I am thinking that to reduce travelling times on our next trip we will use taxis a few times for meals. Can anyone help me out with likely costs (1 way - I am assuming a return journey will be the same price). I am talking taxi for these trips, not Town Car. Thanks.

POFQ to Animal Kingdom Lodge
POFQ to Fort Wilderness Campground
POFQ to Wilderness Lodge
Typhoon Lagoon to Magic Kingdom

I ****think**** that from POFQ to AKL was about $12-$15.

Taxis are expensive at WDW, but still way way less than a London Cab. ;)

Can't really help with the others except that I'd probably take the bus from Typhoon Lagoon to MK, a cab can only take you as far as the TTC.

I think just about everywhere on site is under $20. Fort Wilderness Campground should be the cheapest, though (unless the taxi driver goes a really long way - I did have one do that when I left the Contemporary for POFQ  It wasn't until he was way into the 'long' way that I noticed). But I don't think there is a long way from Fort Wilderness to POFQ unless they're being super creative.

I agree with Jenn about the Typhoon Lagoon - if there's a direct bus. I know there isn't a direct bus to the theme parks from DTD, but I don't know about the water parks. But I'm not sure I'd want to drag all my wet stuff to the MK...

The other thing I wanted to mention is to consider going only one way in the cab. Take a taxi to the other resort for breakfast, but just catch their bus to the theme park of the day. For dinner, if you're hitting a theme park or DTD either before or after, then just use their bus to/from dinner.

Thanks both - It's about buying down time at the hotel and having a good hours rest, rather than returning from a park and having to get back on the bus system almost immediately. Even if we did taxi both ways for each of these trips (I have taken on board the issue about a taxi from TL) it will be much cheaper than hiring a car (not to mention much less likely to end in divorce ;) )

Are you sure about that? Rental cars are really cheap at Orlando International Airport, one of the best rates in the country. You can get a midsize car for around $150 a week most times, which is a steal.

i can't help with the POFQ bit but i caught two taxis from WL to Epcot and it cost $12 plus tip both times. I also caught a taxi to DTD and that was $15.

Yes I think so. Judging by this we would spend $160 tops on taxis, and we'd have to pay a load of insurance on a car being from the UK (ours here won't cover it), and pay for hiring a booster seat, and petrol (which is much cheaper in the US I'll grant you) and a sat nav hire charge if that were possible. Also - I hate driving anywhere in the world on the right hand side of the road....

I think that and the expense of a potential divorce are two HUGE reasons for not renting a car in your situation!

scooby, you make a very good case, and in your situation I'd probably do the same thing. But I just have to say that I have a midsize car from Alamo for $138 for 5 days. It's a Chevy HHR, kinda their answer to the surfer sedan. It's really loaded, power everything, great radio, leather seats - in short, and incredible car for a rock bottom price. I'm very happy!

Hey - aren't you in the world right now! Hope you're having a good trip - glad you're enjoying the car! If driving in the US held no fear for me you'd probably have persuaded me, but for me, the only thing worse would be driving in France - (suicide)..... ;)

I have read of a taxi price increase, which is somewhere around 25% since it has been several years since the last one. I'm not sure of the effective date, or if it has gone into effect yet.

Basically taxi rates are (or have been before the increase) $2.00 for the first ¼ mile and then 25ù for each additional 1/8 mile. This makes it $3.50 for the first mile, and $2.00 for each additional full mile. Plus tip!

I remember several years ago (when the rates were even lower) we had to get from the Contemporary to our room at Caribbean Beach in a hurry and did not have our car. At that time the taxi fare was $13.50, and I know we were taken by the most direct route.

I've had similar experiences driving in those odd countries who travel on the wrong (left) side of the road! After a bit, I don't have much trouble getting used to it. But I never get used to crossing the street on foot - I can't seem to remember which way to look first!
