  1. Dopey Challenge Training - Week Thirteen

"Runners don't get rained out, they get rained on." –Unknown

I stood on the front porch of my house this morning and cursed my decision to move my long run from Saturday to Sunday. Rain, rain, and more rain had fallen most of the night and would continue to fall throughout the day. The winds, with gusts up to 20mph, rattled the Christmas ornaments and lights hung on our leafless Magnolia tree in the front yard. Welcome to winter in the west side of the Pacific Northwest. ...
  2. Dopey Challenge - Week Ten

"No matter how old I get, the race remains one of life's most rewarding experiences. My times become slower and slower, but the experience of the race is unchanged: each race a drama, each race a challenge, each race stretching me in one way or another, and each race telling me more about myself and others."
    --Dr. George Sheehan

Last Saturday evening during the Wine & Dine Half Marathon, I had a young runner pass ...

  3. Dopey Challenge Training - Week Nine

“Training is doing your homework. It’s not exciting. More often than not it’s tedious. There is certainly no glory in it. You will notice that the longest run this week is ten miles which is a significant drop from last week’s 16 miler on Sunday. These step-back weeks are as important to the training program as the distance weeks as they allow your body to more easily adjust to increases in the weekly mileage by giving your body a chance to rest and to heal from all the long hours on the road. Generally ...
  5. Dopey Challenge Training - Week Seven

"Hills. We love them. We hate them. They make us strong. They make us weak. Today I chose to embrace hills." - Hal Higdon, running writer and coach

Ah, San Francisco. Home of the Golden Gate Bridge. Football’s 49-niners. Foggy weather. And of course, more hills than any city should legally be allowed to have. Last Sunday I had the opportunity to run the 2013 Nike Women’s Half Marathon in the City by the Bay as part of Team MousePlanet and it was a great reminder that hill ...
