart phone data connectivity was lost. Over a cast member radio, I heard a command to shutdown steam train operation during the flyover. The doors to the train station behind me immediately locked. In the absence of data connectivity, several folks were texting or calling local friends watching on TV – someone called out ‘over Norwalk’ – OMG, this wasn’t consistent with ANY of the forecasted routes – brain races to think about moving my position. Seconds later, a giant roar – but nothing visible. The 747 emerged from behind trees, traveling out of the west, northwest and flew directly over the train station towards Santa Ana. (So, from the train station, imagine the 747 emerging from those giant trees behind City Hall).

An absolutely terrible view… the crowd roared with pride… the loudest I’ve ever heard … a jammed Main Street all applauding and hollering –and it was a PERFECT experience!!!! About 2 minutes later, Endeavour made a second pass, this time east-to-west near the convention center – not in view if you were in Disneyland.

Training for the 20th Anniversary WDW Marathon - Week Three

Well, I have to say week two went MUCH better than week one even with all the associated work and...

Well, I have to say week two went MUCH better than week one even with all the associated work and school crazies! Although I will never be a fan of using the indoor hamster wheel for a workout, the opportunity to take advantage of a very nice hotel gym is a benefit that cannot be overlooked or downplayed. It sure beats running at O’Hare Airport and/or running in the dark in downtown Chicago. And I did get to play outdoors on Saturday in the beautiful Pacific Northwest fall weather.

Given the fact I’m the majority of my long runs will be alone and unsupported except for an occasional neighborhood lemonade stand, I have finally given in and purchased a fuel belt to carry supplies while I’m out on the road. I tried my first run with the belt and honestly I feel like a camel. Or a pack mule. Or both. This will definitely take some getting used to. On the plus side, having both chocolate Cliff Shots and water on board sure came in handy during my long Saturday run. On the other side, it’s going to take a few runs to learn to gracefully extract said nummy chocolate Cliff Shots and water bottles without looking like I’m wrestling with myself as I run down the road. Patience and practice will hopefully pay off.

The question I’ve been researching this week is whether or not to wear my new fuel belt during the marathon. From previous half marathons I’ve noticed participants wearing everything from belts to backpacks but in the past I’ve only carried along a half-full water bottle which I drop at the first water station. The marathon distance will no doubt be different but given runDisney events are usually very well stocked all along the course is carrying your own beverage necessary? Apparently it’s a ‘depends’ kind of answer.

If you have a preference for a special beverage that is not served along the course (or have not trained with the beverage d’jour that is offered) then yes, carrying your own supply may help alleviate potential, ahem, “stomach distress” that may occur if you try something new. Depending on your pace, there may also be a good argument for going ‘byob’ so as to make sure that those in the first corrals haven’t snagged it all which may happen at less well run events but I’ve never heard runDisney having that issue (a certain Rock n’ Roll event held last December does however come to mind). Any votes for or against bringing your own beverage along on the marathon from my fellow running fools?

Training Plan

Week Three in the training program will be challenging with travel for both work and to Orlando for the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend but I’m up to the challenge. Can’t wait for next weekend in Florida!

•	Monday September 24th – mybarre3.com / rest
•	Tuesday September 25th – 3 mile run / mybarre3.com
•	Wednesday September 26th – travel day / rest
•	Thursday September 27th – travel day /mybarre3.com
•	Friday September 28th – 3 mile run / mybarre3.com / screaming down rides at WDW
•	Saturday September 29th – 5k (a.m.) / screaming down rides at WDW/ 10 Miler (p.m.)
•	Sunday September 30th – recovering from early morning end to 10 Miler party /enjoying one last tour around the park (with the inaugural medal of course)/ travel (evening)

Total miles for the week: 16.1

Hmmmm of the Week: I recently read in The Runner’s World Big Book of Marathon and Half Marathon Training that running on a treadmill can not only bore you to death but can potentially cause real physical issues as well. The authors state “When you’re outside, your calf muscles produce 90% of the power needed to propel you forward. On the treadmill, the force is cut in half meaning the smaller stabilizer muscles in the lower limbs don’t have to work as hard. If you’ve been on a treadmill and then suddenly start running outside, your calves won’t be accustomed to generating that much force making you vulnerable to injuries such as plantar fasciitis.” Ok. Good to know. I’m going to make sure my long weekend runs are outside on the roads no matter the weather!

