We are thinking about staying at the Desert Palm Inn on the South end of the park. Where do we enter? At the Main Gate across from the IHOP or is there a way to enter on the South end?

But, from the Desert Palms, IF teh Timon lot is open, you can enter the Disneyland parking lot, and ride the parking lot tram to the front. BUT, this parking lot isn't open unless it is busy.

Afaik, the parking lot is always open to foot traffic. However, if the lot is closed the tram will not run. Checking the distances in google earth the distance from the Desert Palm to the tram is about .34 of a mile. Going directly up South Harbor to the DL entrance is about .64 of a mile.

It is shorter to the tram, but if you get there and it isn't working you have to walk all the way. I know because we had to do it. It was so much backtracking and cost a lot of time. I wish we had walked up Harbor.

Yup, if you walk from Desert Palm, through the south lot entrance, and then cross the lot you're looking at closer to a mile. Going directly up Harbor is just over half a mile. Last year we stayed across the way at the Hilton next to the convention center. We always used the south entrance whether the tram was running or not. During our stay the tram running only on the weekend.
