View Full Version : Bed Rails - What to Do
crazykids 04-05-2008, 11:41 PM I'm just now looking at more specific information for our Disneyland trip at the end of the month and I just realized I have no idea how to keep my 2 1/2 year old from falling out of bed. We just transitioned him from a crib to a regular full size bed in the last few weeks, but he still rolls all over the place. Luckily we have placed the mattress on the floor because there have been several times he has just rolled right off the edge and ended up sleeping on the floor. I'm afraid he'll hurt himself rolling off the bed at night. We would just use a port-a-crib or playpen, but he is too long. I thought about pillows on the floor, but wondered if there was a better idea for actually keeping him in bed.
Thank you!!
Drince88 04-06-2008, 04:14 AM Where are you staying?
MammaSilva 04-06-2008, 07:02 AM If it were me, I'd invest in an airmattress and put your little one on the floor on the airmatress. Even if they roll off the drop is the same or lower than a regular matress. I know you can get them at Target or Walmart that even have the electric pumps for very affordable pricepoints and then you can have it as an extra bed if you ever needed it on other trips or visits to family.
Shinku 04-06-2008, 11:03 AM I like mamasilva's answer! That was actually what I was going to suggest as well. Depending where you are staying, the front desk might be able to accomodate you, . you never know!
crazykids 04-06-2008, 11:40 AM We are staying at the Desert Inn and Suites in the Parlor A room. I'm not sure if bringing an air mattress would work since we will be flying, but I'll look into it since it is a great idea! We have one already so I'll have to see if fits in the suitcase. Thanks for the help!
tchatters 04-06-2008, 12:55 PM We have a kids Aerobed and it comes with a pump and a bag. It fits perfectly in a very small roll-on suitcase with room for a pillow and blanket and snuggly animal. We take it whenever we travel because DS has been sleeping on it for years. It has a rim too that makes it harder to roll out of onto the floor.
adriennek 04-06-2008, 02:47 PM We put chairs from the room next to the bed where our toddler sleeps - a make-do rail so to speak.

UsBurchs 04-06-2008, 08:27 PM I like Adrienne's idea. Seems simple enough. We've been using a pool noodle under my son's fitted sheet. We cut it to size (he has a toddler bed without rails). I suppose if you had time to stop at Target or Walmart when you get there, they might have one you could buy for cheap and try it out. However, this is really for kids who just need a little "nudge" to remind them the edge is near.
We also have a child's blow-up bed with a pump that we bought from onestepahead.com that we bring with us when traveling. It works perfectly and since he's used to it, he's comfortable sleeping in strange places.
Whatever you do, have your little one try it out for a few days at home to get used to the idea. It might make your vacation bed-times a bit easier.
gloria 04-07-2008, 12:19 PM I know the housekeepers don't like it, but in whichever hotel we stay, I always push the bed (even if it's 2 feet away) right next to the wall.
And even though my boys are 8 and 7, I still push up the chairs against the sides of the bed they share.

VickiC 04-08-2008, 09:14 PM Huh, mine both went to regular beds at around age 2 with no rails or anything and always have shared in hotel beds too and I can't recall either of them rolling out or me being worried about it or taking any extra precautions.
Malcon10t 04-08-2008, 11:07 PM Escape Artist was 18 the last time he fell out of bed (but I suspect he was pushed out of bed....)
crazykids 04-09-2008, 11:55 AM Thanks so much for all the replies! You have given me some great ideas. It's so nice to have more than one option. As for falling out of bed, my daughter didn't have any problems moving from a crib to a regular bed. No worries about her falling out. My son is a whole different story. He moves around so much at night there have been several times he has rolled off the bed or we'll find him half on and half off his bed. I have no idea why it's been this way, but he sure tries to use all the space on his bed each night, even turning himself around 180 degrees. I wish I didn't have to worry about him, but time has proven that we do have to worry.
Thanks again!!
JeffG 04-12-2008, 05:54 PM I don't think anyone has actually mentioned that you might actually try calling the hotel and asking them if they have bed rails available for loan or rental. Some hotels do and the likelihood is probably somewhat higher at a Disneyland-area hotel. Obviously, that would be the simplest solution, if they do have them.

hapyg0luky 04-13-2008, 01:24 AM I also have a very very wiggly 2 1/2 year old. We also put the chairs next to the bed. I ask for extra pillows and place those on the bed wedged up next to the chairs. We have also used our suitcases w/ the handles pulled up. Oh, and I roll up the comforters/bedspreads as a barrier too. We travel alot and so far he has never fallen off.

I don't know why I have never thought to ask. :D I'm going to do that on our next trip. Thanks