As always, drop me a note to tell me how your marathon training is coming along or if you have suggestions of things to try. I hope to see some of you this weekend in Walt Disney World at the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend!

Well, if I’m going to fall off the workout wagon, it was probably best to get it over with in week...

Well, if I’m going to fall off the workout wagon, it was probably best to get it over with in week one so I wouldn’t keep worrying about it happening later in the program. I made it through my planned Barre3 workouts (both in studio and via the web) but my scheduled Wednesday run was flattened by a work ‘emergency’ that turned out to be much ado about nothing. Unfortunately, the very late night pulling together the “have to have them by morning” presentations plus keeping up with schoolwork left me with no time to hit the hotel gym for the mid-week 5 mile run. I hope your week went better than mine and you successfully completed your own Week One training goals.

On the plus side, it was wonderful getting out on the roads in the cool early morning hours while back at home over the weekend. Fall is always my favorite time of year for running; there is something magical running outdoors when the trees are turning and there is a crisp feel to the air. My old hometown running group in Spokane, WA, The Sunday Slugs (named that because we get there…eventually) continues to run one of my favorite routes from the Manito Park Duck Pond, up tree-lined Manito Boulevard, across High Drive, and back down to the park. No matter the season the route is incredible but in the fall it is truly spectacular.

This weekend however the Slugs took a different route. They had the honor of unveiling an etched granite marker on Spokane’s Centennial Trail in memory of one of the founding Slugs and one of my dearest friends, Howard Stamp, who passed away last December. We put in many miles on the road together and I could always count on him to push me to do my best. Howard and I finished many Lilac Bloomsday 12ks (he usually beat me), hundreds of local 5 and 10ks and even took in a few crazy Bay to Breaker 12k events in San Francisco together. Although he left us last year, I still chat with him occasionally while out on a run just to keep him in the loop with the latest. Howard always encouraged me to try new running challenges; I know he will still be pushing me to do my best this January at my first marathon.

My goal is to get back on track in Week Two. I've had to move my long run up to Saturday to accommodate an early travel day on Sunday but otherwise it's business as usual.

• Monday September 17th – travel day / myBarre3.com / rest
• Tuesday September 18th – 3 mile run / myBarre3.com / rest
• Wednesday September 19th – 5 mile run
• Thursday September 20th – travel day / rest
• Friday September 21st – 3 mile run / Barre3 class
• Saturday September 22nd – 7 mile run / Barre3 class
• Sunday September 23rd – travel day / myBarre3.com / rest

Total Miles for the Week: 18

Hmmmm of the Week: With my abdominal muscles merrily screaming from three intense Barre3 workouts in a row this weekend, it’s a good reminder that core stability is essential for runners because it prevents pain, reduces wear and tear of joints, and reduces the chances of damage to muscles and bones. Is core strengthening an important part of your training program?

Drop me a note to tell me how your marathon training is going or if you have suggestions of things that have helped you successfully get to the finish line! The more we share, the better marathon we will all have. Keep in mind the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler is just two short weeks away. Hope to see many of you there!

All I can say is ‘wow’. The speed in which all the runDisney events are selling out this year must have the pencils at Disney Corporate turning cartwheels. Even with the increased entry fees as well as the addition of more runners (25k are signed up for the marathon alone!), the demand has been pretty incredible. Let’s take a look at all the events and see what remains open and what has officially called ‘done’.

We have our first registration update for you! As of September 10, runDisney is reporting registration for the 2013 Princess Half Marathon (the 5th anniversary edition) is officially at 51% capacity. This bodes well for a quick sellout as the 2012 Princess Half Marathon didn’t hit 51% for 3 months and 2 days! And that was after both prices increases! Speaking of, if you are thinking about signing up for the Princess, keep in mind that the first price increase for the 2013 event happens September 26th when the entry fee jumps from $140 per person to $155! It will be very interesting to see if the anniversary medal (and where IS that new medal?) will drive the event to an even quick sellout once it is revealed.
Well that was fast! As of September 10th, runDisney is reporting that the 2013 Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge is officially SOLD OUT! When told about registration closing, one friend commented “Gees, I signed up for the Goofy last year in December and it wasn’t even close to selling out yet!” What a difference a year makes.
Not to be outdone by the Goofy, the 2013 Walt Disney World Half Marathon also sold out months faster than last year. Don’t know what is driving the difference in registration this year but it’s an amazing change from the 2012 event which if you remember was actually the 15th anniversary event.
Maybe it’s the 20th anniversary medal. Maybe the idea of completing a full marathon with the largest field ever (25k) was too irresistible. Whatever the reason, the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon sold out faster than any year back to 2008 when it sold out in seven months, 15 days (and was capped at 18k).

