View Full Version : Going to Mexico? Don't forget your shots!

For those of you west coast folks who are going on a DCL Mexican Cruise, don't forget to have your shots before you go. Call your doctor, or call your 'Travel Medicine' department. Tell them where you're going and ask them if your current.
Sometimes we forget that travels to foreign countries carry extra risk. And going via a Disney ship, makes us feel even safer. But hepatitis and tetanus don't care. :geek:
Andrew 04-18-2008, 03:12 PM Good point. My annual checkup is next week and I'll be sure to mention it -- along with asking for a Scopalamine prescription.

Dramamine doesn't work for you? If it does, they keep a locker full of it just outside the clinic door. It's available 24 hrs. If you can use it, it's one less thing to carry/worry about.
If you have other special medical issues, don't forget to fill out the medical form prior to embarkation. My youngest children have allergies, and it was recommended to list the allergies as medical conditions (e.g. beyond dietary restrictions). The rationale is that if they experienced reactions, ship's medical crew could ensure proper medication was stocked.
I don't know if you've cruised before, nor do I know your sensitivity to motion sickness. But given the size of the ship, and the stabilization technology, I don't think there is a high chance of motion sickness.

Twice, heavily, rather safe than sick.

The specific risk for Mexico would be Hepatitis A, which can be transmitted through food, particularly shellfish. The food served on the ship is probably not local, and probably safe. Hepatitis B is a greater risk in some other areas of the world, particularly Asia, but you have to start the series 6 months before you travel. Certainly, if you have not had a tetanus booster in the last 10 years, you want to get up to date with that. Check out www.cdc.gov for specific recommendations, for different countries.

Is there any way to know if you're predisposed to this reaction? My wife is prone to motion sickness, and not sure if she's taken Dramamine before. So I'm wondering if there is any way to figure this out short of doing a pre-cruise test.

I'm doing a pre-cruise test on Sunday. I figure that's the only way to tell.
Exactly - try some on an afternoon where, if it knocks you flat, it isn't a huge problem.
mulansgirl 04-25-2008, 01:55 PM Also if any of you are blood donors check with your blood bank to see if there are any areas to avoid. I know on the west bound repo there is one I believe it is Puerto Vallarta where they said stay in the city limits if you go out of them you cannot donate for a year. I was told to avoid jungle and ruin areas.

I was told the same thing about PV. Apparently it's a malaria zone. The blood center people really like my blood (semi rare type and lacking some antibody or other) so they wanted to make sure I knew about the restrictions.
I had my Hep A shot today. Tiny needle, barely even noticed it.
Two Bears 04-27-2008, 07:49 PM You may also want to try Bonine. It is very similar to Dramamine but does not knock you out.

I passed my test! I also USUALLY don't get drowsy from benadryl, so I'm probably not a good indication for others. Now just keeping my fingers crossed that I won't need to take it!
