You mention a tracking app. Do you upload and keep a spreadsheet or online record of your runs?

I always drink chocolate milk (2%, usually) after running. I can't usually eat any solid food for several hours, especially if the run is more than five miles, so chocolate milk works as something that feels substantial but is easy on my stomach.
Drum roll please! The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend schedule of events is 100% sold out. Hopefully you were able to register for all the events you wanted. I'll be at the Halloween Party Friday night (look for a set of mouse ears with an orange witch hat), the 5k Saturday morning (wearing bright orange braids with a pumpkin stem on top), and the half marathon Saturday night (looking all the world like a runner). If you see me, make sure to say 'hi' to the RunningFool!
Thanks for sharing your Endeavour stories! It must have been the most memorable of experiences that neither of you will forget. I did have a very cool Shuttle experience a few years ago when the Alaska flight I was on heading down to Orlando diverted enough where we could literally see the Shuttle just after takeoff coming through the clouds. It was incredible!
Endeavour flew low almost directly over my house in Palo Alto on its way to the flyover at NASA-Ames / Moffett Field in Mountain View. I've been lucky enough to witness two Shuttle launches (both from WDW) and now this. Incredible.
I was there that day as well, arriving at the parking structure just before 10am. From the parking lot, I saw folks up on the top level of the structure. I figured I'd give the park a chance first and if it was crazy crowded inside, I'd have time to return here and join them up on the roof. You're last paragraph sums up my thoughts as well. Well, except for the "PERFECT" part since I REALLY wanted a shot of the shuttle with the castle. I was standing in the hub and for two hours with the rest of the folks around me. There was never any CM contact with us while we were there, so we'd all talked to each other and by the time the noon hour arrived, we'd talked ourselves into believing heresay and fantasy rumors that the flight path would roll directly across Main Street USA. HA! Here's video from my point of view. I padded it out with earlier scenes just so I could show the castle. Still missing the chance for that "perfect" photo. But still, I can say "I was there!"
Just a quick update. As of this morning (Sunday September 23rd) the 5k remains at 99% capacity. The runDisney Kids Races are now also at 99% capacity and the Disney Villains Hollywood Bash is at 96%. Don't delay - 'drop in' reservations for the inaugural Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend are going fast!
I totally agree it can be overwhelming when starting a new workout program. There are a LOT of options in books and on the web with many targeted specifically to runners. The main point to keep in mind is to not start a new program of any kind right before an event. The last thing you need is to be sore and/or injure something when the rest of your training has been going well! So none of this before the Twilight Tower of Terror 10 Miler and I would be cautious with only a month before Wine & Dine. I would also recommend keeping a workout log of your strength training along with one for running to keep tabs on your progress. As with running, makes the 'not so good days' a little better with a reminder of the 'wow, I really hit it' days. I've secured a short core exercise program and a more extensive core workout from Runners World that you might find interesting and easy to follow. Most of the moves such as the plank are pretty standard with any core strength program and are more challenging than they appear. I will say that I would NOT try two sets of either of these programs right off the bat but would recommend you slowly ease into them. If you are doing any strength training on a run workout day, make sure you do it after your run /walk as the cardio training is your top priority. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/...1905-0,00.html Beginner Core Strength Routine http://www.runnersworld.com/article/...2756-0,00.html A Core Workout Let me know what you think! I meant to integrate more targeted strength into my training, but just don't seem to be able to figure out how to do it consistently. I'm overwhelmed by the options.
Ok, just did a google search. Most of the 'recent studies' are using a system that you could NOT run with. They're actually creating a slight vacuum on the hand to promote the heat transfer. There'd be a concern that running with an ice bottle in your hand would cause blood vessels to constrict, which would defeat the purpose of cooling your blood faster. Here's a link to a press release about a study (it's written in English, not research-ese, thankfully, but has a lot of info): http://news.stanford.edu/news/2012/a...ch-082912.html
I'm going to add to your hmmm. I have issues with my hands swelling when I walk. I am SUPER diligent about keeping my elbows bent and fingers cupped, and switch my water bottle between hands (though do carry in preferentially in one hand). It seems to be worse when it's warmer, but everything I've read has said it's not specifically related to heat, humidity, hydration, or electrolytes. But I'm thinking a cooling glove might help! I really don't want to carry a frozen bottle (just thinking of the condensation on the outside of it is making me wipe my hands on my pants leg!) - but if I can find a reasonably priced option, I think this might be worth the try! And it's getting me to think that maybe even just wearing tight gloves (isotoner style tight) might be helpful, too - maybe even with a small icepack on the back of the hand? Because everyone wears their gloves when the heat index is approaching double digits
Ladies and gentlemen - we have achieved a sellout! As of September 5, 2012, runDisney is reporting that registration for the 2013 WDW Marathon (the 20th anniversary edition) is now closed. It has officially sold out and in close to half the time it took in 2011! 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon – Sunday January 13, 2013 @ 5:30 a.m. Registration opened April 10, 2012 First price increase: June 20, 2012 SOLD OUT! 2012 event sellout time to beat: 9 months, 5 days 2013 event sellout time: 4 months, 27 days
Just a quick update. Registration for the 2013 WDW Marathon is now at 92% capacity. That was a quick 2% jump! I would be very surprised if we don't see a major jump (if not sell out) at the Disneyland Half Marathon expo this weekend.
I was curious so I contacted Active.com myself. The agent I spoke with made it abundantly clear that this was not an Active.com issue and that I needed call runDisney customer support. After speaking to an absolutely wonderful and delightful runDisney customer service agent (would we expect anything less from Disney...?), here's the scoop. The confirmation message could be caused by one of two things. Imputing your information incorrectly (i.e., your email address) could throw a false confirmation since you can't be found in the system. runDisney can easily fix that for you. If you registered as part of a special promotion (such as the Disney Visa offer), the company that ran the promotion may not have yet download those registrations into the runDisney confirmation system. This, of course, would cause the "we have no record" message. If you do not have a copy of your registration receipt, I understand runDisney agents are able to track receipts and will be kind enough to confirm you are registered as well as send a new receipt vie fax or email. This little exercise does prove what I've recommended to fellow race participants for years is correct: always, always, always check before you leave (if possible) AND bring a printed copy of your registration confirmation to packet pickup with you as well as any other receipts for commemorative merchandise, race retreats, etc you may have ordered. If something happens to the run database or you get onsite and find you're not showing up in the system, having that printed information on board can help turn a potentially really sad experience into a magical one. Foolishly yours...the RunningFool
I got the same message just a few minutes ago. I'm not going to worry about it right now, but I did send a message off to active.com to ask if there is an issue with their system.
It is official! As of this morning July 28th, runDisney is no doubt thrilled to announce that the 2012 Wine & Dine Half Marathon is officially SOLD OUT! As usual, limited entries are still available through Charity Groups and travel operators. Hope to see everyone there in November for another exciting night run through WDW.
Another day, another click closer to closing out the 2012 Wine & Dine Half Marathon. As of Wednesday July 25th, runDisney is reporting registration has reached 98% capacity. If you're STILL procrastinating, NOW is the time to get yourself registered!