Even the 2013 Disney Family Fun Run 5k couldn’t resist a big registration bump this week. runDisney is reporting that registration has reached 64% capacity which is a 4% point bump in just four days!
As was previously noted in a follow-up to the July blog posting, the 2012 Wine & Dine Half Marathon officially sold out July 28th! Given the relay is not returning in 2012 (meaning no shorter distance for runners), the sellout timing is pretty much on target from last year.

2011 event sellout time to beat: 3 months, 28 days (the Relay sold out in 4 months, 17 days)
With only 59 days left until the 2012 Mickey’s Jingle Jungle 5k, registration had better pick up if it’s going to sell out! As of September 10, registration is currently at 61% capacity. Not sure why this one is lagging behind all the other fast-selling runDisney events but it’s definitely one that is struggling.

Registration opened February 14, 2012

We’re 17 days from the inaugural Twilight Tower of Terror weekend and registration for the 2012 Disney’s Happy Haunted 5k Trail Run is closing in on selling out. As of September 10, runDisney is reporting registration is at 91% capacity. That’s a healthy bump from five days ago when it was sitting at 85%. It’s been a much slower sell than most of the other runDisney 5k events but if it’s a successful event, hopefully positive press will drive a faster sellout next year.

2012 current registration duration as of September 10, 2012: 6 months, 28 days

2012 Disney Villians Hollywood Bash – September 29, 2012 @ 10:30 p.m. to September 30, 2012 @ 4:00 a.m.
Registration opened April 5, 2012

While the glow of completing my 50th half marathon continues on, it’s time to put away the 2012...

While the glow of completing my 50th half marathon continues on, it’s time to put away the 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon finisher’s medal and turn my efforts to the NEXT BIG THING – the 20th Anniversary Walt Disney World Marathon. This is not my first full marathon target; in 2007 I had plans to run in the 15th anniversary WDW Marathon in January 2008 but the unexpected passing of my mother in October of that year put a halt to just about everything. It took me almost a year to try a distance run again and I was content for the next few years to stay at the half distance. But anniversary runDisney events are always special occasions and even with all of the craziness of life (including a weekly 3400 round-trip air mile work commute) the 20th anniversary WDW marathon seemed like the perfect opportunity to give it another go.

So, here we are at Week One. My goal for this week is to simply get in a few good miles and get used to a regular workout cadence. I’ve been cleared by my doctor to train for a marathon (as should everyone who is attempting any distance event) and have looked at a variety of training programs to find the one that is best for me. After a lot of research, I’ve settled on a mix between Hal Higdon’s Beginner Half Marathon training program and the Beginner Marathon Plan from The Runner’s World big Book of Marathon and Half Marathon Training. Given my travel schedule, my long runs will vary from Saturday to Sunday and will peak with a single 20 mile run at week 16. Unfortunately, given my location during the week, most of the miles Monday – Thursday will be on a hotel treadmill where I’ll be doing my best impression of a hamster on a wheel.

I will also be cross-training in a variety of ways with Barre3 classes (both online at mybarre3.com and in-studio) as my primary cross-training format. Barre3 incorporates movements from yoga, Pilates, and ballet and is a surprisingly challenging workout (just ask the fire fighters in my class). It targets core and upper body strength (which will help in those last few tough miles) as well as improving flexibility of which I am severely challenged. Running (as well as a love of 4” stiletto shoes) has a nasty side-effect of tightening up calves and hamstrings which can cause a laundry-list of injuries; staying injury-free is the most important goal of the next eighteen weeks. I’ll do whatever it takes to earn that gorgeous 20th anniversary WDW marathon medal!

So, without further ado, here is my training schedule for Week One:

•	Monday September 10th – Barre3 class / rest
•	Tuesday September 11th – 3 mile run / Barre3 class
•	Wednesday September 12th – 5 mile run
•	Thursday September 13th – travel / rest
•	Friday September 14th – 3 mile run / Barre3 class
•	Saturday September 15th – Barre3 class / rest
•	Sunday September 16th – 5 mile run / Barre3 class

Total Miles for the Week: 16

Hmmmm of the Week: I just read a quick blurb in the October 2012 Women’s Health magazine that wearing a cooling glove while running can help improve performance by sending cool blood back to the heart which may help decrease fatigue. May have to freeze a water bottle and give it a try!

