View Full Version : Port Orleans French Quarter? Is it a good choice
tink1972 04-03-2008, 01:46 PM We will be going to POFQ in May the 15th thru 21st The last time we stayed on Disney Prop. it was at the WildernessLodge. The stay at WL was just my hubby and I in 2006
Our first time staying at Disney owned Hotel.
This time it will be our 18 yr Daughter and her friend(a Graduation Gift) my hubby and I . and we will be at POFQ.
Can anyone give me any advice. I am worry we will be disapointed.but $$ was the deciding factor as to where we stayed.
Andrew 04-03-2008, 02:08 PM Hotel choice is very subjective, but my wife and I love POFQ and have basically settled on that as our #1 choice.
rashiz 04-03-2008, 02:10 PM I've never stayed at Wilderness lodge, though recently stayed at a different delux (Beach Club) and honestly, with the exception of the pool at Beach Club and the proximity to Epcot, in a lot of ways I preferred the layout and feel of POFQ.
I actually stayed there when I went as a high school graduation gift (quite a few years ago now).
MrIncredible 04-03-2008, 04:28 PM We have stayed at both the WL and POFQ. Both are good choices--but they are different. As a moderate resort, POFQ rooms open to the outside, while WL rooms open to the lobby--that is the main physical difference. The rooms at POFQ were quite roomy, and we had a room facing the river (or is it a canal), which was very pleasant. The pool was undergoing renovation when we were there, but it looked every bit as fun as the pool at WL. There is no sit down dining at POFQ--the food court is decent, and if you are going to be eating at the parks--it doesn't much matter. The beignets at POFQ are great for breakfast--the lunch and dinner choices are not as good as the Roaring Forks at WL. While the layout of POFQ was very nice and compact, I thought the transportation at WL was better. Having said that, we would definitely stay at POFQ again--

runner110 04-04-2008, 07:17 AM We stayed at POFQ last May during the same week that you're going, and we had no complaints. Since then, we stayed a Carribean Beach and PO Riverside, and we had LOTS of complaints. At POFQ, we never heard another guest. The other moderates we too big, too crowded, and in the case of PO Riverside, we hardly slept for a week because of the noise (even after they moved our room). Based on that, POFQ is the only moderate that I'd stay in.
dahunter1129 04-04-2008, 02:40 PM Runner110, would you mind letting me in on what you felt were the problems at CBR? We are going back and forth between POFQ and CBR, so your imput would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
runner110 04-04-2008, 04:15 PM After the week we had at POR, CBR doesn't seem all that bad anymore. We were there (CBR) in August, and WDW was packed, including CBR. We didn't have a car, and were reliant on Disney buses. I've read lots of complaints from people all over WDW about the bus service, but we really hadn't experienced any problems until CBR. I don't think we ever waited less than 20 minutes for a bus, and since we were the first stop (Jamaica), we had to travel through the rest of the massive resort to the rests of the stops, which meant at least 20 minutes on the bus BEFORE leaving CBR. You would think that would mean that we got a seat, but the line to board the bus at CBR was sometimes so long that all of the seats filled up at the first stop. And coming back at night, for some reason we were always the last stop. So after waiting at a park for three buses to fill up before finally getting on one, we had to travel through CBR for 20 minutes to get to our stop. This happening pretty much every night. The resort itself is very pretty, and the room wasn't bad (at least we didn't hear anything from other rooms, unlike POR). But with so many guests, the facilities (Old Port Royale and the pool) just couldn't keep up. I don't think we ever got a chair at the pool or a table at the cafeteria. Another issue, which could have happened anywhere, involved the other resort guests. My wife broke her ankle a month before we went, and had a knee-high ski boot-like thing, and in the parks had a wheelchair. In a week of riding buses to and from CBR, only two people offered her a seat. I could understand this if her handicap was hard to see, but a woman with a ski boot on her leg, in shorts, in the middle of August, was pretty obvious. I can't blame the resort for this, but it added to a frustrating trip.
On the other hand, we really liked POFQ.
pj4963 04-04-2008, 05:44 PM I love the Port Orleans French Quarter. I wanted to stay there on my next trip April 22 but by the time my girlfriend got around to letting me know the dates she could get off work the AAA rate was sold out so we decided to do the Pop. The French Quarter is more compact and has beautiful landscaping. My niece and I stayed there during Super Soap weekend and loved it.Our room was on the first floor I think building 5. It wasn't a long walk to the transportation or the food court. They have a boat you can take to Downtown Disney instead of the bus be sure and check it out.
The rooms are not hugh but I think you will really enjoy the hotel. Be sure and post when you get back your thoughts.
Have a great time.

Pardon me for adding to Runner110's comments, but POFQ all the way! As mentioned, CBR is nice, but it's a massive resort. POFQ is the smallest resort at WDW. This may not be important to you, but it's very important to me. I don't want to stay at a giant compound. Although CBR has a sit down restaurant, it was recently panned quite hard by the Unofficial Guide.
I also think POFQ is the best value at WDW. I stayed there 7 nights a few years ago. My extended family and I all loved POFQ. I've also stayed at AKL and the food court at POFQ was better. The staff at POFQ are also first rate. My mom and my wife bought enough souveniers to fill a steamer trunk and the store handled every delivery flawlessly and with a Disney smile. I asked the CM at the store about returning a hat I bought at DAK which was too big. She said she was sure I could return it at Downtown Disney, then immediately picked up the phone and confirmed it.
While I was at POFQ I saw the manager walking around with a clipboard noting any tiny detail requiring attention. I notice almost everything and everything I saw her examining I hadn't noticed.
Thus, to me it's a no-brainer. POFQ! :D
tink1972 04-08-2008, 10:40 AM Thank you everyone who left comments for me. We have booked 5 night there. Only 37:22:23 to go but who counting. :)
