Trip Report
Cast: Susan, 28 (that’s me!), Disney Veteran
Jill, 28, best friend from college and another Disney Veteran
Assorted friends from my past
Dates: March 27-30, 2008
Resort: All Star Music, Broadway Inn section
Transportation: I am flying and using Disney’s Magical Express for the first time. Jill is driving up from South Florida and meeting me at the hotel.
Reason for Trip:
To see Paul Revere and the Raiders and enjoy the sight of the lead singer in his tight pants.
Day One: Thursday, March 27th: I get up at 4AM and my darling sister drives me to the airport in Providence, and I catch a 6:30 AM flight to Orlando. I arrive at 9:30 AM, catch the Magical Express and get to All Star Music, check in, and I am done by 10:51AM! My room is ready when I get there, and it is in my favorite section, Broadway! Yay!
I have a late breakfast at the food court, then go hang out in my room until Jill arrives around 1PM. We hang out a little, then we drive over to my former work, which is near Animal Kingdom, and I spend some time saying hi to everyone. Then Jill and I drive back to the resort and catch the bus to Downtown Disney. We walk around the Marketplace, then cut over to West Side and have dinner at Wolfgang Puck Express. Excellent four cheese pizza! Then we run over to Pleasure Island and grab a drink from the outdoor bar. I had the Superstar, quite good! After that, we go to the movies and see Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, which was a very good movie. Then it’s a bus back to the hotel and time for bed. It was after midnight by then, so I was definitely tired after being up so early.
Day Two: Friday. We went to MGM in the morning. I know, I know, it’s not MGM anymore, but I refuse to change my ways and start calling it Hollywood. We met my friend Jenn from my former work, so she could get us in free! Hooray! We rode the Great Movie ride, then split. Jill and I went to the Sci Fi for lunch. We had tried to get a reservation, and they said it was all booked, but we walked up and got right in! We love eating here, not because the food is so great, but because we love all the horribly funny sci fi clips they show. Cat Women from Mars, The Amazing Colossal Man (“I don’t want to grow anymore!”), The Giant Gila Monster, Robot Martians (inexplicably covered in fur), etc. Favorite quote: “I thought I’d be frightened on my wedding night, but nothing like this!”
After lunch, Jill and I went to Muppet Vision, because I love it so. Then we decided that was all we wanted to do, and went back to the hotel for a nap.
We got up and got going around 4ish, and took the bus to Epcot. We headed back to the America Gardens Theater for the Paul Revere and the Raiders concert. I fell in love with the lead singer, Darren Medley, when I saw them last year. Well, not really in love, I don’t really know him. But I do love the way he sings and the way he dances in those tight pants!!!! Soooooo, we stopped for margaritas in Mexico (I had mango, yum), and China for dinner. Lotus Blossom Café has the best orange chicken! Then we got in line for the second show, since the first had already started. We got great seats up front in the aisle, and we both took tons of pictures! The concerts were awesome, Paul Revere is funny. And of course, Darren looked good, kicking away! When the show was over, we hightailed it out of there before Illuminations started. Neither of us care for that show much, and we wanted to beat the crowds to the bus.
Day Three: Saturday. Got up early again and spent the whole day at Epcot. Our main goal was to see all the Flower and Garden Festival stuff, and then hit the concerts again for the Raiders last night. So when we arrived at Epcot, we went straight to Soarin, and got fastpasses. Then, since the line was only 30 minutes, we decided to just go ahead and ride once standby. That ride is soooo relaxing. I call it the aromatherapy ride! When we got off that, we had breakfast at the Sunshine Seasons and then used our fastpasses for more aromatherapy on Soarin! Then we wandered around Future World, taking pics of the Flower and Garden displays. We went inside the Wonders of Life pavilion, which housed a lot of festival stuff. Jill told me I should make a sign for Darren at the Kidcot Fun Stop, so I did: I *heart* Darren! Then we continued around the world.
We hit World Showcase and browsed the various garden displays. We stopped in France for the movie. In Japan, we spent some time in the big store. In America, we saw the Voices of Liberty and the American Adventure show, which always makes both of us cry! Then we wandered over to Germany to look in the toy store. After that, we went back to China for dinner again, then headed back to America to get in line. To our surprise, there was already a long line, even though we were over an hour early! Jill decided to go to UK for some Strongbow and she said she’d stop by Mexico to get me another mango margarita! So I waited in line. They started seating before she got back, and since there were so many people ahead of me, I decided to just wait at the head of the line for the second show. It worked out great, since we got perfect front aisle seats again! And yes, I held up my sign, and Darren actually came over and Jill took our picture! I felt rather silly, but it was fun, too. We enjoyed the rest of the concerts, then rushed out before Illuminations again.
Our song for the weekend was our various versions of Amy Winehouses’ Rehab. We modified the lyrics to suit the occasion. For example, when getting fastpasses for Soarin, we would sing, “They try to make us wait for Soarin, and we say, nooo, no no.” Or, “Make us watch Illuminations and we say nooo no no.” We found many many excuses to sing this song. Well, the funniest thing happened during the last concert, Paul Revere started saying nooo no no, and then he started singing the Rehab song, and Jill and I just cracked up. I mean, Paul Revere is 70 years old, so it was even funnier.
Day Four: Jill and I went to Magic Kingdom in the morning. We did Pirates and got fastpasses for Big Thunder. We rode HM, and had lunch at Pecos Bill’s. Then we used our fastpasses for Big Thunder. Then we wandered over to Fantasyland. While passing Small World, Jill says, “Susan, ask me if I want to ride Small World.” So I do, and she replies, “Try to make me go on Small World, and I say, nooo no no!” Hee hee.
I need to get going at this point because I am going to meet my friend April at the hotel, so Jill and I part ways. She catches the monorail to Epcot and I catch the bus to All Star Music. Now for most of the trip, we have had to stand on the busses since they were packed with spring breakers. So on my ride from MK, it was rather funny that I had the entire bus to myself! I had a nice chat with the driver.
When I got back to the hotel, I met April and her kids and we hung out and talked while the kids played in the arcade. Then I had to go catch Magical Express back to the airport at 3:30. It all went smoothly and the flight home was uneventful.
All in all, it was a fabulous trip! It was nice to be back in FL again, after moving away 2 months ago, and the Paul Revere and the Raiders concerts were awesome. I can’t wait for my next trip!