Drop me a note to tell me how your marathon training is going or if you have suggestions of things that have helped you successfully get to the finish line! The more we share, the better marathon we will all have. See you on the roads!

I don't know about you but unless I have goals to work towards, I'm not a happy camper. Having just completed a major running goal of running the 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon as my 50th half marathon event, it's time to turn to an even bigger goal. The marathon. A full marathon. 26.2 miles of challenge. And what better marathon event to shoot for than the 20th Anniversary of the Walt Disney World Marathon in January 2013.

Although I have completed hundreds of running events in the 20+ years I've been on the road, one thing I've not done well with in the past few years is training. Like many of you, I'm balancing work, school (a Masters program), and a hectic home life. I'm a consultant and I currently travel each week from my home on the west coast to support my client in Chicago so I'm at the airport and on planes for hours each week not to mention living at hotels Sunday thru Thursday. With this schedule, it's easy to shove training for a run to the side. While I've so far managed to get away with this for half marathons, there is no way I can do so for a full marathon without risking major damage.

So, I'm starting an official 18-week training program (a modified beginner/ intermediate schedule from Hal Higdon) on Monday September 10th. Each Sunday I'll post my training schedule for the week here in this blog as well as provide commentary on how the previous week's training went. By going public with my training, I'm hopeful that I will have a better chance of keeping on schedule and task as most of us tend to become more accountable when others are watching. I'm also hoping that many of you will join along with me in training for your first (or your 50th) marathon and will share your successes, suggestions, and setbacks here as well.

I may be a running fool but hopefully by the end of this challenge I will no longer be a foolish runner! The fun starts here Sunday September 9th.

We are just a few days away from the 7th running of the Disneyland Half Marathon and 5k! Are you ready for the fun and the crowds? With 17,000 runners and their support crews in town it should be quite the busy weekend in the parks. I can’t wait to run the 5k on Saturday through Carsland for the first time as well as check out the new half marathon course through DCA on Sunday.

As a Disneyland Legacy Runner, I’ve dusted out my Inaugural 2006 Disneyland Half Marathon t-shirt to wear on Friday (it’s the one time of year it’s out of the closet) and ran my 49th half, the Eugene Women’s Half Marathon, on Sunday to prep for this coming weekend’s events. Yup, the 2012 Disneyland Half will be my 50th half marathon!

Here’s wishing safe travels and happy running to everyone at Disneyland this weekend! Stop back here on Monday to share your stories and pictures of the 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon weekend of events. And enjoy this week's By the Numbers update!
I've received emails from a few MP runDisney event friends who received a nasty surprise when their confirmation inquiry returned the message "We could not find a registration with the email address [ ] for 2013 Walt Disney World® Marathon" yet they have payment receipts and confirmation emails from Active.com. Both runDisney and Active.com support have been contacted and we'll hopefully have a happy ending for all very soon.

In the meantime, make sure YOUR registration is confirmed today!

This isn’t quite the By the Numbers report I expected to provide this week. Wine & Dine still has spots available and the big mover was the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon (and that was only a 3% bump). The good news is if you have been a major procrastinator you still have time to sign up for any or all of the upcoming WDW runDisney events!

As of July 23rd, runDisney is reporting registration for the 2013 Never Land 5k has reached 59%. It’s still moving along at a good pace and should still easily sell out faster than the inaugural 2012 5k event.

Continuing on a snail’s pace, runDisney is reporting registration for the 2013 Goofy is now at 87% capacity. We’re still easily on target to smash last year’s sellout time; let’s hope the pace picks up in the next couple of weeks!

This must have been what everyone was signing up for at the Rock n Roll Chicago expo. runDisney is reporting that registration for the 2013 WDW Marathon jumped 3% in the past week and is now at 75% capacity. I wonder how many first-timers like me are signed up just so we can get the 20th anniversary medal…

First price increase: May 23, 2012

Final price increase: July 18, 2012

Here’s a surprise. I thought for sure that we would be at capacity for the 2012 Wine & Dine Half Marathon but we moved just one 1% since our last update. We’re up to 96% which is great but after all the craziness at the RnR Chicago runDisney booth, I thought this one would be done and gone.

