View Full Version : Flights to MCO
LaurensMom 03-30-2008, 09:41 PM Ok, seriously. We are trying to go to WDW this year instead of our usual DLR trip with our 3 yr. It is actually a better deal at WDW (price wise), however, the flights to MCO or out of control. For a 6 night trip at a WDWR hotel with meals, etc.. under $1800, add the flight, for 3 of us (2 adults, 1 3 yr old) and we are now hitting $3200... That is nearly double.. Does anyone have any suggestions? We are looking at Nov 22-Nov 28 (thanksiving time) Granted we are coming from San Jose, CA, but come on, $1500 for 3 tickets???? We have tried the vacation packages, expedia, travelocity, yahoo.. no luck... Does anyone know any secrets?
GusMan 03-30-2008, 10:08 PM I understand your sticker shock. However, $500 per ticket is not all that bad for a cross country flight these days, to be honest. Yes, I know there are some cheap fares out there, but they are harder to find every day.
When is your trip? Sometimes time of year makes a difference as well.
Personally, I use a site like expedia or travelocity to do my searching for me then once I see some ballpark figures, then I go to the airlines directly to see specifics on a particular set of flights.
Search out all the airports within a 1 to 2 hr drive from your home. Sometimes you can save big bucks by going a little out of your way. We are doing this for our trip coming up and hopefully it will be worth the drive to save $100 per ticket for the 6 of us. In your case, as an example, can you fly out of SanFran or Oakland instead of SJ? Are your flights non-stop?
Additionally, the time of day that you fly can make a big difference. Flying on off-peak flights can mean savings but they may not be the best flights for you. It is something to consider and weigh. Maybe a red-eye option?
To be very honest, while I know that it is tempting to wait for last minute fares, once you finally see something in your budget, go for it and dont look back. With fuel prices causing fluctuation in the airline market, there is no telling what would happen.
Hope that helps for starters...
Leslie 03-31-2008, 04:52 AM I bought our 2 plane tickets in Ferbuary for our june's vacation to WDW. Today the exact flight is now 200.00 more a ticket. So I believe earlier is better. Good luck
Cheshire Figment 03-31-2008, 07:59 AM Sorry but your choice of dates is not good for flying. The days around Thanksgiving are the most heavily booked air travel dayes of the year. Move your trip one week earlier or one week later and you will see the fares drop.
UsBurchs 03-31-2008, 09:37 AM Yep, that time of year is pricey! We are headed to MCO on Thanksgiving from Seattle. The best I could find after looking and looking was $498, and that was a direct flight on Alaska including tax. Luckily for us, my mother-in-law has been hording airline mile points forever and we got all five tickets paid for . . . a miracle, really. We wouldn't be going otherwise. The sticker shock can send any vacation down the drain. I'm sure if you didn't mind taking a red-eye or stopping here and there along the way, the tickets might be cheaper, but when traveling with little ones the extra money for a shorter flight is worth it! (My 3 year old DS has bad pressure problems with his ears and too many ups and downs makes for a miserable trip. Thank God for Earplanes!)
Also remember that you usually won't get a good deal on flights from any travel agency these days. They might be able to help you find them, but since there are no commissions for flights, it's very hard to get good deals. They even charge a fee for booking flights, in most cases. My best advice is to use a search engine such as Travelocity or Expedia, but actually buy the airline flights from the airline directly online - you usually save just a little and the fare rules are listed clearly and any changes are easier to make.
IslandDisneyGirl 04-01-2008, 06:49 PM Wow, That is high. I'm flying Kona,Hawaii to Orlando then out of NewBern, NorthCarolina for about $650 or so in May. I checked with my travel agent friend and she said Continental has prices from San Jose for about $335 RT per person includes taxes it goes via Houston on those days, also if you can it's cheaper to fly Mon-Thurs.
About your package. Is that from expedia too? I got my WDW package with hotel/tickets/dining from Walt Disney Travel Company and I'm paying about $1300 for 10days at the Pop Century with parkhopper and water park and more and dining.
It is true that travel agents sometimes charge a fee but travel agents also know how to find the cheap fares and my friend books through wholesalers so they get a discount which is passed on to me. Ask around locally for travel agent references, if they are good they will tell you the price is $400 plus our fee of $30 or whatever so you can book it on line to save the service fee. Then you can book the Disney package through them and since they get commission on that they usually don't charge you a fee. At least that's how it works here.
Good Luck-