Now that the 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon is officially sold out, it's time to turn our attention back to the other great runDisney events still looking for participants. The big news this week is a large jump in 2012 Wine & Dine Half Marathon numbers. Check out all the updates below!
__________________________________________________ ________

2013 Expedition Everest Challenge – May 4, 2013

I’m currently waiting to hear from runDisney on the official registration opening date. Hopefully I’ll have an update next week.

2012 event sellout time to beat: 3 months, 1 day

2013 Princess Half Marathon – Sunday February 24, 2013 @ 5:35 a.m.

Registration opened July 10th, 2012

We’re open for business and still awaiting the first runDisney registration update. It took 3 months last year before registration bumped over 50%; let’s hope the 5th anniversary of the Princess Half Marathon will move things along much quicker this time.

2012 event sellout time to beat: 7 months, 16 days

2013 current registration duration as of July 17th: 7 days

2013 Disney Royal Family 5k – Saturday February 23, 2013 @ 6:30 a.m.

Registration opened July 10th, 2012

It took 5 months, 9 days for the 2012 Disney Royal Family 5k to register its first update so no worries yet at this point.

Officially SOLD OUT July 11, 2012!

2012 event sellout time to beat: 4 months
2013 Never Land 5k – Saturday January 19, 2013 @ 5:45 a.m.

Registration opened June 12, 2012

As of July 16th, runDisney is reporting registration for the 2013 Never Land 5k has reached 56%. It is moving MUCH faster than in 2012 when it took 5 months, 25 days to reach the same milestone! Maybe moving from a night race to early morning wasn’t such a bad idea.

2012 event sellout time to beat: 9 months, 1 day

2013 current registration duration as of July 17th: 1 month, 6 days

2013 Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge – Saturday January 12th & Sunday January 13th, 2013

First price increase: June 20, 2012

Second price increase: September 26, 2012 (if needed)

I would have to guess that the recently announced runDisney / Runner’s World VIP Challenge hasn’t really sped up marathon weekend registration although we’re still way ahead of last year’s pace. As of July 16th, runDisney is reporting the by-now typical 1% increase for the week putting registration for the Goofy at 86%.

2012 event sellout time to beat: 9 months, 5 days

2013 current registration duration as of July 16th: 3 months, 7 days

2013 Walt Disney World Half Marathon – Saturday January 12, 2012 @ 5:30 a.m.

First price increase: June 20, 2012

Second price increase: September 26, 2012 (if needed)

Like clockwork we have another 2% registration uptick since last week! As of July 16th, runDisney is reporting capacity for the 2013 Walt Disney World Half Marathon is now at 63%.

2012 event sellout time to beat: 9 months, 5 days
First price increase: June 20, 2012

Second price increase: September 26, 2012 (if needed)

We’ve slowed down a bit but as of July 16th, runDisney is reporting marathon registration has reached 72%. Come on – it’s the 20th anniversary running! There’s a special commemorative medal just waiting for the finishers… :D

2013 Disney Family Fun Run 5k (WDW) – Friday January 11, 2013 @ 6:30 a.m.

As of July 16th, still no registration numbers to report for the 2013 Disney Family Fun Run 5k.

First price increase: May 23, 2012

Final price increase: July 18, 2012

Looks like that final price increase will come into play on July 18th (get ready to fork out an extra $25) but runDisney is reporting a heck of a good registration jump from 86% to 92% in just one week so we can’t be too far off from calling this one baked!

Registration opened February 14, 2012

Talk about slooooow registration. runDisney is reporting that registration for the 2012 Disney’s Happy Haunted 5k Trail Run has reached 58% capacity. It took a month to move 2%. Makes you wonder if runDisney is a bit worried about this one. Is it the venue (the ESPN Sports Complex) or the idea of a morning trail run that is holding back registration? Or, with the half marathon selling out so quickly, have potential participants forgotten about the 5k…?

2012 current registration duration as of July 17th: 5 months, 4 days

While the runDisney site may still show 99% capacity, a quick try of registration takes users to a screen where they receive the following sad message: Sorry: Online registration is no longer available for this event!
For any of my fellow data nerds, the numbers came out as follows:

2012 Tinker Bell Half Marathon sold out in 4 months

2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon sold out in 1 month!

The previous runDisney sellout (at least since I've been keeping score) was the 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon which sold out in 1 month, 2 days. Yes indeed, we have a new sellout champion!

Congrats to all the 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon registrants. We will see you in Disneyland next January. For those that didn't make it in (and are now pounding their keyboards in frustration) we can hope that runDisney will open a wait list very shortly. If they do, you'll see it here first!

Stay tuned here for all the latest runDisney stats and registration updates.

Registration opened July 10th, 2012

It's official! Registration for the 2013Princess Half Marathon is now open. As a Perfect Princess, I've secured my spot in my 5th running of the pink. Any other Perfect Princesses out there?

2013 Disney Royal Family 5k – Saturday February 23, 2013 @ 6:30 a.m.

Registration opened July 10th, 2012

If you haven't yet tried a runDisney 5k, this would be the one not to miss. It's not as early in the morning as the Never Land 5k, you won't battle the crowds of the WDW Marathon Weekend, it's not sold out like the Disneyland 5k, and it's not the same day as the Wine & Dine Half Marathon. And the run around the lake at EPCOT can't be beat!

And if you think it's a serious run, think again. Where else would you see guys in tutu's and tiaras dancing to the pre-race DJ?
At 94% capacity, I don't expect registration for the 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon to last until Friday. Now is the time to guarantee a spot to earn the coveted fairy wing medal!

2013 Expedition Everest Challenge – May 4, 2013

Still no official information available on the 2013 event but hopefully we’ll have a few details soon. In 2012, the 5th anniversary edition sold out in just over 3 month so we’ll be waiting to see if interest remains high on an ‘off’ year.

Continuing on record pace, capacity for the 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon has now reached 92%! At this rate baring some unforeseen hiccup in registration, we should see the 2012 event record of 4 months smashed and may still yet beat the 1 month, 2 day 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon record. Stay tuned!
2013 Princess Half Marathon – Sunday February 24, 2013 @ 5:35 a.m.

Registration opens July 10th, 2012

Calling all Perfect Princesses! It’s been five years since the inaugural Princess Half Marathon and it’s time to celebrate the anniversary. Registration for the 5th annual Princess Half Marathon opens July 10th at 9:00 a.m. PDT / 12:00 p.m. EDT and will set you back $140 if you register prior to September 25th. Registration closed just a week prior to the 2012 event; will the lure of an anniversary medal be enough to drive registration faster for 2013?
2013 Disney Royal Family 5k – Saturday February 23, 2013 @ 6:30 a.m.

Registration opens July 10th, 2012

Saturday morning in EPCOT is always fun and it’s even more enjoyable when the park is only open for Disney Royal Family 5k participants. Registration for the 2013 event will set you back $55 ($60 if you bring a wee one in a stroller). While runDisney always keeps the theme of the 5k a secret until registration is already in full swing, I’m going to be BRAVE enough to shoot a Bodkin point in the direction of Merida and the Brave Pixar bunch. Any other options you can think of?
2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon – Sunday January 20, 2013 @ 5:00 a.m.

Registration opened June 12, 2012

First price increase: July 18, 2012

Continuing on record pace, capacity for the 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon has now reached 88%. For those of you keeping score, registration jumped from 0 to 88% in 25 days! I think it’s safe to say that runDisney has a HUGE West Coast hit on their hands! We’ll see if the pace continues once the Princess Half Marathon opens July 10th and/or we reach the first price increase on July 18th.

Registration opened April 10, 2012

As of July 2nd, runDisney reported the Goofy Race and a Half Challenge has reached 84% capacity. A 1% jump in a week isn’t great but at least it’s still moving. Even with the slow week, we’re still on target to close much earlier than in 2012.

We’ve picked up two percentage points since our last check a week ago. As of July 2nd, runDisney is reporting registration for the 2013 WDW Half Marathon has reached 59% capacity. I will say it will be hard to beat the special 15th anniversary medal in 2012 but I’m sure runDisney will do their usual outstanding job at giving us something we all want to add to the collection.
Registration opened 3/13/2012

The pace may be slowing but we are edging closer to hitting full capacity for the 2012 Wine & Dine Half Marathon. As of July 2nd, runDisney is reporting registration is now at 82% capacity. We are just over two weeks from the final price increase which means if you continue to dawdle it will cost you an extra $25 (from $160 to $185) if you decide to register after July 18th. Come on – that will buy you half a really nice runDisney shirt!
